NYC Cooling Centers If you do not have air conditioning, NYC provides cooling centers where you can go to cool off. The nearest ones in Murray Hill and surrounding areas are the New York Public Library branches: Main Branch - Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue at 41st Street, Science, Industry & Business Library on Madison Avenue between 34th & 35th Street, Kips Bay Branch at 31st Street and 3rd Avenue, and Grand Central Branch on 46th Street between Lexington & 3rd Avenue. National Night Out Against Crime is an annual summer event in which police precincts nationwide organize community festivals with the participation of local business and civic National Night organizations. Streets are closed to vehicle traffic (starting at 6am) and are open to the public to play, run, walk and bike. There are performances and activities at rest stops Summer Streets along the route. The two closest rest stops to Murray Hill are The Midtown rest stop (25th Street and Park Ave) themed “City Picnic: Food Glorious Food,” a food and beverage sampling area. The Uptown rest stop (51st St and Park Ave) is the Children’s Corner. September 12 12 – 8pm What's New What's Next 2019 Save the date for the design industry's most aniticipated event! nydc.com at New York Design Center 200 Lexington Avenue September 16 Application deadline Volunteer Opportunity: Help Families and Individuals Get Back on Their Feet The Advocacy, Counseling and Entitlement Services (ACES) Project of the Community Service Society is recruiting retired individuals age 55 years or older to serve as volunteer public benefit counselors dedicated to helping financially disadvantaged people. ACES volunteers assist clients with completing applications for public Help Families & benefits and help correct benefit related problems. Volunteers must Individuals Get attend a training that begins October 1, 2019. Upon completion, they are placed in agencies in one of the five boroughs to provide Back on Their information on government benefits to low-income families, older Feet adults, and individuals with disabilities. A personal interview, successful completion of the training, and a commitment of six hours per week for one year of volunteer service is required. Applicants must have advocacy, research, and computer skills, in addition to an interest in assisting low-income populations and learning about public benefit programs. No prior benefit experience is required. Your participation in this program gives you a chance to help others in a truly significant way. Learn about the many landmark buildings in Murray Hill, including the Union League Club, The Morgan Library, the Polish Consulate and others. The tour also features information about the well-known architects who designed them and the famous people who once called this neighborhood home, including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan and others. Find out how Mary Murray distracted the British General Howe to allow the American army to escape during the American Revolution. Knowledgeable tour guides will focus on the unique architectural qualities of the buildings as well as the historic evolution of the neighborhood and its preservation as a residential oasis in Midtown Manhattan.
