2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

National Capital Tennis Association

Philip Johnson, NCTA President

Welcome all to the NCTA 2019 Yearbook. This has been a busy year and I hope you enjoy reading about what the NCTA has been doing. It’s also a very exciting time in Canadian tennis with record breaking performances from our young players on the world stage – especially our ladies where, at the time of writing, Canada claims the #5 woman in the world in singles and our own Gabriella Dabrowski at #9 in doubles. Let’s hope that their success stimulates a resurgence in interest in tennis and brings new young members to our clubs. The competitive game in Ottawa was strong this year including our City Championships and other tournaments, our inter-club leagues and our Bloomex Cup tournament (formerly Roman Cup) which is the largest junior tournament of its kind in the country. The NCTA is proud to have been able to provide financial support to 9 deserving juniors who qualified for national championships through our Junior Development Fund. This year saw the relaunch of the Capital Kids program with year one of our new Trillium grant being activated to support this flagship program. We achieved impressive participation and are well on our way to making this a self-sustaining program when the grant expires. This was supported by a very active school program where we were able to visit some 32 schools and reach 7800 kids giving then a tennis experience that we hope will encourage them to make our sport part of their future. We are also pleased to have assisted in organizing the Ottawa High School Championships, when the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association (NCSSAA) needed to find a convenor on a short notice when there was a real danger that it would not be able to happen. A key priority for most of our member clubs is the condition of their tennis courts and other infrastructure. The City of Ottawa is responsible for re-building the courts at municipal clubs when the sub-surface deteriorates to the point where filling cracks is no longer viable. However, the City has many other demands on its limited funds and is not able to meet the expectations that Clubs have based on the current agreement with the City. The NCTA is currently working with the City Administration, the Ottawa Sports Commissioner (Counsellor Fleury) and the Ottawa Sports Council to find a realistic solution. Our non- municipal clubs are also facing challenges of their own. For example, both OTLBC and ONEC have clubhouses that require major investments. Finally, I am proud to share with you all that Mark Armstrong, a long-time contributing member of our tennis community, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Ontario Tennis Association. This is the highest honor that can be awarded to an individual. I encourage you to read the article on Mark’s support for tennis and join us all in thanking him for his work and congratulating him on this excellent achievement. 3 NCTA VISION

The NCTA is first and foremost an association of tennis clubs so our primary objective is to create a vibrant and growing portfolio of tennis clubs. We aim to partner with the OTA and the City of Ottawa to create pathways that will encourage people to join tennis clubs. This includes engaging youth (and their parents), introducing them to tennis and then guiding them towards their nearest tennis club to sustain their interest. The key challenge facing tennis clubs in Ottawa is sustainability. This includes both membership and facilities. Club membership is – at best – stable even though the population is growing and Canada is having tremendous success on the world stage. Clubs need to enhance their value proposition so that people choose to join a club rather than simply playing on a public court (perhaps as part of an on-line group). Quality facilities should be part of the proposition but for many of our clubs, that is becoming less of a reality. The NCTA aims to help clubs improve their value proposition through professional support, operating programs that benefit all member clubs and engaging stakeholders such as the City of Ottawa in a dialogue to promote the long-term sustainability of clubs. We need to develop a new and compelling value proposition for people to join a tennis club, create more demand amongst younger generations, and make tennis clubs more accessible. With this in mind, vision for 2020 includes: • Maintain all current clubs and create at least 3 new clubs of which one will be a year-round facility; • All tennis clubs in Ottawa are NCTA members through membership of the Ontario Tennis Association (and clubs in Quebec who wish to participate in NCTA programs are who are members of Tennis Quebec) and are equal partners & beneficiaries of the tennis community; • Both the Capital Kids and the Little Aces programs are maintained beyond their current three-year basis with a sustainable funding basis; • The NCTA is seen as the voice of tennis clubs in the region (for example, in any dealings on behalf of the community with the City of Ottawa and the NCC); and, • The City Championships are recognized as the largest and most prestigious tournament in the region.

