Drosera Intermedia in a Northern Michigan Bog
Assessment of microhabitat differences between Drosera rotundifolia and Drosera intermedia in a northern Michigan bog Andrew David University of Michigan Biological Station EEB 381, General Ecology August 19, 2010 Professor Cathy Bach Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate microhabitat differences between two species of sundews, Drosera rotundifolia and Drosera intermedia. I tested several hypotheses: D. rotundifolia density increases with increasing height above a fixed low point, while D. intermedia density decreases with height; D. rotundifolia grows primarily on red Sphagnum moss, while D. intermedia grows primarily on green Sphagnum; the densities of both Drosera species increase with decreasing pH; the density of neither Drosera species is affected by water conductivity or dissolved oxygen content. At Mud Lake Bog in Cheboygan County, Michigan, I recorded the species of Drosera plants, as well as the height of the plants above a fixed low point and the color of Sphagnum moss on which they were growing. I also measured the pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen content of the water in which the plants were growing. Densities of both Drosera species decreased with increasing height, though the trend was stronger for D. intermedia. D. rotundifolia grew significantly more on red Sphagnum than did D. intermedia, while D. intermedia grew significantly more on green Sphagnum than did D. rotundifolia. D. rotundifolia density varied significantly with neither pH, conductivity, nor dissolved oxygen. D. intermedia density increased significantly with decreasing pH and increasing conductivity, but not with dissolved oxygen. My results were consistent with past research, and conclusively illustrated the differences in microhabitat preferences between the two Drosera species. -

Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- ERICACEAE ERICACEAE (Heath Family) A family of about 107 genera and 3400 species, primarily shrubs, small trees, and subshrubs, nearly cosmopolitan. The Ericaceae is very important in our area, with a great diversity of genera and species, many of them rather narrowly endemic. Our area is one of the north temperate centers of diversity for the Ericaceae. Along with Quercus and Pinus, various members of this family are dominant in much of our landscape. References: Kron et al. (2002); Wood (1961); Judd & Kron (1993); Kron & Chase (1993); Luteyn et al. (1996)=L; Dorr & Barrie (1993); Cullings & Hileman (1997). Main Key, for use with flowering or fruiting material 1 Plant an herb, subshrub, or sprawling shrub, not clonal by underground rhizomes (except Gaultheria procumbens and Epigaea repens), rarely more than 3 dm tall; plants mycotrophic or hemi-mycotrophic (except Epigaea, Gaultheria, and Arctostaphylos). 2 Plants without chlorophyll (fully mycotrophic); stems fleshy; leaves represented by bract-like scales, white or variously colored, but not green; pollen grains single; [subfamily Monotropoideae; section Monotropeae]. 3 Petals united; fruit nodding, a berry; flower and fruit several per stem . Monotropsis 3 Petals separate; fruit erect, a capsule; flower and fruit 1-several per stem. 4 Flowers few to many, racemose; stem pubescent, at least in the inflorescence; plant yellow, orange, or red when fresh, aging or drying dark brown ...............................................Hypopitys 4 Flower solitary; stem glabrous; plant white (rarely pink) when fresh, aging or drying black . Monotropa 2 Plants with chlorophyll (hemi-mycotrophic or autotrophic); stems woody; leaves present and well-developed, green; pollen grains in tetrads (single in Orthilia). -

CONNECTICUT COASTAL PLANTING GUIDE Juliana Barrett Connecticut Sea Grant, University of Connecticut [email protected] CTSG-11-03 Connecticut Sea Grant College Program 2011 Connecticut Coastal Planting Guide This guide will be a useful tool for those interested in native landscaping within Connecticut’s coastal region. It contains a list of plants that will grow well along Long Island Sound and several miles inland. Connecticut’s coastal zone is defined here as the coastal ecoregion of Dowhan and Craig (1976) (Figure 1). An ecoregion is an area of similar landforms, climate, and biota. This region, divided below into eastern and western coastal ecoregions (V-A and V-B), extends 5 to 7 miles inland and has a long frost-free season (average approximately 180 days in the west, and 195 days in the east). Within this region, there are a wide variety of habitats and growing conditions, including tidal marshes and coastal forests, soils ranging from fine silts to sandy or rocky soils, and soil moisture conditions ranging from wet or moist to very dry. Vegetation in a particular area depends on a complex suite of site characteristics including geology and soils, local climate, topography, land use history and biotic factors.
