Despite a shortened 2020 season, UC finished the year, 14-2 and earned the 23rd nation- al ranking in the final NFCA DII Top 25 poll. The start to the 2020 season was the best in program history. In 2019, the Golden Eagles went 33-21 on the season and posted a 21-11 MEC record. The team had two first team ALL MEC selections and two NFCA All-Region selections. In addition, Stiles earned her 200th career victory on February 24th, in a double header sweep of Mercyhurst. In 2018 Charleston went 27-25 on the season posting a 12-20 MEC record. In 2017 She led UC to a 37-21 record with five All-Conference members. In her first season Stiles and the Golden Eagles reached the NCAA tournament for the third time in four seasons. Stiles joined the UC Athletic Department staff in September of 2016 after spending the last six seasons (2011-16) as head softball coach at Davis & Elkins College. She posted a 33-win season in 2016 and has won at least 20 games in four of her six seasons at the helm of Senator softball, the only four in the past 22 seasons at Davis & Elkins. Stiles also served Davis & Elkins in additional administrative roles, acting as the As- sistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Senior Woman Administrator. Prior to taking over Senator softball in 2011, she was on staff at Midwestern State where as an assistant her team finished the 2010 season with a 54-10 record. In addition, the Mustangs were named Lone Star Conference Regular Season Champions and NCAA Division II South Central Regional Fi- nalists. Stiles and the rest of the softball staff at Midwestern State were named South Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association. She also served as a member of MSU’s faculty during her tenure there acting as an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology. Stiles, a native of Thurmont, Md., played initially at the University of Vermont before transferring to University of Pittsburgh for her final three seasons. At both stops she earned conference academic honors from the American East and Big East while earning a B.A. in Communications and Political Science. She later earned a M.S. in Kinesiology/Sport Administration from Midwestern State University. ucgoldeneagles.com @ucwv_athletics CHARLESTON Softball Softball Decade

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 "If They Could Only Get Over The Idea That They Owned Us"12 A look at sports pages during the past year reveals that the seemingly endless argument between the owners of major league baseball teams and their players is once more taking attention away from the game on the field. At the heart of the trouble between players and management is the fact that baseball, by fiat of antitrust exemption, is a http://www.empire.net/~lewisec/Players_League_web2.html Page 1 of 7 Players' League-Chapter 2 7/19/2001 12:12 PM monopolistic, monopsonistic cartel, whose leaders want to operate in the style of Gilded Age magnates.13 This desire is easily understood, when one considers that the business of major league baseball assumed its current structure in the 1880's--the heart of the robber baron era. Professional baseball as we know it today began with the formation of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs in 1876. The National League (NL) was a departure from the professional organization which had existed previously: the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. The main difference between the leagues can be discerned by their full titles; where the National Association considered itself to be by and for the players, the NL was a league of ball club owners, to whom the players were only employees.