4 Introduction: Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region

5 History of Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region

The game of lawn tennis was still in its infancy when it was first played on the grounds of Rideau Hall in the late 1870s. With the formation of the Ottawa Lawn Club in 1881 (now known as the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club), a base was laid for the development of organized tennis in the capital. The Canadian Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1890 and in 1894 the Canadian Championships were held at the Ottawa Club, which at that time was located on Cartier Square. Ottawa players competed in a -based league from 1898 to 1902, and from 1903 to 1909 there was an inter-club league in the capital. City Championships were inaugurated in 1910. The game was played on grass until 1913, when the newly formed Rideau Lawn Tennis Club installed a number of clay Ottawa Lawn Tennis Club Members, 1894 courts. (photo credit: Public Archives of Canada) After the First World War, there was a great increase in the number of clubs and it was then that the present overall organization had its beginning. The Ottawa District Lawn Tennis Association (ODLTA) was established in the summer of 1920. By the mid-1920s, it had some 40 member clubs. In 1910, the Sir Percy Lake Trophy, emblematic of the men’s singles City Championship and the Dr. F. C. Hanna and Birks Trophies for the Men’s Doubles Championship were first awarded. In 1925, the first Wom- en’s Singles Championship was contested for the P. D. Ross Trophy and the first Mixed Doubles Champi- onship was held for the John Murphy Trophy. The following year, 1926, the Hon. Charles Murphy Trophy, emblematic of the City Women’s Doubles Championship was awarded, completing all the City Champion- ship events for which competitions are still held. Shortly after its formation, the ODLTA became affiliated with the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association and the Ontario Lawn Tennis Association until early in 1958, except for a brief period during the 1940s when it was affiliated with the Quebec association. In 1958 the ODLTA was granted “provincial” status by the national organization. Its name was changed to the National Capital Lawn Tennis Association in 1960 and the word “lawn” was dropped in 1979. The NCTA ceased to have “provincial” status in the fall of 1988. In 1991, it became an autonomous region of the Ontario Tennis Association. The ODLTA set up an inter-club league in 1922. It had three main sections designated A, B and C, until 1966, when the present four-division arrangement was adopted. In 2004, the now called Mixed League adopted a Box system to promote more competitive matches. Intermediate championships (for players under the “A” level) were established in 1934. The present Masters’ competition, originally for men 40 and over, began in 1960 when a trophy was given in memory of Jean Rinfret, a colourful player who was fatally injured in a skiing accident. The Canadian National Tennis Championships were held at the Rideau Tennis and Squash Club in 1977, at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club from 1978 to 1981, and again at the Rideau from 1982 to 1984. For the past few years, the Rideau Tennis Club has hosted the Ontario Open Championships.

6 For many years the Rideau Tennis Club was the home of the & Closed Junior Champion- ships. In 1949, the late E. C. Condon established a separate junior tournament, emblematic of the junior city championship. From 2002 to 2004, the Canadian Under 14 National Championships were held at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club.

In 2016, The Steve Stevens Senior National Outdoor Championships returned to the Nation’s Capital after 24 years. Over 470 players competed at five premier club locations in the Ottawa area: the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club, the Rideau Tennis Club, Tennis Centre West Ottawa, Ottawa Club, and Elmdale Tennis Club. The competition was hot and heavy during the week of August 20th-26th. Players enjoyed two fabulous social events, the opening barbecue at OTLBC and the tournament banquet at the Museum of History. In 2017, the Davis Cup returned to Ottawa and was a spectacular success. This was the first time in many years that these championships had been held in Ottawa. The “main event” was the Davis Cup match between Canada and Great Britain – an historic event, happening in the year of Canada’s 150th birthday. The result of the match is in the history books and Canada lost in spectacular fashion. This event welcomed a record-breaking Davis Cup attendance (in Canada) of 21,482 people in total. Since then, Ottawa has seen the sale of the historic Rideau Tennis Club to the Ottawa Sports and Social Club (OSSC) and it to become the Rideau Sports Davis Cup at Lansdowne Place, 2017 Centre (RSC). The OTLBC has become a non-profit (Photo credits: Daniel Prinn) corporation. The residents of Old Ottawa South and the greater tennis community in Ottawa enjoy the new status and the opportunities to host tournaments and events. Since 2017, Ottawa has seen two events involving Canadian tennis legend , one at NTS/ TCWO for the four-star junior doubles event in May 2019 and “Double Up for Mental Health” in the fall of 2019, with Daniel giving doubles clinics, exhibitions, Q&A and attending the Pro Am fundraiser at the RSC.

NCTA Sponsors

The NCTA wants to express appreciation to our local sponsors, Beth Everson and Kunstadt Sports, for their long-term support! Congratulations to Kunstadt Sports for opening their fourth location in Chelsea this year!

