ZANDER ALUMNI AWARD FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP RECIPIENTS This is awarded to undergraduate students for their exceptional academic achievement, leadership, service and personal character. Each recipient receives a $2,000 scholarship from the University of Minnesota Alumni Association in honor of Donald R. Zander. Candidates for this award are selected from the recipients of the 2018 President’s Student Leadership and Service Award. MARY A. MCEVOY AWARD FOR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP RECIPIENTS Caleb Murphy Medical School (M.D., M.B.A. ’18) Caleb grew up in Ramsey, MN and was, until very recently, a lifelong Minnesotan. After graduating from Northwestern College (Saint Paul, MN) with a biology degree, he attended the University of Minnesota for professional school, graduating with his M.D. and M.B.A. degrees. He recently began internal medicine residency at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. His main career interests include primary care (especially working with military veterans) and finding safer and more cost-effective ways to design and deliver healthcare. As a U of M student, he served on the American College of Physicians’ national health policy committee, won funding in a healthcare innovation competition to continue his efforts promoting high-value clinical practices, and helped author a report addressing employment barriers in under-resourced Minneapolis neighborhoods with the University’s Center for Integrative Leadership. Morrine Omolo College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (M.S. ‘21) Mary A. McEvoy Award Speaker Morrine Omolo, is a Zawadi Africa Education Fund Scholar from Kenya. She obtained her BSc. in biochemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ and an M.S. in food science from U of M. Presently, she is a doctoral student and Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellow at the U of M Department of Food Science and Nutrition. Morrine is the 2018 awardee of the Mary A. McEvoy Award, the President’s Student Leadership and Service Award and the CFANS Alumni Society Graduate Student Leadership Award. Outside of class and lab, Morrine has served on various leadership and service roles, including as a graduate student representative to the U of M Board of Regents. Most recently, she was selected to serve on the Graduate School Advisory Board. Her dream in life is world peace…but for now, she is content with investigating how and why bad bacteria in food do such a good job at making us sick. 2 DONALD R. ZANDER ALUMNI AWARD FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP RECIPIENTS David Begelman College of Biological Sciences (B.S. ‘18) David graduated with a major in neuroscience and will be pursuing medical and graduate school in the future. Apart from sharing silly love stories, he enjoys asking questions and searching for the answers. David founded the Swipe Out Hunger chapter and worked alongside numerous organizations such as Nutritious U Pantry, Aramark, and Boynton Health Service to advocate for students undergoing food insecurity and homelessness. David created a new resource on campus that provides unused dining hall meals to students undergoing food insecurity through a donation system. Monica Delgado College of Liberal Arts (B.A. ‘18) Monica graduated from the University of Minnesota in May 2018 with a major in political science and minors in public health and neuroscience. She is passionate about global and local health and related health policy, and is currently pursuing a law degree at the University of Wisconsin. Monica’s interest in the mutual influence between communities and health systems was a constant throughout her undergraduate career; she worked at the U’s Office for Public Engagement, the Minnesota State Legislature, a local Minneapolis environmental law firm, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.
