This has been a busy year and I hope you enjoy reading about what the NCTA has been doing. It’s also a very exciting time in Canadian tennis with record breaking performances from our young players on the world stage – especially our ladies where, at the time of writing, Canada claims the #5 woman in the world in singles and our own Gabriella Dabrowski at #9 in doubles. Let’s hope that their success stimulates a resurgence in interest in tennis and brings new young members to our clubs. The competitive game in Ottawa was strong this year including our City Championships and other tournaments, our inter-club leagues and our Bloomex Cup tournament (formerly Roman Cup) which is the largest junior tournament of its kind in the country. The NCTA is proud to have been able to provide financial support to 9 deserving juniors who qualified for national championships through our Junior Development Fund. This year saw the relaunch of the Capital Kids program with year one of our new Trillium grant being activated to support this flagship program. We achieved impressive participation and are well on our way to making this a self-sustaining program when the grant expires. This was supported by a very active school program where we were able to visit some 32 schools and reach 7800 kids giving then a tennis experience that we hope will encourage them to make our sport part of their future. We are also pleased to have assisted in organizing the Ottawa High School Championships, when the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association (NCSSAA) needed to find a convenor on a short notice when there was a real danger that it would not be able to happen. A key priority for most of our member clubs is the condition of their tennis courts and other infrastructure. The City of Ottawa is responsible for re-building the courts at municipal clubs when the sub-surface deteriorates to the point where filling cracks is no longer viable. However, the City has many other demands on its limited funds and is not able to meet the expectations that Clubs have based on the current agreement with the City. The NCTA is currently working with the City Administration, the Ottawa Sports Commissioner (Counsellor Fleury) and the Ottawa Sports Council to find a realistic solution. Our non- municipal clubs are also facing challenges of their own. For example, both OTLBC and ONEC have clubhouses that require major investments. Finally, I am proud to share with you all that Mark Armstrong, a long-time contributing member of our tennis community, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Ontario Tennis Association. This is the highest honor that can be awarded to an individual. I encourage you to read the article on Mark’s support for tennis and join us all in thanking him for his work and congratulating him on this excellent achievement. 3 NCTA VISION The NCTA is first and foremost an association of tennis clubs so our primary objective is to create a vibrant and growing portfolio of tennis clubs. We aim to partner with the OTA and the City of Ottawa to create pathways that will encourage people to join tennis clubs. This includes engaging youth (and their parents), introducing them to tennis and then guiding them towards their nearest tennis club to sustain their interest. The key challenge
