Young Catholics: Future Evangelists of the Faith FOUNDATION, INC. 2010 Annual Report Mission Statement Carl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the finances given by God to use on His behalf” inspired the commitment he and his wife, Paula, made to founding the Koch Foundation in 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support for a wide variety of evangelization efforts. In considering applications, major emphasis is placed on sound but financially needy evangelical programs. The Koch Foundation is international in scope with no geographical preference. Letter from the Executive Director The increase in the number of young Catholics brings the Church fresh energy and new ways of spreading the Catholic faith. As young Catholics care for their families, fulfill their employment responsibilities, and interact through numerous social networks, they develop new opportunities to evangelize. Whether using social media, holding discus- sion groups, serving in soup kitchens, becoming youth ministers, or evangelizing in vari- ous missions, these young Catholics have developed methods of spreading the faith that are extremely effective in today’s technological world. Parishes in dioceses worldwide have witnessed an increase in the participation of young adults in the Catholic faith. Young Catholics are learning more about Christ’s love and strengthening their commitment to their faith through their participation in an increasing number of ministries. Their spiritual hunger and their thirst for knowledge provide the Church opportunities to satisfy these needs by making these young adults integral parts of the universal Church and of the individual parishes. Other welcome challenges for the Church are the young adults who once called them- selves Catholic but now do not participate in their faith. New ways of conducting out- reach activities should be designed. By targeting their non-active peers and working to bring them back to the Church, active young Catholics are playing an essential role in spreading the Good News and expanding the Word. To assist their return to the Church, non-active young Catholics are being invited to share in ministry experiences. When John Paul II initiated the annual celebration of World Youth Day, he recognized the promise and the future of the Church were its youth. At the Inauguration ceremonies to World Youth Day in 1978, he said, “You are the future of the world, you are the hope of the Church, you are my hope.” Young Catholics are our hope as we guide them to follow the footsteps of Christ. Keeping them in touch with the Church as they strive to achieve their immediate and distant dreams ensures their spiritual development. They are not only the future of the Church, they are the promise of a profound commitment to the faith. Whether it is a ministry for those incarcerated in Ameri- can prisons, the sacramental preparation of children in India studying for their First Communion, or classes to ready couples for marriage in Poland, these emergent Church leaders can be found joyfully sharing their beliefs.     Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year of 2008 which marks the 150th anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Carmelite friar Fr. Tony Lester, O.Carm. preaching at the Grotto in Lourdes. But before I can tell you why I think there’s a strong link between the message of Lourdes and Carmelite spirituality, there’s something I feel I have to say first: I am not a big fan of apparitions generally. There, I feel better for writing that! Let me explain… When I was a teenager (all of a decade ago), I used to be very attracted by the extraordinary (even spooky) parts of our Catholic faith. Visions, weeping statues, saints who could reveal your past and your future, stigmata, Eucharistic miracles and so on – I was fascinated by it all. And when I first came to Lourdes aged thirteen I discovered all sorts of out-of-the-ordinary things to excite me: a vision story, miraculous healings, ‘holy’ water, and enough glow-in-the-dark crucifixes and tacky religious art to fill the town’s three basilicas and numerous chapels. There’s nothing wrong with piety, of course, but it needs to be balanced and sensible.

He attended All Hallows College, Dublin, Ireland from 1950 to 1956 and was ordained a Catholic priest in All Hallows Seminary chapel on June 17, 1956 for the Diocese of Dunkeld. He received a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Gregorian University in Rome and is a member of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He was appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter, Diocese of Dunkeld, in 1992 and named Chaplain to the Holy Father in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. He presently serves as parish priest in the Church of the Holy Family, Dunblane, and the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Auchterarder, Scotland. Relying on the work of Father Kevin Condon, C.M. in his book, The Missionary College of All Hallows, 1842-1891, published by All Hallows College, 1986, Monsignor O’Sullivan has written this essay on the history of All Hallows College, Dublin. The college campus will be handed over the University of Dublin on November 1, 2016.     JUNE 3, 2012 – TRINITY SUNDAY THE MARTYRS OF UGANDA Each year on June 3, the Episcopal Church commemorates the Martyrs of Uganda, the 32 men who were killed between 1885 and 1887 for failing to renounce Christianity – 12 of whom were burned to death on June 3, 1886. The Rev. Canon Petero Sabune, the Episcopal Church’s officer for Africa, explains: “In 1884 Mwanga the son of Mutesa, ascended to the throne of his father and demanded total obedience from his subjects. When Mwanga, who, like his father, had embraced Christianity, converted to Islam, he issued a decree stipulating that anyone caught reading the Bible would be executed. “A group of Catholics and Anglicans at the royal court of Buganda had started reading the Bible in preparation The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine, in Namugongo, Uganda, built in 1973 for baptism before the decree went out. To assist children in developing the understanding that all of God's people are called to a life of holiness 2. To help children respond appropriately to the question: What is a saint? One who: • lives like Jesus teaches others about Jesus by their example • teaches others about Jesus by their example • is proclaimed by the Church, after their death, to have lived a life of holiness 3. John Hand (1807-1846) attended St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and was ordained a priest in 1835. He had a strong interest in the Association for the Propaganda of the Faith, which was founded in 1838, and he conceived the idea of a college in which priests would be trained to serve the Irish peoples in English-speaking countries other than Ireland. In February 1842 the Holy See gave its blessing to the project and All Hallows College was formally opened in November 1842. It was housed in a mansion in Drumcoda in Dublin. The early presidents of the College were: Rev. John Hand 1842-1846 Dr David Moriarty 1846-1854 Dr Bartholomew Woodlock 1854-1861 Rev. Thomas Bennett 1861-1866 Dr William Fortune 1866-1892 The College grew rapidly. The number of students rose from one in 1842 to 120 in 1846. By 1860 there were over 200 students. In its first 40 years, the College sent over 1000 missionaries to English-speaking countries. The main destinations were the United States of America (420), Australia and New Zealand (250), Britain (190), Canada (60), the West Indies and Argentine (49), India (30) and South Africa (28). Since 1892 All Hallows College has been under the direction of the Vincentians.
