U40 ALUMNI LEADER – KAAMIL A. HAIDER (B.F.A. ‘17) Co-recipient College of Design

At the age of six, Kaamil A. Haider migrated from Somalia in 1990 due to civil war—carrying the heart and soul of its culture into his life’s work.

Kaamil started in chemistry at the University but finished in 2017 with a degree in graphic design. Spurred on by the lack of representation of Somali design aesthetics in art and design history, he created “Stamps of Somalia: Illuminating a Nation” as his senior project. Rooted in the history of Somalia and its long-lost postal system due to war, the project translated geographic and cultural imagery into postage stamp design and opened dialogue within and outside the Somali community through the universal language of art and design.

Community-oriented throughout his entire academic career, Kaamil connected his education with his passion, co-founding Soomaal House of Art, a Somali visual artists collective. Beyond exhibitions and educational programming, the organization helps Somali youth see the potential of careers in the arts and advocates for policy to advance the role of Somali visual artists. Additional support for his community includes creating branding for the Somali Museum of Minnesota and serving as a graphic designer for the Minnesota History Museum’s Somali exhibition.

Kaamil’s strong community ties and leadership skills, paired with his creative eye for art and design, will continue to build bridges between Somali Minnesotans and Minnesotans of all cultures.

U40 ALUMNI LEADER – ERIC SANNERUD (B.S. ‘13) Co-recipient College of Continuing and Professional Studies

After graduating from the U in 2013, Eric Sannerud has worked tirelessly to build a brighter future for both local and global agricultural and food communities. A 4th generation farmer and entrepreneur, he has built his own business, helped create new tax policies for farmers, and actively serves as a mentor to young food producers in many capacities.

Eric is CEO and co-founder of Mighty Axe Hops, a Minnesota hops farm that supplies local craft brewers. He is also co-founder of Sandbox Center for Regenerative Entrepreneurship, an incubator that encourages a healthier food system by regenerating our land, economy, and society. In addition, Eric helped start Urban Oasis, a sustainable food center, and managed their successful campaign to win the Saint Paul Foundation’s $1 Million Idea Challenge. Instrumental in establishing a first- in-the-country tax credit law in Minnesota, Eric coordinated lobbying efforts to see landowners receive a state income tax credit when they sell or rent land to a beginning farmer, thusly incentivizing the passing on of farm land to the next generation.

Eric is dedicated to inspiring young people in both business and agricultural change-making. Since he graduated, he has participated in the CFANS Mentor Program every year, and his business, Mighty Hops, recruits via the St. Paul Campus Career and Internship Fair. Graduating in 1979 from the College of Pharmacy, Scott has remained involved as a Life Member of the UMAA and Pharmacy Alumni Society. A loyal advocate and contributor to the College of Pharmacy’s Century Mortar Club (CMC), he has served on its board of the directors as both a president and board member for 14 years. Known for always saying “yes” when his help is needed, Scott has been an essential part of the University’s alumni landscape. Committed to the development of students, Scott has played the role of formal and informal mentor to countless undergraduates. This exemplary service was recognized when he was awarded the Pharmacy Alumni Society’s “Mentor of the Year” Award. He’s made himself available to students as a contact in the pharmaceutical industry since he graduated, and is always willing to connect with them to offer helpful career advice. Recently retired, Scott made his mark with a prolific career in pharmaceuticals — namely as a government affairs manager. Thanks to that specialized experience, he’s been able to lend a unique view on policy to the CMC board. His invaluable leadership, knowledge, and passion has been, and continues to be, indispensable to the college, University, its students and alumni.

TODD WILLIAMS (B.S.B. ‘91) CARLSON SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT

Dedicated to building up and inspiring the University’s future business leaders, Todd Williams has consistently lent his time and experience to students, both prospective and current. Having graduated with a business degree in 1991, Todd’s service on the UMAA board and the Carlson School of Management Undergraduate Advisory Board has helped set in motion and define integral diversity initiatives at the U of M.

Known for asking the simple yet imperative question “How can I help?”, Todd, who holds the position of Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Target Corporation, has enthusiastically engaged with the Carlson School in a wide variety of ways. He’s volunteered his time to both students and leadership in the realms of mentorship, strategy, consultation, speaking engagements, and case competitions — including the 2017 Target Business Innovation Challenge, which called for students to consider the role gender plays in toy merchandising. When the college sought out a keynote speaker to address over 100 underrepresented high school students about pursuing careers in business, Todd was eager to share his wisdom as someone who had once been in their shoes. Over the years, he has positioned himself as a patient, available resource to University leadership by listening, sharing connections, and helping strategize on essential initiatives.

His commitment to helping the school move diversity and inclusion efforts forward has not only made a tangible, positive impact on the undergraduate experience, but has helped usher in a new era at the University.
