The Wave of the Future Recent graduates give generously to invest in the Carlson School’s future.

y giving back as soon as they graduate, alumni are Bable to see their gifts at work. “Recent graduates have the most to be grateful for,” points out Ryan Norine, ’02 BSB. It was about a year ago that Ryan and fellow alum Nick Richardson,’01 BS, were talking about their time at the Carlson School. When Nick asked Ryan if he’d kept in touch with the school lately, Ryan had to laugh. Having spent the last few years in the London office of American Express, he hadn’t been able to volunteer. Still, Ryan was conscious of how much the school had given him. As a recent graduate, he felt that he owed his career to the education and opportunities of the Carlson School. Together, the pair developed a plan to endow an undergraduate scholarship—not just from them, but from the classes that had been at the Carlson School when they were undergraduates. They began the Bachelor of Science in Business, Class of 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 Scholarship. Ryan is proud of the drive’s success so far, and hopes to have the scholarship fully endowed by 2007. Corporate Support Brings Extraordinary Women’s Forum to Carlson School “Strategies for Success” leads the way for more offerings.

On Nov. 7, 2003, the Carlson School hosted more than 200 students, professionals, and alumni for an incredible day of executive keynotes, panel sessions, and roundtables. Another 80,000 viewed portions of the programming through Twin Cities Public Television. The phenomenal response to “Strategies for Success” led to new leadership offerings, most notably Inside the Boardroom with Marilyn Carlson Nelson, a recurring conversation and networking event featuring leading women CEOs. “Strategies for Success” would never have happened without the support of alumni and community advocates. In response to requests from school leadership and Graduate Women in Business, C200 members Barbara Mowry, ’75 MBA, Jo Marie Dancik, and Marilyn Carlson Nelson recruited top women executives from firms such as AT&T, Goldman Sachs, and J.P. Morgan to speak at the conference. With a projected budget of more than $50,000 and only a few months to raise the funds, the Carlson School turned to some of its closest corporate partners. he cost for an individual to make it through the “Tundergraduate school these days alarms me,” says Steve Johnston. “And maybe, in my own way, I can help some people ease the burden a little. It seemed like the right thing to do.” Steve, who in 1972 earned a bachelor of agricultural business administration, a joint degree from the Carlson School and the U of M’s College of Agriculture, is a long- term annual benefactor of both. In the spring of 2004 he endowed undergraduate scholarships at each college. Steve took advantage of the President’s Matching Fund offered by the University. “I’d been a giver every year to the school, and I wanted my money to go where it was most needed. The schools offered me the opportunity to turn the gifts into something with a little more meaning than just writing a check. I decided that this would be a nice way to do it.” Bill Walter Bill Walter, ’72 MBA, calls the University’s matching funds program “spectacular,” and says that he hopes his By funding a new scholarship, Bill and his wife, Judy, actions will lead to a new generation of philanthropy. Making Good For one longtime annual donor, giving is a way of life.

Dick Taylor, BSB ’48, stands out as an annual benefactor to the Carlson School—he’s been annually investing for more than two decades. Of his commitment to philanthropy, he says, “it’s a part of a person’s value system. If you really felt that {your education} was worthwhile and you’d like other people in the future to be able to enjoy those things, you ought to do all you can to support it. It’s just that simple.”

Goldberg We thank each of you for sharing our conviction and for bringing us this far. Revenues and Expenditures The need for private support—particularly for scholarships—is evident in the Carlson School revenues and expenditures for the 2003-2004 fiscal year (July to June). The amount of state support continues to decline, and students are feeling the impact through rising tuition. Over the last five Lawrence M. Benveniste years, net state support for the college has declined from $9 million to $1.2 million (19 to two percent) of Dean the school's operating budget. At the same time, U.S. Bancorp Professor of Financial Markets and Institutions tuition has risen more than 64 percent. 243723_cover 10/18/04 12:03 PM Page 1