11 OTA Regional Coordinator Report An open letter from Zhenya Kondratovski This was my first year as an OTA Regional Manager for Ottawa and very soon I realized how much work is involved in this position. Both Matt McKinnon and John Wins-Purdy were extremely helpful with their time, advice, showing me the right tools and giving their support and encouragement, as well as help, when needed. Thank you for that, guys! All the OTA tennis member clubs, partners and organizations, especially the NCTA Board of Directors, City of Ottawa, coaches, club managers, players, parents and members were welcoming and supportive of the OTA initiatives and programs I was overseeing. It was very cool to see all the clubs in the area that used the OTA Smash Cage and Road Show, meet so many new people, tennis players and enthusiasts from all walks of life, and appreciate what they do to promote tennis in their local communities. It was an eventful year: Capital Kids (CK) Tennis Program was expanded, thanks to the $317,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant for 2019-2021, in partnership with the OTA, NCTA and the City of Ottawa. We had to find and outfit six new locations and run most of existing ones, hire a CK coordinator and additional coaching staff, undertake marketing and promotion in new areas, connect with community centers, local schools and neighborhoods and finally, deliver the program. Despite the late-arriving spring and a Pay Pal issue that made collecting and tracking registration for CK a much harder task, the program came together well in the end. I would like to thank the Capital Kids Tennis Coordinator Hao Pan for all his hard work and dedication to the program and our coaches and instructors for doing a great job running CK across the city. Close to 1985 kids participated in the CK Program since May, and we had a lot of great feedback from parents and lots of enthusiasm and interest for the indoor component and next year’s program. It is exciting to see more kids pick up tennis rackets and get the opportunity to learn the game, be more active physically and get involved locally. In 2019, the Ottawa region saw two high-profile events involving Canadian legend and tennis icon, Daniel Nestor: first, at the NTS OTA 4-Star Doubles and Mixed Doubles Junior Championships at TCWO in May, then for “Double Up for Mental Health” at RSC in September. At both events, Daniel Nestor put on clinics and made time to meet with players, coaches and parents. At RSC he also participated in exhibition play and a pro-am charity event. It is encouraging to see such events become a more regular feature the Ottawa scene. On the competitive end, the Roman Cup, one of the largest 4-star National Selection Events in Canada with over 420 competitors annually, has remained in Ottawa, currently located at the OTLBC. In 2019 the event was re-branded as the Bloomex Cup, following a three-year partnership agreement between the OTA and Bloomex, a national flower distributor. This was great news for junior development in eastern Ontario. In addition, the sanctioned NCTA City Championships /OTA September events at the OTLBC were raised to a 3.5-star level, enabling Ottawa to bring together more high performance junior players from across Canada than ever before. The September events saw record entries. What a great way to finish the summer season! It’s hard to underestimate the level of effort and support that we received from the OTLBC Executive Director and Manager Maria Pierre-Noel, Board and members to bring those events to the Ottawa tennis community. The NCTA Junior Development Fund (JDF) was unveiled and more than $4,000 in financial assistance has been allocated to the local players who earned a spot in the Rogers Canadian Indoor (six players) and Outdoor National Championships (six players), as well as $1,000 towards regional re-groupings for the junior competitors who participated regularly in the UTR circuit, run by coaches from OAC and Carleton.

12 It was great to see all the years of raising money through the annual Roman Cup Pro-Am at the RTC/ RSC achieve a level where we could provide support to players. I believe that in order to make the JDF a sustainable initiative, we need broader involvement of the tennis community in Ottawa, conversations on ways to raise more money for juniors, steps and directions, finding sponsors, getting parents involved and more coordination between the clubs, academies and the NCTA. That would allow us to have greater collective impact and help young competitive players cover their training and travel expenses. Ultimately, it would help our kids reach their potential and grow competitive and recreational tennis in Ottawa. It was another great year for Canadian tennis, with becoming the first Canadian woman to win a singles title at the 2019 U.S. Open. With Felix Auger Aliassime, and other younger players doing well internationally, the interest and popularity of the sport has definitely been growing. We hope the rising enthusiasm and buzz around tennis will translate into greater numbers of players of all ages at both the competitive and recreational ends. In closing, I would like to thank everyone for the great year to date and I look forward to working with you to grow the game in Ottawa.

Best, Zhenya Kondratovski

Report from the OTA Regional Manager Capital Kids Tennis Program (CK) is a recreational community outreach tennis program for kids from 6 to 15 years old. The program is supported by the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) and the National Capital Tennis Association (NCTA). With a three-year, $317,000 “Grow” Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), six new locations were added (Canterbury, Uplands, Greenboro, St. Germain, Riverain, Barrhaven); three existing locations in the east (Manor Park, Orleans, Owl Park) and three in the West (Tanglewood, Celebration, Carp) were maintained. The aim of the Capital Kids Tennis Program has always been to reach students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and provide access to coaching and equipment in their communities. Reducing barriers to participation and ensuring that kids are learning the game’s fundamentals in a fun and positive environment from certified coaches, sets them up to be more physically active and better integrated into schools and communities. This year the Capital Kids Tennis Program faced a new set of challenges, including finding six new full- service locations as well as running the existing ones, hiring a new coordinator and coaching staff, and undertaking marketing and promotion in new areas. We connected with community centers, local schools and neighborhoods, and engaged with individuals and organizations. Several priority neighborhoods in Ottawa East were identified through the City of Ottawa Manager Kelly Bean, who provided Capital Kids Tennis with tennis courts and permits free of charge. Our program was offered to three age groups: 6-9 years, 10-12 years, and 13-15 years. Despite the late arrival of spring and a Pay Pal issue that made collecting and tracking registration for CK a much harder task, everything came together in the end. We were initially short-staffed and had to scramble to cover some locations, where classes were offered on the same day. Registration numbers were a bit slow initially at some new locations, but by engaging with community centers, getting CK posters to local schools (including translating the poster into French and receiving approval for circulation by the Ottawa Catholic School Board), website ads and canvassing neighborhoods the old-fashioned way, the word got out. Our certified and experienced team of coaches and instructors certainly made a big difference for us on the ground. They helped to build the program up through the summer months and saw many kids return. We had great support from the Canterbury CC and FB parents’ group, who helped promote the program and encourage parents to sign up their kids. Carp Tennis Club, Barrhaven TC and Orleans TC were among our busiest locations. Their continuing support of the CK Tennis Program means a lot and is deeply appreciated. I would like to thank the Capital Kids Tennis Coordinator Hao Pan for all his hard work and dedication and our coaches and instructors for doing a great job running CK across the city. In conclusion, Capital Kids Tennis Program is definitely on a growth trajectory and has the potential to expand into many urban

