3 Baseball

The 1981 baseball squad shows the potential for becoming a serious contender in this season•s league title race. According to Coach Dave Rowley, the team will be aiming for the top spot this season, after climbing three places in the standings and finishing only one game out of first last year. The team•s standings have improved steadily under Rowley•s guidance. Although the Hornets have not won a league baseball title since 1927, they will try to remedy the situation this year, fi'elding an experienced team with veteran players at every position. They have only lost one and one catcher from the 1980 starting team. At the forefront of this year•s anticipated Hornet success will be senior Britt Lewis, All-MIAA center fielder, who was 2nd in league hitting and leading team batsman and base stealer in 1980. Senior Kevin Kansman, 1979 All-MIAA right fielder, will return at full strength this year, after recovering from a knee injury which hampered him last season. Senior Tim Pobuda, 1980 All-MIAA second team catcher, provided 11 K11 with the most runs batted in and shared the most home runs with Kansman. Senior letterwinners also counted on to make strong contributions will be shortstop Tom Ranville, pitcher Scott Combs and infielder Mark Clyne. Other returning letterwinners who should figure heavily in K-College•s title quest include first baseman Fred Bleakley, second baseman Paul Dillon, pitcher/ Dave Lewis, pitcher Barry Owens, pitcher Mike Schork, third baseman Dennis Warkentien, infielder Jim Urban and infielder Mark Birtman. Leading a promising crop of freshmen will be catcher Jim Ham, who received All-State Honorable Mention during his high school career.

4 Other newcomers adding team depth will be infielder Rick Barber, pitcher Scott Cadieux, outfielder Paul Clancy, pitcher Nik Schork, infielder Chris Smorch and shortstop Mark Hill.

The 1981 men's tennis team will retain ten letterwinners from last season's squad, which placed third in the NCAA Division III National Championships and captured K-College•s 42nd consecutive league title. All-American Chris Burns, the 1980 NCAA Division III national singles champion, will be working hard to defend his title. Kevin Johnson, an all-conference player in his freshman year, will be returning as a junior to play for "K." A strong showing also can be expected from senior Bill Vanderhoef, who won the league #6 singles championship last year and took runner-up league honors for #3 doubles competition. Other strong competitors will be seniors Pete Ballantine and Dave Cafmeyer; juniors Steve Heidenreich, Mark Riley and Randy Jacobs; and sophomores Dave Higdon, Eric Trautmann and Chris Yates. This year's playing schedule is particularly tough for the Hornets, including contests with four Big Ten teams, three Mid American Conference teams, three Southeastern Conference teams and strong independents Notre Dame and Penn State. According to Coach George Acker, the primary goals for this season will be to defend the MIAA title and to qualify for the NCAA Championships, despite a youthful team and strong challengers.

10 Women~ Tennis

Last year's women's tennis team found itself rebuilding after the loss of four outstanding seniors from the 1979 MIAA championship squad which qualified for the AIAW National Championships. Nonetheless, Coach Tish Loveless expects the 1981 team to regain the traditional 11 K11 strength which has made the Hornets a power in women's tennis. Returning letterwinners will include the top six players from last season. Junior Janine Ihssen, who played #2 singles for K-College, was the Flight #2 State Champion, making it all the way to the singles finals at the regional AIAW Tournament before meeting defeat. Senior Cindy Chiappetta won the Flight #3 State Championship, while playing #3 singles for the Hornets. This year's captain will be senior Joan Thomson, Kalamazoo's #4 singles player, who took the runner-up honors in Flight #4 at the State Championships. Rounding out the veteran squad will be junior Tracy Berg, #1 singles player; sophomore Fran Bruder, #5 singles player; and senior Cindy Ackerman, #6 singles player. Coach Loveless also expects strong play from two transfer students. Sophomore Nancy Iannelli played #2 on Hope College's league and state championship team last year. Sophomore Catherine "Cit" Gaskin, from Kenyon College also will lend her experience to the "K" team. Although untested in collegiate tennis competition, Coach Loveless anticipates solid contributions from the new freshwomen.

13 Women~ Track

The 1981 Kalamazoo College women•s track team will field one of its most experienced squads in recent years. Coach Terri Beattie expects good performances from the five returning letterwinners, including seniors Sue Gordon, Anne Lehker and Cheryl Stout; and sophomores Beth King and Karen Sarpolis. These veterans anchored a team which broke 50% of the "K" school records, despite a less than satisfying league record, and which finally achieved enough depth to field entries in every event at the meets. King broke the school records in the 800 meter and the 880 yard . Records fell to Sarpolis in the 1500 meter and the 3000 meter run. Stout, 1980 team captain, toppled previous marks as a member of the 400 meter relay and the 1600 meter relay teams. Coach Beattie comments, "Our freshwomen have a variety of solid track backgrounds from high school, so we hope to further last year•s record-breaking season and to continue to improve upon a good program."
