Physician's Directory
National Kidney and Transplant Institute East Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines, 1104
FOREWORD
The National Kidney and Transplant Institute, from its humble beginnings as a foundation dedicated to treating kidney, genitourinary tract diseases and organ transplantation, has evolved into what is presently considered the most formidable team in their specialties in the Philippine healthcare arena. Now in its 30th year, the Institute is very proud to present the new Physicians Directory highlighting our homegrown experts and internationally-trained and acclaimed specialists. One essential factor for an organization to achieve successful healthcare implementation is through harnessing its human resources. The practice of medicine in the Institute has blossomed over time through reinforcing the expertise, capabilities and support facilities of the doctors. In light of the increasing demands of patient care, the NKTI management established a Medical Arts building for doctors in order to provide a “niche” where they can directly interact with patients, as well as to support professional growth through private practice. Over the years, the number of doctors multiplied as patient referrals increased. As a renowned training institute, NKTI has been able to realize its mandates through the sharing of expertise and transfer of knowledge by implementing effective, relevant and up-to-date training protocols that supplement service continuity – ensuring that the NKTI way of patient care and management is inherited by the present and future generations of doctors. The success of the NKTI is congruent to the success of its personnel. We are a team, a family. Despite being a specialty hospital, we are very proud that camaraderie and teamwork has long been realized in the Institution – a measurement indicator that we have sustained the holistic way of delivering healthcare through a dynamic mix of specialists and generalists, young and old, coming from the best medical schools in the country and who have been further educated in leading specialty centers around the world. I thank everyone for the success of NKTI. Let us all infuse the culture of cooperation and capacity-building towards being a more competitive and innovative institution. Special recognition goes out to our staff from the Public Information Office, Executive Offices and the Department Offices. Thank you very much for putting this directory together.
JOSE DANTE P. DATOR, M.D. Executive Director

Department of Anesthesia
Department of Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology was established in 1983 with Aurea Z. Ambrosio, MD, DPBA, as Chairman. They started providing anesthesia care for patients undergoing Organ Transplant Surgery and Critical Care cases. ANESTHESIA
The original National Kidney Foundation which there was dedicated to renal surgical procedures and has expanded to include all services except cardiac surgery and OB and renamed as National Kidney and Transplant Institute.
HIGHLIGHTS OF ACHIEVEMENTS:
1983 – Revived the living related kidney transplant in a government institution. 1986 – First Kidney Transplant from a cadaveric donor in the Philippines. 1988 – First simultaneous Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Surgery, the first double organ transplant in Asia. Each year, we do cases of Renal Transplant Surgery at an average of 200-400 patients/year. Since 1988, we also started doing Liver Transplant Surgery. 1996 –First Pediatric Living-Related Liver Transplant Surgery was done in the Philippines. Provides clinical anesthetic care for all types of surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as: · Transplant Surgery · General Surgery · Urology · Ambulatory Surgery/Procedures · Orthopedics · Ophthalmology · Pediatric Surgery · Endoscopy · Neurosurgery · Interventional Radiology · Gynecology and Women's Health · Vascular Surgery · Minimally invasive surgeries e.g. lapcholecystectomy, lap-urological procedures including lap-donor nephrectomies and percutaneous kidney stone removal.
Beyond the operating room theater, we render anesthesia care to ambulatory cases such as Peripheral and Coronary Angioplasty, ESWL, Diagnostic CT scan, MRI, and Nuclear. We give anesthesia service to state of the art procedures like endovascular aortic repair for aortic aneurysm.
All procedures and cases were made possible with the acquisition of the latest state of the art anesthesia equipments. All anesthetic procedures are thoroughly monitored using state of the art monitoring like oxymetry, capnography, BISpectral monitor (measure of depth of anesthesia), and TOF watch for neuromuscular block.
The anesthesia department employs newer technique like target controlled infusion for total intravenous anesthesia, regional blocks using ultrasound.