16 and rural communities, such as Richmond, North Gower and others. Further work remains to be done to develop those pathways, perhaps through more elementary school tournaments, intramural leagues, etc., as there is a substantial difference between a subsidized program like CK and the cost of most clubs’ camps and programming. Another potential branch of Capital Kids could be a program that includes kids with learning disabilities and special needs in partnership with Pro Set for Autism, other local advocacy groups, organizations, and individuals.

A couple of highlights: • Manor Park Council added our event to their community calendar, which helped boost registration; • We received generous support from local tennis clubs, such as Carp Tennis Club, Barrhaven Tennis Club, and Orleans Tennis Club. The program participants were able to benefit from accessing the club amenities; • We generated more program exposure thanks to Rideau-Vanier City Councillor, Mathieu Fleury, for making a promotional video about our program; • We engaged more children and youth from low-income families. A total of 1,900 kids signed up for the program from May to August 2019. Some Capital Kids participants entered the Rogers Rookie Tours this summer, and many parents inquired about fall tennis programs in the Ottawa region.

Message from Hao Pan, the Program Coordinator: As the Program Coordinator, I enjoyed working with our dedicated coaches and the OTA Regional Manager, Zhenya Kondratovski. Thanks to Zhenya’s tireless efforts and support, we were able to secure a team of hard- working, competent coaches. All staff members are certified coaches with experience working with young children and youth. One fun fact I’d like to share is that our coaches were not only from Ottawa, some were from Belgium, Niger, and Barbados. The different backgrounds helped us to be more inclusive and open- minded. After all, we all share the same passion for tennis! I look forward to working with our fantastic team next year.

19 20 Carleton Team Tennis Leagues’ Coordinator: Alex Harea, St. James TC Tennis Director, Carleton Team Tennis Coordinator Tennis is one of the hardest sports for a child to start from scratch. The sport demands a lot from the player physically, mentally, and technically. I speak from the perspective of somebody who was a late bloomer in the sport because I didn’t really train or play competitively until I was 12 or 13 years old. As a coach now, I realize that this is too late for a player to properly develop and excel in the high-performance tennis world. It’s not impossible, but it’s hard, and I did great things considering my late start. One of the reasons for my late move into competitive tennis was the lack of quality recreational tennis programming in Ottawa at the time. There were recreational kids’ programs, but they all took place at expensive private clubs, and they weren’t taken seriously as an important developmental step in the student’s journey to become a tennis player. There was no clear pathway for me to follow as a beginner player to let my parents know why they were spending money on these lessons and what they were investing in. We learned how to hold the racquet, maybe how to hit the ball, but this is not enough when what it really takes to develop a young player is strong physical literacy, tennis fundamentals, goal setting, and fostering a love for the game of tennis. Because of this, I was stuck learning from my dad on a big , with a racquet that was too big for me, and balls that would bounce higher than my head, with no clear understanding of the basic fundamentals that I needed to learn early in order to move to the next step. Junior tennis in Ottawa has come a long way since the days when I was a kid. Largely I think this improvement should be attributed to the work done by John Wins-Purdy and Michael Paduch, among other coaches in the region who worked to develop programs such as Capital Kids and Team Tennis. I have been involved in both of these programs since their inception, working closely with John coaching at numerous public parks, schools, and clubs across the city from Manotick to Orleans. The key to the success of Capital Kids was giving participants a fun and stress-free start in tennis with options to move on from there. Capital Kids is a great tool for giving kids who may have never played tennis a taste of what it’s like, but it’s not necessarily the type of program that you continuously participate in year after year. This is where Team Tennis came into play. I have been coaching Team Tennis at Carleton and TCWO since its inception in Ottawa. The original idea was to treat it like a community soccer league. Kids show up, do a short 15-30 minute warm-up/teaching point and then immediately start playing points. On paper this is great and it has been run with success in Toronto. We will foster the love for tennis so that hopefully kids will want to move on and continue taking lessons and training. However, I received a lot of complaints that the kids were not learning enough fundamental tennis skills and were just getting frustrated that they couldn’t play very well. More importantly, it still was not clear how this program would be a stepping stone in the student’s development. Because of this the numbers started to drop. Carleton’s program was getting smaller and TCWO’s program was not profitable for the club. In 2016, I took over directing the Team Tennis program at Carleton and, in collaboration with Coach Michael Paduch, remodeled the system to what it is today. We pinpointed the three biggest pitfalls of junior tennis in Ottawa: not enough fundamentals being taught, no clear pathway, and a separation between recreational and competitive tennis. In our minds, these two worlds have to coexist in order to thrive.

