On September 14, the Golden Gophers will open the season against San Jose State of the Big West Conference in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. San Jose State fmished the 1990 campaign at 9-2-1 overall and 7-0 in the Big West. This will mark the first meeting between the two schools. The San Jose State Spartans are under the leadership of second-year head coach Terry Shea. Shea, the 1990 Big West Coach-of-the-Year, took over the Spartan head job after serving two years as the offensive coordinator at the Univer sity of California. In his inaugural season he led San Jose State to a 48-24 win over MAC Champion, Central Michigan University Chippewas in last season's California Raisin Bowl. The Spartans' return 36lettermen (17 offense, 19 defense). Among the 17 offensive returnees, six were starters on last season's team that averaged 291.6 yards per game via the airways (eighth best in the country), and produced 27 touch downs. Returning players on offense include the Spartans one-two punch of tight-end Bryce Burnett and slot receiver Bobby Blackmon. Burnett caught 23 passes for 451 yards and four TD's while Blackmon, the team's leading receiver, accounted for 599 yards on 39 receptions and six touchdowns. A big question mark for them will be replacing last season's signal caller Ralph Martini, who passed for over 2,900 yards and threw 23 TD's, but the Spartans have two capable quarterbacks to build around Matt Veatch and Jeff Garcia. Defensively, the Spartans are in a rebuilding stage in the linebacking corps with only one player returning from last season's two-deep. The secondary looms to be the most consistent with the return of safeties Heshimo Colar and Anthony Washington. Colar, a three-year starter and 1990 second-team All-Big West choice is the team's top returning tackler with 67 stops. Washington, an honorable mention Big West selection in 1990, tallied nine quar terback sacks and added 14 tackles for losses totaling 88 yards. Matching 1990's standard will be a difficult task for the Spartans, but several key weapons still remain in Terry Shea's arsenal for the 1991 season. • • N M • • 0 '1' A 1991 FOOTBALLROSTER NAME POS HT WT AGE* LTRS YR ELIO HOMETOWN & HIGH SCHOOL 71 Ballard.
