Notes for SAMUEL SNODDY: The following exerpt is from, "Family History and Genealogy of James Snoddy of White Deer Valley and Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania". After his wife's death, Samuel moved to Parke County, Indiana, but in a year or so, he return to Pennsylvania. In 1852, he sought Indiana with his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, and took her to live in the home of his son, Samuel I. at Snoddy's Mill. On September 5, 1852, during the cholera epidemic, he died at Fort Wayne Indiana [Died on a canal boat on the Wabash and Erie Canal between Toledo, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana]. More About SAMUEL SNODDY: Fact 1: Lycoming County, PA Fact 2: 1849, Went to Parke Co, IN Fact 3: 1850, Went back to PA Fact 4: 1852, Back to Indiana w/dau. Sarah Elizabeth Fact 5: Sep 05, 1852, Died during cholera epidemic, Ft Wayne, IN Fact 6: Member of Presbyterian Church Notes for SARAH IRWIN: Taken from family book compiled by Mrs. Evea Cook Sanders and Mrs. Wanda Lee Lorton Walton - printed in 1959 In Scotland, the first homes of the Irvines (Irwins) were in that part of Ayrshire called Cunningham, where they gave their name to the river Irvine. Irvine is one of the 66 Royal Burghs in Scotland and has been such, since the days of Bruce. When the Irvines shifted to Dumfrieshire, they were for several generations, hereditary mayors of the town of Dumfrie. This was long before the reign of King Robert of Bruce. Crine Erwine (or Irwin) was abthane of Dull and Seneschal and Collector of all the King's rent in the Western Isles. He married Beatrix, eldest daughter of Malcom II, and was the father of Duncan I, King of Scotland. Duncan, slain by Macbeth, was actually an Irvine, as was his son Malcom III, who in turn overthrew Macbeth and restored the Irvines to the throne of Scotland. His descendants to Alexander III, predecessor of Robert Bruce were therefore Irvines. The period of these Kings is from 1034 to 1285. All the subsequent Kings of Scotland and England after the union of Scotland and England are therefore descendants of Crine Irvine, father of Duncan I. In Scotland the Irwin Clan runs far back into antiquity. The name is found in various forms: Irwin, Irvine, Irving and Erwin being the most frequent. The most complete published account of this ancient Clan of Borderers is found in a richly illustrated volume, now out of print. "The Irvings, Irwins, Irvines, Erinveines, or any other spelling of the name: An Old Scots Border Clan" (Aberdeen, Rosemont Press, 1907) was written by its then Chieftain, Colonel John Beaufin Irving of Bonshaw, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. A feature of this book is a series of colored plates illustrating the minor variations of the Coat of Arms in different families of the Clan. But in all appear the three Holly leaves, green upon a field of silver, two and one, familiar to all true Irwins. --"The Descendants of Wm. Irwin of New York" by Hosmer --World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. D, p. 2136 Children of SAMUEL SNODDY and SARAH IRWIN are: 4 9. i. JANE SNODDY, b. Feb 08, 1823, Lycoming Co, PA; d. “Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. Tom Keener of the Allen Heritage Guild has better copies of all these photographs and is currently working on an Allen history book. Keener offices at the Allen Public Library. Gwen was a longtime Allen resident with an avid interest in this area’s history. Some of her sources were: Pioneering in North Texas by Capt. Roy and Helen Hall, The History of Collin County by Stambaugh & Stambaugh, The Brown Papers by George Pearis Brown, The Peters Colony of Texas by Seymour V. Conner, Collin County census & tax records and verbal history from local long-time residents of the county. She does not document all of her sources.

The rich, varied heritage of the Southwest reflects all the influences of its·contributors: the Native American, the Spaniard, the Frenchman. and the Englishman. The deeds and contri butions of the various races in the Southwest have been recorded and acknowledged--save that·of ·the·Blacks. One of the most exciting ·stories in this region is the struggle ·to bring a uniform code of law to the fringe of the closing frontier.· This is· a chapter of that forgottel') story and that forgotten race.