21 High-performance tennis programs need recreational programs to be successful so that kids continue to move through the system and we regularly develop new and strong competitive players. Recreational programs also need high-performance programs because parents need to see that their money is not only going towards their child having fun and playing some tennis, but that there is also the potential to grow. Because of this, we came up with the Carleton Junior Tennis Pathway which clearly lays out the progression that players can follow within the same organization: Fundamentals -> Team Tennis -> Pre-competitive -> Competitive -> High Performance. We also changed the Team Tennis model slightly. While still being run in a league format, one hour of the two-hour session is dedicated to developing strong physical literacy and tennis fundamentals that the kids can implement in their matches. This shows the student why these skills are so important to their success because they clearly see that when they implement what they learn in their matches, they are more successful. Over the past three years, Carleton Team Tennis has become one of the biggest recreational junior programs in the region. The year is split into three seasons and every season’s registration has filled up for the past two years with 40 kids on court every Saturday and Sunday under the bubble at Carleton University. The effect this has had on our pre-competitive and competitive programming has been clear as well. We have two pre-competitive groups training multiple days a week as well as a regional and national level competitive team and many of these players found their start in Capital Kids and Team Tennis. The goal for future years is to implement this type of pathway in different locations around the city, and collaborate with Capital Kids and other recreational kids programs so that we can put Ottawa on the map nationally as a tennis city.

Tennis in School Clinics Program Coordinator: Zhenya Kondratovski Head Coaches: Nick Patterson, Ramin Anam, Zhenya Kondratovski Tennis in School Clinics provide an opportunity for children in elementary schools across Ottawa to participate in Kids’ Tennis, a method of introducing kids to tennis using size- and age-appropriate equipment. It makes the game accessible and fun for kids. Through the program, students learn about the importance of regular physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. Our goal is to attract new participants at the grassroots level and help surrounding communities raise awareness about opportunities for students to play.

22 2019 Highlights: • We engaged with 64 schools in total and conducted 32 school visits within 61 days. Tennis clinics were given to schools that are interested in hosting a school visit. We were able to work with enthusiastic teachers and principals, and developed new relationships with schools who currently administer tennis teams, organize programs, and participate in an Elementary School Tennis Tournament; • Approximately 7,800 kids received tennis lessons in the gym and outdoors. The kids are exposed to learning progressive tennis fundamentals and physical literacy skills; • We reinforced the community connection with 15 OTA clubs; • Flyers and handouts from local clubs were distributed; • We were able to promote Capital Kids program during the school clinics; • Used equipment (rackets and progressive balls) has been donated to the schools that are in need of tennis gear. We plan to maintain 30 school visits in 2020. Elementary and Middle School Tennis Tournaments Program Coordinator: Zhenya Kondratovski, Matt MacKinnon In 2019, seven schools participated at two locations: Elmdale Tennis Club and Glen Cairn Tennis Club. 125 kids took part in these one-day team tournaments, where students scored points that went to their team total. Lots of matches, great sportsmanship and lots of fun! Red balls and mini nets were used, to build on the school tennis clinics, maximize the space, and simplify the scoring system. 75 kids from 5 schools (St. George, Brother Andre, Broadview, Elmdale, Bayshore) participated in Elmdale ES event and 40 kids from Glen Cairn PS and Bridlewood at Glen Cairn TC. Thanks to both Elmdale (Matt, Theo, and club volunteers), as well as to Glen Cairn (Diane Brazeau, Sandy, and Greg Faux) for their help with organizing, set-up, and overall support. Prizes, ribbons, one giant racket, and much-needed post-match freezees were the rewards for their hard work, team spirit and being such good sports. Seeing kids enjoy this low-key team competition inspires and suggests growing tennis interest in Ottawa schools at the elementary level. Through OTA-supported school visits, tennis was added to schools’ intramural programs during the school year. Those intramural programs were often run by teachers, and progressive tennis equipment or even gymnastics mats were used as the tennis nets. A great number of ES and MS tournaments in May and June would provide a possible pathway for kids becoming more involved in the local community clubs, programs, and camps. At the high school level in 2019, 30 schools and 540 players entered the NCSSAA high school championships. If we could have the Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Athletic Association (OCEAA) follow suit, it would be a step in the right direction. 23 OTA Road Show and Smash Cage

