Symptom

You want to render SAP Web applications in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) or Edge.

Other Terms

User interface, browser, front end, IE, Edge, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 Internet, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows, SAP NetWeaver, portal, UI, Web, Web application, Web Dynpro

Reason and Prerequisites

SAP always assumes that you have applied the latest patches for a given NetWeaver SPS. SAP always assumes you have installed the latest updates of Internet Explorer and Edge. For a list of the known bugs (not complete) and corrections see this and related notes.

This is the central note for SAP Support of Internet Explorer and Edge.

Solution

SAP Release Policy for Internet Explorer

SAP Supports the Microsoft IE release cycle and conditionally supports the IE version from the vendor release date on.

SAP supports IE for desktop operating systems until end of support by Microsoft.

Internet Explorer for Windows Phone 8.1 is conditionally by SAP for SAPUI5. SAP planes to supersede IE with Edge on Windows Phone 10. Mobile browser versions are supported for 3 years from vendor release date on.

Exceptions from this rule, such as not supported versions, later supported versions or earlier end of life will be published separately.

SAP processes errors (e.g. caused by incompatible changes of new IE release) as quickly as possible. However, if an ad-hoc solution is required for operational reasons, you must use an alternative browser which is unconditionally released.

Support date, minimum required backend Support Package (SP) and the limitations will be published in Product Availability Matrix (PAM) on Service Market Place after vendor release date (see http://service.sap.com/PAM). The content and the extent of the limitations and the backend changes depend on the vendor changes in the new browser version.

Note that the information about the browser support for SAP solutions such as ERP, CRM, SRM, SCM might deviate from NetWeaver suport information and is also available in the corresponding PAM.

Microsoft Release Policy for Internet Explorer

From January 12, 2016 only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for the supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates (see IE blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/08/07/stay-up-to-date-with-internet-explorer.aspx). For Windows 7, 8.1 operating systems and server 2012 R2 this will be IE11.

SAP will also end supporting browser vesions lower than IE11 for these operating systems on January 12, 2016.

Please stay up-to-date with release announcements for Internet Explorer following IEBlog on MSDN (external link: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/).

SAP recommendations for Internet Explorer Versions

SAP Strongly recommends to use Internet Explorer 11 from Jan 2016 on latest.

Internet Explorer 6 (end of life) Microsoft dropped support for IE6 and Windows XP in April 2014 (see also http://www.ie6countdown.com/educate-others.aspx )

Internet Explorer 7 IE7 misses security features like cross-document messaging and cross-origin resource sharing and does not support modern features. SAP does not recommend to use IE7 and dropped its support in newer releases like NW 7.40. End of support date is Jan 12, 2016.

Internet Explorer 8 IE8 partially supports modern html5 features and cannot consume new SAP html5 based applications, such as SAP Fiori (For full SAPUI5 support SAP recommends to use IE11). End of support: Jan 12, 2016.

Internet Explorer 9 IE9 introduced a new IE9 engine and a new IFrame handling. For details see IE9 release notes ("Quirks and Standards Mode"). IE9 is not available on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. IE9 does not support all html5 features used by SAPUI5 (For full SAPUI5 support SAP recommends to use IE11). End of support: Jan 12, 2016, except for Windows Vista.

Internet Explorer 10 IE10 offers several improvements in html5 and is the recommended for new SAPUI5 based applications like SAP Fiori. SAP supports IE10 Desktop 32-bit. IE10 Windows Modern UI 32- and 64-bit are not supported in general. In IE10 Microsoft changed the default document mode to standards mode. This can brake old pages, which are not using a valid "doctype" definition. To run IE10 with SAP you need the recommended minimum SPS and the latest patches. End of support: Jan 12, 2016, except for Windows Server 2012 R1 (not recommended by SAP).

Internet Explorer 11 SAP supports IE11 Desktop. To run IE11 you need the recommended minimum SPS and the latest patches.

Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1 IE11 in "Modern UI" (including touch support) is not supported in general. "Windows 8 Modern UI" and touch are only supported for SAPUI5.

IE11 Enterprise Mode EMIE IE11 introduced a new Enterprise Mode, which can be used to run web applications which do not fulfill the requirements for IE11. For details please refer to the IE11 relase note.

Internet Explorer 11 on Windows Phone 8.1 IE11 for WP 8.1 is conditionally released with SAPUI5 1.28 (shipped with UI add-on 1.0 SP11) and higher. Limitations: IE11 on WP8.1 does not support drag&drop (and/or moving objects). Reference device is Nokia Lumia 930 in country version "Germany" with the latest operating system version. For an overview of the device operatings system versions please see http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/support/software- update/wp8-software-update/ . Support cases must be reproducible on this device. End of conditional support of IE11 on WP8.1 is planned with availability of Edge on Windows 10 mobile. It is strongly recommended to use Windows 10 mobile for productive usage.

Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 Desktop SAP supports IE11 Desktop on Windows 10. Exceptions: SAP plans to support IE11 on Windows 10 for Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports and the BOE suite in BI4.1 SP7 and in BI4.2 . Touch usage is only planned to be supported by SAPUI5.

Remarks: Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 will remain fundamentally unchanged from Windows 8.1 (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2015/03/24/updates-from-the-project-spartan-developer-workshop.aspx).

In general, IE11 on Windows 10 will be supported for the same products, which IE11 on Windows 8.1 is supported for today. Exceptions will be published in the corresponding product PAM. SAP does not plan any specific support policy for IE11 on Windows 10 comparing to other IE11 versions. For IE11 on Windows 10 a new required minimum SPS will be necessary.

Edge Browser Support on Windows 10 Desktop

Windows 10 includes a new browser called "Edge" using a different Layout Engine than IE. Edge does not support ActiveX (except flash). All SAP UI Technologies with active plug-in components will not be supported anymore.

SAP supports Edge with the following UI technologies:

l SAP UI5 starting with version 1.32 (release date planned on November, 23rd 2015). Downport to 1.28 is planned l Enterprise Portal with Fiori Framework Page from NW 7.31 SP14 and higher (see Note 2176901)

Future direction for SAP support is as follows (this is current state of planning and may be changed by SAP at any time):

¡ Enterprise Portal with Ajax Framework Page in standards mode plans to support Edge with NW 7.31 SP14 and higher (see Note 2176901) ¡ SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio plans to support Edge as soon as possible (depending on SAPUI5 support and its internal availability) ¡ Lumira plans to support Edge with Lumira 1.29 (planned for November 2015) ¡ BI 4 and Web Intelligence plans to support Edge in release 4.2 SP2 (mid 2016) ¡ Web Dynpro ABAP und UR Standards Mode plan to support Edge with restrictions as future direction ¡ WEBUIF plans Edge support as future direction. ¡ SAP plans to support Edge on Windows 10, for Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports and the BOE suite in a BI4.2 Service Pack (probably in H2 2016). Edge Support is not planned for: BSP SAP GUI and SAP GUI for HTML All SAP UI Technologies with active plug-in components

Edge Browser Support on Windows 10 Mobile

Planned as future direction.

64-bit layout engine of Internet Explorer

Note: the main process in IE10 and higher versions runs in a 64-bit process on 64-bit OS. The visible windows ("tab") by default uses a 32-bit layout engine. The Enhanced Protected Mode "EPM" (Windows 7) or the 64-bit modus of Enhanced Protected Mode (Windows 8.1), which switch to 64- bit rendering are not supported in general. In other words, if EPM is set to "off", all visible IE windows run in general supported 32-bit process.

IE 64-bit rendering is supported by:

l SAPUI5 l WEBUIF l Portal Ajax Framework Page in standards mode.

For other UI technologies bug report can be filed only for 32 bit rendering. So far we are not aware of technical rendering differences between the 32-bit and 64-bit IE layout engines. SAP browser add-on based UI technologies (Active Components) technically do not support 64-bit version of IE.

Please Note: This does not mean that IE with 32-bit rendering is not supported on Windows Operating System 64 bit (on the contrary, it is recommended).

Internet Explorer general restrictions

IFrame restrcition (Quirks and Standard mode) In an Iframe, IE can only render the compatible document modes of the top-level page engine. This includes IE9 engine document modes (IE9- 11) and IE8 engine document modes (IE5-IE8). In SAP this is sometimes colloquially called "standards mode" and "quirks mode", which is technically not accurate, but describes the SAP use case. For details, further information and configuration recommendations please refer to note 1900896 .

Remarks: Internet Explorer Compatibility View inSAP context

Documentation about compatibility view: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-9 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11

A flowchart describing how the decision to use compatibility view is made in IE9 please can be found here: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/ieblog/2010/Jun/16_IEsCompatibilityFeaturesforSiteDevelopers_1.svg

An application page can determine its rendering mode via the MS specific Meta tag "X-UA-Compatible" (e.g. quirks or standards). In that case the compatability view setting do not have any influence on the rendering. If there is no such tag, the compatibility view setting sets IE to "EmulateIE7" mode. This can be helpful for rendering of quirks mode application in the correct quirks document mode using IE10 and higher releases.
