FIRM PROFILE REX is an internationally acclaimed architecture and design firm based in New York City, whose name signifies a re- appraisal (RE) of architecture (X). Operating across many scales, REX consistently challenges and advances building typologies, and promotes the agency of architecture. We are a diverse think-tank of 30 carefully selected professionals, each trained in design, management, and technical issues. All projects are led by Joshua Ramus, Founder and Principal, who builds a direct and barrier-free relationship with each of REX’s clients. Our size is strategic: we select our projects carefully and limit our workload to only that which the team—and Joshua in particular—can be fully dedicated through the project’s entire duration. We are proud that half of our Leadership Team is comprised of women, with the same ratio maintained within our design staff. Seminal projects include the AT&T Performing Arts Center Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas; the Vakko Fashion Center & Power Media Headquarters in Istanbul; and the Seattle Central Library—all opened to critical acclaim. Joshua led the last project—hailed by Herbert Muschamp in The New York Times as “the most exciting new building it has been my honor to review in more than 30 years of writing about architecture”—while Founding Partner of OMA New York, the firm he rebranded as REX in 2006. Ongoing projects include: • Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, NYC (construction commenced) • Brown University Performing Arts Center, Providence (site mobilization commenced) • Mercedes-Benz Future Lab & Museum, Stuttgart (Design Development completed) • PERTH+, 60-story mixed-used skyscraper, Western Australia (Design Development commenced) • 2050 M Street, office building hosting CBS’s Washington, DC Bureau (construction commenced) • Necklace Residence, Long Island (site mobilization commenced) In the fall of 2017, REX completed the transformation of Five Manhattan West, the recladding and interior renovation of a 1,700,000 sf exemplar of late-Brutalism straddling Penn Station’s rail yard in New York City. REX’s work has been recognized with the profession’s top accolades, including two AIA National Honor Awards, a U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology National Honor Award, an American Library Association National Building Award, two American Council of Engineering Companies’ National Gold Awards, Time magazine’s Building of the Year, and numerous AIA New York, ArchDaily, Architect/Progressive Architecture, Architect’s Newspaper, Architectural Review/MIPIM, Architizer, and Wallpaper* design awards. In 2017, REX was named one of the World’s Top 10 Innovative Companies in Architecture by Fast Company for the second time. Joshua was the 2016 recipient of the Marcus Prize, bestowed upon architects “on a trajectory to greatness.” He has also been credited as one of the “5 greatest architects under 50” by The Huffington Post, one of the world’s most influential young architects by Wallpaper*, one of the twenty most influential players in design by Fast Company, listed among “The 20 Essential Young Architects” by ICON magazine, and featured as one of the “Best and Brightest” by Esquire. Joshua has been the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University and the Cullinan Visiting Professor at Rice University, and a visiting professor at Columbia University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Syracuse University. An early member of the TED Brain Trust, Joshua shared REX’s design methodologies at the TED2006 and TEDxSMU conferences, and lectures frequently at universities, cultural institutions, and symposia around the world. Joshua holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University, where he earned the inaugural Araldo Cossutta Fellowship and the SOM Fellowship, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, magna cum laude with distinction in the major, from Yale University. .
