The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power
The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power: Bridging Songs with Literary Texts to Enhance Students’ Interpretative Skills Elroy Alister Esdaille Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Elroy Alister Esdaille All Rights Reserved Abstract Sometimes students struggle to interpret literary texts because some of these texts do not lend themselves to the deduction of the interpretative processes with which they are familiar, but the same is not true when students pull interpretations from songs. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations. -

Gary Clark, Jr
GARY CLARK, JR. 21st Century Blues The last two years have yielded a dizzying RISING FROM AUSTIN parade of triumphs for Gary Clark, Jr., the 28-year-old artist from Austin, Texas. With the by Tom Hyslop force of Warner Brothers Records behind him, Clark has received a promotional push that rivals that of any mainstream artist, one that certainly exceeds anything witnessed in the blues realm at least since the 1980s, with the mainstream breakouts of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray, and possibly since the highly-publicized signing of Johnny Winter by Columbia Records in 1969. In the course of the blitz, Clark has performed at every major festival, including Coachella, SXSW, Made In America, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Lollapalooza, Dave Mathews Band Caravan, Newport Folk Fest, Electric Forest, Sasquatch! Festival, Mountain Jam, and others, along with dates in the most coveted clubs; received ink in a dizzying variety of publications, from MOJO and SPIN to such unexpected settings as Esquire, Vanity Fair, and even the mainstream Entertainment Weekly, with recurring coverage in Rolling Stone, including a five- star rating for his debut EP on Warners, in a write-up that led off the review section; and made appearances on the major late-night shows: Conan, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He has taped an episode of Austin City Limits as headliner. A fragment of “Bright Lights” provided the soundtrack to a major mobile phone provider’s ubiquitous TV advertisement, and the video for “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round” received regular rotation on VH1, America’s almost univer- sally available cable music television channel. -
Biu Withers by Rob Bowman He Was the Leading Figure in the Nascent Black Singer-Songwriter Movement of the Early 1970S
PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless. -

LOCAL Album Charts DISC-laimer: Since many of the stores participating in this feature deal in vintage vinyl, these charts are not meant to be volume-based sales indicators (although there is some of that here). Rather, they are a mix of popular titles and best-sellers combined with unique and rare finds that have come through each store’s stacks over the last month. Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love
ACT LIKE A Lady, THINK LIKE A MAN Steve Harvey * WHAT MEN REALLY THINK A'BOUT LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, INTIMACY, AND COMMITMENT I 've made a living for more than twenty years making people laugh about themselves, about each other, about family, and friends, and, most certainly, about love, sex, and relationships. My humor is always rooted in truth and full of wisdom the kind that comes from living, watching, learning, and knowing. I'm told my jokes strike chords with people be cause they can relate to them, especially the ones that explore the dynamics of relationships between men and women. It never ceases to amaze me how much people talk about relationships, think about them, read about them, ask about them even get in them without a clue how to move them forward. For sure, if there's anything I've discovered during my journey here on God's earth, it's this: (a) too many women are clueless about men, (b) men get away with a whole lot of stuff in relationships because women have never understood how men think, and (c) I've got some valuable information to change all of that. I discovered this when my career transitioned to radio with the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Back when my show was based in Los Angeles, I created a segment called Ask Steve, during which women could call in and ask anything they wanted to about relationships. Anything. At the very least, I thought Ask Steve would lead to some good comedy, and at .rst, that's pretty much what it was all about for me getting to the jokes.
