Biran Wilde Blue Plaque Programme
When Aldridge left Last of the Summer Wine in 1990, Wilde returned as Foggy, TAMESIDE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH COUNCIL reuniting the series’ most popular and recognisable line-up. Whilst preparing for filming the 1997 series, Wilde began suffering from a mild infection and stood down for the first five episodes in case his illness worsened. His temporary absence was A TRIBUTE TO BRIAN WILDE covered by Frank Thornton, whom Wilde himself suggested as a replacement, and who would continue, as it transpired, as the ‘third man’. In all, Brian appeared in more than 100 episodes of the series. Other Works During his break from Last of the Summer Wine in the mid 1980s, Brian created a new television role, as Major Wyatt in Wyatt’s Watchdogs. Wilde played a retired army major who forms a neighbourhood watch group populated with local busy bodies. ‘‘Wyatt’s just a pompous old fool’’, Brian said of the part. ‘‘It required very little effort for me to play him because there’s plenty of him in me. Ask my wife and children’’. The programme, which co-starred Trevor Bannister, was written by Miles Tredinnick and ran for six episodes in 1988. He also played radio station boss Roland Simpson in the first series of ITV comedy The Kit Curran Radio Show (1984) starring Denis Lawson. Brian was a subtle and delicate actor and those whom he worked alongside found him to be a charming and quirky character. He was not one to court publicity and generally avoided interviews, much preferring to spend his time gardening or meeting friends in his favourite country pub.

The Scarman Lecture Series The University of Leicester WHAT’S PRISON REALLY LIKE? Nick Hardwick CBE HM Chief Inspector of Prisons 13 December 2012 The Prime Minister said he wants prison to be part of a ‘Tough but Intelligent’ justice system. Chris Grayling, the new Justice Secretary, wants to accelerate the ‘Rehabilitation Revolution’ his predecessor, Ken Clarke, started. For some prisons are a holiday camp where prisoners idle their days away in luxury. For others they are brutal and degrading, little changed since Victorian times. So what is the truth? How ‘tough’ are prisons now and how ‘intelligent’ are they? This lecture will use the finding of the independent inspection system to compare some of the myths about prison with the realities and examine how prisons are coping with the demand to deliver improved outcomes at a time of rising populations and reducing budgets. It will show that while progress has been made in some areas, there are signs that basic standards of safety and decency are being compromised. [SLIDE 1] Good afternoon. It is a real pleasure to be here this today and a particular privilege to be speaking as part of the Scarman Lecture Series. Lord Scarman was one of the 20th century’s most eminent jurists and his most lasting legacy was his report into the 1981 Brixton Riots. His report was seminal. It stands up there with Beveridge, Wolfenden and MacPherson, as one of the inquiries and reports that changed how we see the world around us. The report was not just ground breaking in its conclusions – but groundbreaking in the way the Lord Scarman went about producing it – going 1 out into the communities involved and listening to the people affected.