The OTA Smash Cage is a great feature and addition to clubs’ opening celebrations, community fairs, charity events, and local tournaments. Everyone, from kids to adults, loves to give the smash cage a shot. From May to September 2019, the Road Show and Smash Cage with radar gun traveled to 15 clubs in the area (Orleans, BBTC, OTLBC, RLTC, Carp, TCWO, Barrhaven, Manotick, Renfrew, Richmond, Almonte, Glen Cairn, General Burns, Crystal Beach, Elmridge). With different venues, demographics and levels of participants, smash cage brought tennis fun to everyone. We started by testing arm speed (throw) first, then forehand and backhand using off-the-ball tossed or hand-fed for the younger kids, and finally, everyone could hit the ball with a giant racket – that is always a hit! Space permitting, mini nets and red balls were offered for anyone who wanted to rally. We also prepared some Yonex demo rackets for people to try, as well as junior rackets for the little guys.

Green Means Go Coaches: Sean Fowler, Derian Valcourt, Miguel Macias-Carrasco, Marcos Valencia Starting in 2018, this program started to gain popularity when OTA received a grant to run clinics for adults and seniors (50+) at community clubs. NCTA clubs were offered the opportunity again this year to take part in this program, with $150 for coaching hours and free t-shirts for all participants. The program is also open to non-members. Using mini nets, smaller rackets, and low-compression balls, this program/clinic certainly makes learning more comfortable and enjoyable. This year, we organized five Green Means Go clinics: two clinics at Craig Henry TC run by Sean Fowler with a total of 17 players, one at Orleans TC with Derian Valcourt, one at Almonte Tennis Club with Marcos Valencia, and one at Rockliffe Lawn Tennis Club with Miguel Macias-Carrasco. We hope this program becomes even more popular next year and other clubs will add it to their summer events for their adult players.

24 Bloomex Cup 2019

The 2019 Bloomex Cup (formerly Roman Cup), which is a National Junior Open Series, 4-Star U12, U14, U16 and U18 event, wrapped up on Sunday, August 4th with the finals in U10 and U16 at the OTLBC. It was yet another hugely successful OTA 4-star event with 18 categories, including singles and doubles, and over 420 entries in total. Bloomex Canada is a national flower distributor and also a well-known brand internationally that sponsors Davis Cup, Skate Canada, Gymnastics Canada and lots of charities in the world of sports, health care and wellness. The Bloomex partnership with the OTA, starting in spring 2019, gave this event a huge boost. This annual tournament remains a great event that keeps on growing and with it, carries a lot of history, memories, and significance for the junior development and tennis community in Ottawa. It also has a meaningful connection for me, as well as many others who knew Roman Kowalski and who for many years supported our Pro-Am and Fundraiser for junior development in the Ottawa region at the Rideau Tennis Club, which paved the way to JDF (Junior Development Fund, which provides financial assistance to high performance juniors).

Our Ottawa area juniors have done very well at this tournament, but 2019 was one of the best years yet, with a number of winners (BU10 Joshua Adamson, Anna-Raphaelle Serghi GU16, Coby Pearce and Owen Varkey in BDU16), finalists (GU16, GU18 Ariane Souligny, Pascal Tylek with Dermott Duggan in BDU16, Victor Cvetanov Dimitrov BU10), and semi-finalists (BU14 Alex Lungu, BU14 Vikas Nibhanupudi) and GU14 Scarlett Wang finished third overall. Finally, in BD14, three Ottawa teams reached the semis: Alex Lungu and Stefan Martincevic (4), Vlad Pirusca and Jacob Gaudreau Barnes (5), Vikas Nibhanupudi and Maxim Prinoiu! Well done, guys! With two Ottawa teams in the finals of BD16, mentioned earlier, there might be future Davis Cup doubles among Ottawa players! A big thank you to the OTLBC, Maria Pierre-Noel, board, and members for their hard work and wonderful support of the Roman, now Bloomex, Cup again this year, NCTA board, Ziad Halabi, Kartik Vyas and all the OTA team on-site and officials. A huge thank you to Bloomex, title sponsor, and personals thanks to Bloomex’s Dimitri Lokhonia and Sue McDonald for coming on board the OTA this year and their generous support of one of the biggest junior events in Canada. Junior development in Ottawa is growing stronger each year with more results provincially and nationally. The greater depth is a testament to all the hard work that players and coaches put in over the last few years! It’s pretty cool to watch our kids develop, mature and show that Ottawa players belong at the top alongside bigger tennis hubs like Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Great job and keep pursuing the path of excellence, your goals, and dreams! 25 OTA $8,000 Gus Morhart Ontario Open (1000) August 2-5th, 2019

