WHAT CAN YOU BUILD ON A FOUNDATION OF ICE?

FSH Annual Report Layout 3.indd 1 9/8/2014 3:43:09 PM 2 MISSION Our mission is to transform young lives and help under-served girls grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement.

Founded in 1997, in Harlem (FSH) uses the artistic discipline of figure skating as a powerful magnet to provide innovative education and fitness programs that promote academic success, physical health, and emotional well-being in a safe and supportive environment.

Dear Friends of Figure Skating in Harlem,

It is with my deepest gratitude that I thank the entire FSH family—staff, tutors, counselors, coaches, volunteers, parents, and supporters. You have inspired our growth and given our students the foundation to excel in their lives.

During the recent Winter Olympics, you may have seen us here, there and everywhere. Our girls performed in some of City’s most iconic venues from Times Square to Grand Central Station. Through a vital partnership with Citi, we were featured in a commercial with , and networks from NBC to CNN highlighted our skating and educational success stories.

In the spring we held two of our signature events: our sold out community ice show “Skate! In the Name of Love” hosted by Mary Wilson, and our Skating with the Stars benefit gala with surprise special guest Mayor Michael Bloomberg who spoke eloquently about the importance of programs like ours that empower girls through education and sport to create unlimited possibilities.

This coming year, we are thrilled to introduce an innovative initiative using skating to peek our girls interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). And looking further ahead, after completing a strategic planning process with Dunch Arts, our Board of Directors is prepared to lead the way for replicating our programs in other communities in need from East New York to Detroit. All of this comes at a time when the International Olympic Committee highlighted Figure Skating in Harlem as a model youth development organization.

Again, I am deeply appreciative to all of you who have invested in our vision and continue to enthusiastically help us provide the very best opportunities for our future leaders.

Warmest regards,

Sharon Cohen Founder and Executive Director

Building Strong Minds and Healthy Bodies

After-school time is critical to the positive development of young people, especially to children from low-income circumstances who receive the most benefit from a quality program. Sixty-six percent of FSH students come from families whose income is below $45,000.

We know that high expectations lead to high performance. Accordingly, each year, all FSH students are grouped by age and grade level from our youngest Stars and Pros to our older Champs and Leaders. Each student signs a Letter of Commitment that focuses on preparation, integrity and academic excellence, helping our girls turn on their inner light and find their gifts.

In the 2013-2014 season, more than 200 girls from the 1st to the 12th grade participated in FSH programs which focus on academic support, physical fitness, health, life skills, career exploration, skating history, financial literacy, writing and communications, engaging them in up to 560 hours of programming per year.

Our After School Program I.C.E. = I CAN EXCEL

Education comes first at Figure Skating in Harlem. To achieve this goal, FSH students are immersed in a comprehensive learning program with goals known as S.K.A.T.E.

Student-Centered It is essential that our curriculum focus on the needs of our students by incorporating multiple learning styles and high interest literature.

Knowledge and Skills-Based Learning Common Core and age appropriate state standards and skills help develop student understanding.

Activity-Rich Hands on activities, whenever possible, make lessons come alive.

Time to Write Students are guided and have time to craft quality written work in every class.

Embedded Assessments To meet learning benchmarks, lessons are designed with assessments in mind so that teachers can accurately see student progress.

Leading Edge Academic Curriculum

Our Leading Edge Academic Curriculum aligns with New York State Common Core Standards, providing educational support through yearlong cultural enrichment and life skills classes taught by certified teachers and social workers. Additionally, daily academic tutoring, test preparation and high school and college guidance support the girls as they plan their academic futures.

FSH Annual Report Layout 3.indd 6 9/8/2014 3:43:18 PM 7 EDUCATIONEDUCATION

Academic Skills Assessment

We maintain a 4:1 student-tutor ratio to create a dynamic, supportive environment that encourages active learning up to three afternoons a week. We monitor student progress through quarterly report card evaluation and a computerized assessment tool that measures core reading, writing and math competencies. The results showed overall improvement in reading and math proficiency with more girls performing at or above grade level by the end of the season.

Girls Off Ice Fitness Investment Training (GO-FIT)

FSH introduced an innovative, customized curriculum that takes into account the lack of minority women represented in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professions and introduces these subjects in a creative way. They learn about laws of motion, physics and other STEM concepts that apply to spinning, jumping and other moves that they perform when skating. This pilot program is becoming a unique fixture in our girls’ repertoire and is designed to improve their performance on and off the ice, and engage them in STEM fields to promote interest in science.

Continuing to Serve Girls in the Spring and Summer

To address the issue of summer learning loss, which affects low income students at a steeper rate than that of their peers, FSH held its third Summer Dreams Camp in July and August. Students received daily instruction in reading, writing and math in our Academic Center as well as science classes and off-ice conditioning. Our girls have a book club and they go on weekly excursions around the city. Skating takes place in Queens at City Ice Pavilion.

Improving Health and Physical Fitness

Through the ice skating component of our program, our students are physically active as they experience the joys of figure skating in a safe and supportive environment. Focus, determination, teamwork, resiliency and goal setting are all lessons they can apply in the classroom, and to life. Our vision is to empower every young girl, regardless of her socio-economic background, with the foundation and skills to achieve her dreams.

On The Ice

Our students learn first-hand that gliding over a cold, slippery surface with grace and style requires an incredible amount of concentrated physical and mental discipline, hard work, and dedication. Throughout the year, students measure their progress toward their ice skating goals with the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills tests. We emphasize that each of their attainments on the ice models how they can set goals and pursue success in all other aspects of their lives.

Students spend between 3 and 6 hours a week engaged in on-ice instruction. Sessions take place at Riverbank State Park in Harlem and at Lasker Rink in Central Park. During Summer Dreams Camp, students spend six hours per week on the ice at the City Ice Pavilion in Queens.

Seventeen instructors and 20 on-ice volunteers closely support our students as they approach the challenges of figure skating.

In today’s world with the focus on high grades, test scores, and college prep, many young people are lost when it comes to basic life skills, emotional health and maturity needed to help them adapt to a changing world. Empowerment of women and girls is essential to improving the quality of life for all. For this reason, FSH’s curriculum expands beyond reading, writing and math to include real world basics that are often not taught in school, like nutrition, emotional well- being and financial literacy.

Weekly Life Skills Classes

Two licensed certified social workers help our girls to identify themselves as powerful, intelligent and self-aware. They become competent in skills that will transition them into successful adults like conflict resolution, managing stress, overcoming peer pressure and responding appropriately to situations involving bullying. These very popular classes give our students a chance to find their voice and develop their sense of self.

94% of students surveyed report feeling safe and supported at FSH.

Career Exploration

Career Week, held in winter and in spring, provides a sneak-peek into exciting professions, and offers panel discussions and small group meetings with high powered professionals. This year, one of the places FSH students visited was CNN studios. These visits help FSH students explore various careers of interest and learn what education and training is needed.