Department of Internal Medicine
Department of Internal Medicine
History The Department of Internal Medicine of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute is an accredited training institution for internal medicine by the Philippine Specialty Board of Internal Medicine of the Philippine College of Physicians. It was organized in 1987 by Director Filoteo Alano with the late Dr. Benigno Agbayani as the department's first chair. From a handful of active consultant staff and an initial two (2) residents in 1987, the department now (2013) has more than 40 active consultant staff, has trained 95residents in Internal Medicine as of 2012, and has an in-training staff of 23 residents. Most of the graduates have pursued subspecialty training in various fields of Internal Medicine and others have sought further foreign training in the United States, Australia, and Singapore. INTERNAL MEDICINE Other than internal medicine training, the department also has subspecialty training in oncology, organized in 2005 by Dr. Gloria Cristal - Luna.
Mission and Vision The department's Mission and Vision fully supports the Mission and Vision of the institute in its quest of becoming a lead tertiary hospital in renal disease and transplantation, through an excellent program in internal medicine training, research, and patient care.
To achieve its mission, the department has regularly held workshops to assess its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It has continued to “cross the river by feeling the stones” (ancient proverb by Deng Xiaoping). It means implementing reforms in a manner where the department advances step-by-step by summing up the situation from their experience, both positive and negative, to reach its goal of excellence.
Consultant staff The department is proud to have within its active consultant staffs, an elite core of physicians representing the different subspecialties of internal medicine. The executive committee, composed of the training officer, the head of research and organizational and staff development committee, the head of service committee, head of admissions, and the immediate past chairman, manages the programs of the department. The different sections of internal medicine, which include cardiology, pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, nephrology, hematology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, rheumatology and allergy/immunology, psychiatry, and clinical nutrition, provide a comprehensive care for each patient.
Commitment to service The department's commitment to service is continually being reevaluated and improved. It attends to 37% of hospital admissions and 22% of the charity out-patient services. It also handles the emergency room as ER officer, the intensive care unit, intermediate medical care unit and charity medicine admissions numbering 313 last year within a budget of 10-15% of the institutional budget allocation. The continuous expansion of the institution, the opening of the much bigger emergency room, and the decreasing subsidy from the government will definitely be a challenge for the department. But this will be a challenge that the department will face with enthusiasm and vigor in order to achieve excellence in the delivery of healthcare.
9 Research development Development of quality researches has also been a thrust of the department for the past years. Despite some hindrances to research, the department was able to produce several quality researches through the effective mentoring and guidance of the residents in the research development process. Most of the research papers won in the annual institution- wide research forum and most were presented in national meetings as poster or oral presentation with a number making it for international presentations and for publication in national and international peer reviewed journals.
Other achievements For several years, the department has been awarded as the Best Department in the Emergency Room. The residents are also proud to gain other recognitions as: Best NKTI employee, Best ER Officer, and won inter-hospital contests, including the much-desired Annual PCP-Pfizer Quiz contest (1995 and 2009 Grand Champion). The graduates of the department have a consistent 100% passing rate for the certifying board examination of the Philippine Specialty Board of Internal Medicine (2005-2013).
Organizational development In its quest to achieve its mission of quality patient care through the pursuit of excellence in training, research and healthcare, the department has embarked on a process of change that includes a patient safety program and the development of leadership competencies in its residency training. These include leadership qualities of integrity, compassion, good communication skills, professionalism, discipline, and work excellence among many others. Personal coaching and mentoring have provided the needed support to the residents who have been adjusting to the challenges of residency training. A total performance management cycle evaluating consultants and residents was also started.
The department will press on to live within the healer's mission, to have the heart and mind of a compassionate physician, to always be open to change, to be in an attitude of learning, to behave as competently as the rest of the world, and to pursue excellence for an excellent service to our people and for God's greater glory.

68 Department of Urology
Department of Urology
On January 16, 1981, Section 1 of Presidential Decree 1832 formally created the National Kidney Foundation of the Philippines (NKFP). On February 23, 1983, Ms. Imelda Marcos, assisted by members of the Board of Trustees, laid down the cornerstone of the NKFP at its present site. Along with the establishment of NKFP came the humble beginnings of the Section of Urology, then under the Department of Surgery. Under the wings of the three pillars in Urology, Drs. Benjamin Magsino, Abelardo Prodigalidad and OGY Genaro Yusi, it immediately created an impact in the local urologic community by establishing at the time of its inception a residency training program. Soon after, the UROL patients came and the Urology service was born, with an exponential growth in consultations and surgical procedures performed over the next two decades. Throughout the years, this section came into its own, being elevated to full department status, and at present is one of the biggest contributors to the hospital revenue.
To date, the Department has spawned 54 graduates, and the number of consultant staff has risen to 24 active consultants and 11 visiting consultants. It continues to enrich the local urologic community by holding regular symposiums and workshops. Plans to establish a center for men’s health are also in the works. Indeed, the future is bright for the NKTI Department of Urology