The Rideau Sports Centre hosted the annual Ontario Open, which brought together 43 competitors in men’s singles and 21 in women’s singles, 20 MD teams and 9 WD teams. As always, it was a very successful, high-caliber event, with top and up-and- coming juniors U18, college and ITF players, as well as some local veterans. Gus Morhart was a dedicated OTA staff member and tennis enthusiast, who would come to the Rideau during the Open with a smash cage, his love and dedication to the event. He was a wonderful and kind man, who always had a word of encouragement, a story and a few Russian chocolates for players and kids who played Roman Cup on (OTA Ontario Open Trophies) hard courts right beside the Open. Gus was also an accomplished artist who donated all his paintings to charity and got some help from to showcase his art. Gus will be remembered fondly by many and his name will live on through the Ontario Open. In men’s singles, NCAA Div 1 Niels Van Noord (10) defeated (2) Jesse Flores, NCAA U of Miami graduate and Davis Cup Player for Costa Rica in three sets and doubled up with Sebastian Collard to win MD final agains Jared Horwood and Nick Lagaev. In ladies’ singles, Kristen Borland prevailed in a tight three-set match over Dharani Neroshan, who played Roman Cup as a junior for the past nine years. In ladies’ doubles, Julie Kuszynski and Dharani Neroshan dominated Isabella Baston and Victoria Demuzio. Our local former WTA pros and NCAA Div 1 players (1) Elisabeth Fournier and Petra Januskova teamed up for ladies’ doubles, as well as Laura Pola and Anne-Sophie Courteau, which was a great reunion for players who won here several times in their careers. A big thank you to the RSC for a great job hosting this event, Andrew Chappell and his team for making it another successful event and all the local players who supported it this year!

26 OTA Distinguished Service Award Recipient: Mark Armstrong

Mark Armstrong is a well-known and highly regarded member of the tennis community in Ottawa. His contributions are significant and diverse. As a player, calling the lines at the Rogers Cup or sitting as the Chair Umpire at the NCTA City Championships, a volunteer at the Steve Stevens Nationals (and many other tournaments), a Board member at his club and for the NCTA, he has been giving back to the tennis community for more than 50 years. Mark has been an active participant in the tennis community since High School when he became a member of the Deep River Yacht and Tennis Club where he played through his school and university years. This is where he started contributing to the community when he joined the Junior Tennis Committee and began to organize tournaments and events. This continued while he was at university (U of T) where he organized the college intramural tournament. After university, Mark embarked upon a career as a High School teacher. He moved to Ottawa in 1969 and joined the Rideau Tennis Club where he has now reached his 50th anniversary as a member. Mark’s contributions to the club were commemorated by a special recognition award given to him in 2012. It was shortly after joining the Rideau that Mark developed an interest in officiating tennis matches. He completed the ITF White Badge training and began calling the lines at local tournaments. In those days, the National Closed Championships were held at the Rideau Club and Mark became a regular member of the officiating crew both here and when the tournament was subsequently moved to the Ontario Racquets Club in Mississauga. The Ontario Closed was discontinued around 1990 and Mark moved on to officiating at the Rogers Cup, which he did through most of the 1990s. It was around this time that Mark started working with the National Capital Tennis Association. He had retired from his teaching career and started to help in the office, primarily with the organization of tournaments and leagues. He joined the Board of the NCTA in 2001 and served as a Director-at-Large where he was a valued and highly respected contributor to the development of tennis in the region. Throughout this period, Mark continued to volunteer and support the Rideau Club where he served on the Board of Directors for many years and was a member of the Tennis Committee where he was an invaluable asset to the Tennis Director. He captained and organized the club’s teams playing in the NCTA leagues for many seasons, organized and ran both the club’s annual tournament working alongside head Pro, Dale Power, and revived the President’s Cup Invitational tournament for the club’s top players. Mark has continued to help organize and run tournaments including many OTA sanctioned junior events as well as volunteering at the Ontario Open and Roman Cup events. In recent years, Mark was injured in a horrendous car accident. He barely completed his lengthy rehabilitation and physiotherapy before getting involved again - back on the court officiating and helping with the next tournament. His dedication to junior and competitive tennis is remarkable, as well as his desire to give back and be of help, selflessly, never asking for any credit, compensation, or recognition. Mark continues to contribute to the tennis community as a player, volunteer and official. He is the go-to person for local tournaments and can often be seen in the chair umpiring the finals at the City Championships and other high-profile events. He plays in the local Men’s seniors league and in the National Senior championships (where he also volunteers at the tournament control desk). In 2018, Mark became a member of the NCTA’s Junior Development Committee, which organizes fundraising events and manages a fund of money that is targeted to support top juniors in the City. We thank Mark for everything that he has done and continues to do for our tennis community. 27 Tennis in the Community

