OLD CAMP MEETING DAYS Vol. 7 VEP ELLIS , T HE THREE MACS AND THE LEE COLLEGE CHORUS

In the year 1799 two minister brothers, John and William M’Gee, set forth on a journey through what was then called “The Barrens.“ In the course of their trip they stopped at a ceremonial service whereby John M’Gee was invited to offer a sermon. So unusually moving and powerful was this message that those attending, spontaneously burst forth with tears, and intermittently clapped and raised their hands toward heaven as if a great physical and mental release from their burdening sins had, at last, been theirs. With this description of this new medium of worship we’re reminded of two biblical passages which read as follows: “I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting“ (I Thimothy 2:8), and “O clap your hands all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph“ (Psalm 47:1). Triumph it was. People were excited, and the word quickly spread through the sparsely settled country. Meetings followed with great fervor, as well as the need for new music to blend harmoniously with this new order of worship. AMB 90282 4

OLD CAMP MEETING DAYS Vol. 7 VEP ELLIS , T HE THREE MACS AND THE LEE COLLEGE CHORUS

SESAC takes great pleasure in presenting some of this new music, written by today’s eminent composers in the field. At the same time we delight in remi - niscing of the spirit of the ‘Old Camp Meeting Days’ – recaptured for us with the fine baritone voice of Vep Ellis. Well known through his many recordings, and radio and television performances, Vep Ellis is also a noted composer and lyricist as demonstrated by three of his songs on this disc.
