According to Coach Dave Rowley, the team will be aiming for the top spot this season, after climbing three places in the standings and finishing only one game out of first last year. The team•s standings have improved steadily under Rowley•s guidance. Although the Hornets have not won a league baseball title since 1927, they will try to remedy the situation this year, fi'elding an experienced team with veteran players at every position. They have only lost one pitcher and one catcher from the 1980 starting team. At the forefront of this year•s anticipated Hornet success will be senior Britt Lewis, All-MIAA center fielder, who was 2nd in league hitting and leading team batsman and base stealer in 1980. Senior Kevin Kansman, 1979 All-MIAA right fielder, will return at full strength this year, after recovering from a knee injury which hampered him last season. Senior Tim Pobuda, 1980 All-MIAA second team catcher, provided 11 K11 with the most runs batted in and shared the most home runs with Kansman. Senior letterwinners also counted on to make strong contributions will be shortstop Tom Ranville, pitcher Scott Combs and infielder Mark Clyne. Other returning letterwinners who should figure heavily in K-College•s title quest include first baseman Fred Bleakley, second baseman Paul Dillon, pitcher/left fielder Dave Lewis, pitcher Barry Owens, pitcher Mike Schork, third baseman Dennis Warkentien, infielder Jim Urban and infielder Mark Birtman. Leading a promising crop of freshmen will be catcher Jim Ham, who received All-State Honorable Mention during his high school career. 4 Other newcomers adding team depth will be infielder Rick Barber, pitcher Scott Cadieux, outfielder Paul Clancy, pitcher Nik Schork, infielder Chris Smorch and shortstop Mark Hill. 1981 BASEBALL SCHEDULE Spring Trip Mar. 22 Binmingham Southern College 1:00 p.m. Mar. 23 Birmingham Southern College 1:00 p.m. Mar. 25 Spring Hill College 1:00 p.m. Mar. 26 University of South Alabama 6:00 p.m. Mar. 27 University of South Alabama 7:00 p.m. Mar. 28 Huntingdon College 1 :00 p.m. Mar. 29 Huntingdon College Regular Season Apr. 10 @ Aquinas 1 :30 p.m. Apr. 15 ALBION 1 :00 p.m. Apr. 18 @ Hope 1:00 p.m. Apr. 22 OLIVET 1 :00 p.m. Apr. 25 @ Adrian 1:00 p.m. Apr. 29 HILLSDALE 1:00 p.m. May 2 ALMA 1:00 p.m. May 5 SPRING ARBOR 1 :00 p.m. May 9 @ Calvin 1:00 p.m. May 17 @ Aquinas Tourney 1:00 p.m. All games are doubleheaders. 5 THE 1980 BASEBALL RECORD MIAA Conference - Won: 7 Lost: 5 (3rd place) Overall Record - Won: 8 Lost: 11 COACHING STAFF Head Coach: Dave Rowley This will be Dave Rowley's third season as head coach for the Hornet sluggers.