28 Carleton Tennis Development Center: 2019 Summary

By Michael Paduch, Carleton Tennis Development Center (TDC) program head coach As we enter the 2019-2020 tennis training season, it is time to reflect on the training season just behind us. 2018-2019 season has been without a doubt the best season in the history of our program. Our formula, based on an integrated pathway from introductory Team Tennis through Pre-Competitive to Competitive Tennis in the Community groups, finally made it into a cohesive, smooth delivery. I credit a lot of success in this dimension of programming to my fellow coach Alex Harea and our team of assistant coaches, who made it all possible. The culture that was once so pervasive and hard to eliminate from recreational to competitive sport streams is rapidly disappearing as parents, children and coaches start to finally comprehend that love of tennis is what drives it all. As a young child starts to get better at the game and starts enjoying all aspects of it, there is no need to artificially constrain their growth and interest in the game by assigning labels and limiting prematurely what is available to them. As a result of this programming approach, we were able to infuse the local tennis circuit with many new faces, with young children who would have never thought of competing in tennis events only two years ago, and who are now - in fact literally now as I write these words - competing in fierce matches at OAC in the UTR Circuit, and who occupied several U9/U10 OTA tournaments earlier in summer in several locations around the City (Hillcrest, OTLBC, OAC and several more). I consider this transformation of Carleton system as one of the biggest achievements of the season and I hope it will only grow from here. (The team at practice working on fitness skills - The past season allowed us to organize an entirely new Savina Radost, Jenna Jenkins, Francesco Carnero) and we hope sustainable initiative: the out-of-town, competitive regrouping in Mont-Tremblant for players who met participation and performance criteria associated with the UTR Fall and Winter Junior Competitive Circuit. The kids had an amazing time with two Carleton and two OAC coaches working together on clay surface with a strong group of up-and-coming younger juniors of varying ages. The event is considered a reward and players are invited to participate based on a specifically defined set of competitive commitments. Speaking of the Circuit, the initiative created by a collective of coaches is entering its 4th season in 2020. It has been a tremendous hit among the players and parents, as it addresses a major gap in developmental match play opportunity for Ottawa area juniors. With level-based flights, three matches guaranteed and an ability to coach on change-overs, the series of six tournaments (three in the fall, three in the winter) allowed over 120 competitors show their skills and increase their UTR rating. On the more advanced side of our programming, the past season resulted in the most significant increase in national ranking position of our players since the TDC creation. Several of our players entered the top 100 national ranking in their age groups (Savina Radost, Matthew Schenk-Pare, Francesco Carnero, Andreas Balteanu) while the best performing competitor of the season, Ashvini Gopalan, reached her personal best ranking so far: the 11th spot in Canada in U12 Girls Singles and 29 14th in doubles. All of that has been achieved in a predominantly group training model, without having to rely on expensive, numerous private lessons. Instead, with a strong focus on cooperation, optimal group composition and true team spirit among the players, we were able to position ourselves for growth as we prepared for 2019-2020. As in the past years, the players on our team assisted pro tennis events as ball boys and girls (ITF Gatineau event) and attended Rogers Cup in Montreal. However, we cancelled the team travel for the first time ever due to a scheduling conflict with Bloomex (formerly Roman Cup) event in Ottawa. On behalf of Carleton TDC, I would like to thank all the families for their support of our tennis mission. I would like to express my gratitude to all the young people I have had the privilege of coaching: your hard work and dedication to this game and to personal growth is never unnoticed and I want you all to know that. All the best to every single one of you on and off court in 2019-2020 season. And last but not least, a big thank you to Coach Tony Milo for his ongoing support and encouragement. All this hard work is so much easier when we know you support us.

31 Richmond Good Samaritan League

By Sylvain Sauve RGSSL Tennis Club (Richmond Good Samaritan League Tennis Club) was formed with the vision of promoting inclusion for people living with disabilities in my town of Richmond. Having a son with autism and facing many, many hurdles to help my son, I decided to create my own club where I can find a group of Good Samaritans to help this vision come to life. Some of the Good Samaritans who have helped me along the way are Zhenya Kondratovski and Horacio Loor. Zhenya has helped by offering himself for the 2 days at Kanata Academy and the Family Fun Day in Richmond which have helped generate interest in tennis in Richmond. Horacio has been giving lessons all summer long with the passion that kept people coming back for more lessons and generating interest in creating a new club.

2019 RVA Family Fun Day Tennis Demo with Zhenya Kondratovski from the OTA

From the people who that took lessons, I was able to find enough interest to form an executive for the 2020 season. I am looking forward to the AGM so we can elect an official executive. This club will be a shared format with non-members as the club will be using time zones and having one tennis court open to the public at all times. Once the executive is in place, I hope that the city gives us a contract so we can move forward with the OTA as a proud supporter of the club and I can move forward with my vision. The RGSSL Tennis Club believes that respect has no boundaries as it is to be given at all times. We can help each other become better people by sharing this true respect and helping others that are living difficult times. The club will be using a Good Samaritan Reward System - when members choose to volunteer for the club, they will accumulate points towards next year’s membership. A way of thanking them for their efforts. For more information about RGSSL Tennis Club, please visit http://www.richmondtennisclub.ca.
