THE The Wadsworth Company Newsletter 2019 Edition NEWSLETTER Page 1 Friends and Colleagues— This past year has certainly been a memorable year for the Wadsworth Company. An uptick in both large and small golf course renovation projects has led to one of the busiest years we have seen in a long time. Our projects included classic restorations, major renovations, new course development and irrigation up- grades that spanned the United States from coast to coast. The consistent battering of tropical storms and hurricanes created some challenges for not only our projects but the people that live in those areas. Our hearts and prayers continue to go out to the thousands of people impacted by the storms. We were pleased to have been the recipient of several awards in 2018 for recently completed projects. Three projects received the ASGCA Design Excellence Award for our work with Greg Martin, Forrest Richardson and Rick Jacobson, all ASGCA members. Congratulations to everyone that worked so hard to make each of these projects a success! The year also brought about the loss of someone that meant so much to everyone here at the Wadsworth Company. Our founder and mentor, Brent Wadsworth, passed away in February at the age of 88, having lived a very full life with his wife Jean and four children Stan, Leslie, Martha and Eric. We at the Wadsworth Com- pany continue to grieve the loss of our founder and will do our best to carry on the vision and fortitude of building great golf courses and relationships. The following newsletter includes a list of highlighted projects that we are currently working on or have recently completed. Do not hesitate to contact any of us should you have any questions or would like addi- tional information about the projects. This golf course was originally built by our company and exe- cuted by a young Tom Shapland back in 1975. Led by Richard Mandell, ASGCA, this endeavor boasted new tees sodded with Royal Zoysia, new bunkers with the Better Billy Bunker system and G-Angle bunker sand and greens sodded with Diamond Zoysia. The driving range and practice facilities were also updated and are already open for play. Despite the record rainfall in April and May, Keowee Key is going into winter almost completely grown-in and on pace for a summer re-opening. Keowee Key—Hole #5 Continual rain interruptions on a complete re-grassing of a valley golf course in red clay is an absolute recipe for disaster…. Wadsworth continued to do what was needed to get the project grassed and ensure their client was happy. - Richard Mandell, ASGCA Keowee Key—Hole # 11 Willowcreek and Willowbrook Golf Courses—Sun City, Arizona Willowcreek and Willowbrook Golf Courses are part of the Recreation Cen- ters of Sun City (RCSC), one of the largest active adult communities in the United States. Wadsworth Golf was selected to complete our 4th project for RCSC under the direction of golf course architect Gary Brawley, ASGCA and irrigation consultant Marvin Mills. The project included rebuilding the greens on the Willowcreek course to USGA standards while a new Toro satellite irrigation system was installed on both courses. The landscaping around the golf course was also upgraded with decomposed granite and many varieties of native plantings. The irriga- tion system install was the largest system ever installed by the Wadsworth Company and included 55 miles of piping! www.wadsworthgolf.com THE RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS PAGE 3 Bobby Jones Golf Course—Atlanta, Georgia The ‘renovation’ of the Bobby Jones Golf Course is that of historical significance. The transformation of this original 18-hole John Van Kleek design into a reversible 9-hole course that can also play as a 7,400 yard 18-hole course was originally designed by Bob Cupp. After his passing, his son Bobby Cupp Jr. ad- ministered the design for the Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation. The golf course includes a state of the art practice facility and the new Georgia Golf House, that will accommodate Georgia State University Men’s and Women’s golf teams, the Georgia State Golf Association and the Georgia Section of the PGA of America. The Masterplan as developed by Bruce Charlton, ASGCA, of RTJ II and executed by local architect Richard Mandell, ASGCA, was to renovate the bunkers utilizing Better Billy Bunker to reflect the classic original Jones style while using new dramatic white sand. The greens were also brought back closer to the original shapes and re-grassed with Champion Ultradwarf Bermu- dagrass. In addition, many original golf corridors were restored with select clearing, new drainage was installed for added strategy around green complexes and some cart path and irrigation updates were implemented. The $2.4 mil- lion renovation finished on-time and within budget. For more information on this finished product, please visit HERE. Tanglewood Park—Hole #12 Tanglewood Park—Hole #16 Echo Valley Country Club—Norwalk, Iowa ASGCA Past President Rick Robbins and Wadsworth Golf completed a greens renovation on The Vale Nine at Echo Valley Country Club. Echo Valley is a 27-hole layout that was built as an 18-hole course in the early 1960’s. In 2004, Robbins Golf Design and Wadsworth Golf completed the addition of the third 9 holes. The recent renovation included the removal of the top 4” of existing mix and replacement with new mix while duplicating the original green’s contours. Lost green area was recaptured during the project. In addition to resurfacing the Vale greens, a new 21,000 sq. ft. putting green, 3 chipping greens and a short game practice center were built. “Our work with Wadsworth at Echo Valley has been a great experience — very professional! The most recent phase of the work was a tight time table with poor weather conditions and it was handled with great success. - Rick Robbins, ASGCA Precision greens coring with minimal impact www.wadsworthgolf.com THE RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS PAGE 5 Indian Canyon Golf Course—Spokane, Washington Indian Canyon is one of four golf courses owned and operated by the City of Spokane. Wadsworth Golf was awarded the contract to complete the installation of a new 18-hole Brian Keighin designed irrigation system. Originally designed by Chandler Egan, the previous irrigation system consisted of a steel pipe and quick coupler system that was leaking substantially. The $2.1 million new system is expected to reduce water use by 30%, saving over 16M gallons of water per year. The new system utilizes HDPE pipe with a Rain Bird Integrated Control (IC) system. “The work looks great! The finished product looks fantastic and the crew is doing a great job!” - Brian Keighin WATCH VIDEO of the precision work being completed!
