GENERAL ELECTION IN GREECE 7th July 2019 European New Democracy is the favourite in the Elections monitor Greek general election of 7th July Corinne Deloy On 26th May, just a few hours after the announcement of the results of the European, regional and local elections held in Greece, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (Coalition of the Radical Left, SYRIZA), whose party came second to the main opposition party, New Analysis Democracy (ND), declared: “I cannot ignore this result. It is for the people to decide and I am therefore going to request the organisation of an early general election”. Organisation of an early general election (3 months’ early) surprised some observers of Greek political life who thought that the head of government would call on compatriots to vote as late as possible to allow the country’s position to improve as much as possible. New Democracy won in the European elections with 33.12% of the vote, ahead of SYRIZA, with 23.76%. The Movement for Change (Kinima allagis, KINAL), the left-wing opposition party which includes the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), the Social Democrats Movement (KIDISO), the River (To Potami) and the Democratic Left (DIMAR), collected 7.72% of the vote and the Greek Communist Party (KKE), 5.35%. Alexis Tsipras had made these elections a referendum Costas Bakoyannis (ND), the new mayor of Athens, on the action of his government. “We are not voting belongs to a political dynasty: he is the son of Dora for a new government, but it is clear that this vote is Bakoyannis, former Minister of Culture (1992-1993) not without consequence.

In all regards, the fact that the painting is being criticized only shows that there is no true way to please everybody – be it in art or politics. - Author of this paper. 1 Summary Eimantas Kocanas ‘Euroscepticism in political parties of Greece’, Master’s Thesis. Paper supervisor Prof. Doc. Mindaugas Jurkynas, Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University, Department of Diplomacy and Political Sciences. Faculty of Political Sciences. Euroscepticism (anti-EUism) had become a subject of analysis in contemporary European studies due to its effect on governments, parties and nations. With Greece being one of the nations in the center of attention on effects of Euroscepticism, it’s imperative to constantly analyze and research the eurosceptic elements residing within the political elements of this nation. Analyzing eurosceptic elements within Greek political parties, the goal is to: detect, analyze and evaluate the expressions of Euroscepticism in political parties of Greece. To achieve this: 1). Conceptualization of Euroscepticism is described; 2). Methods of its detection and measurement are described; 3). Methods of Euroscepticism analysis are applied to political parties of Greece in order to conclude what type and expressions of eurosceptic behavior are present. • Segmentation Based on Personality Traits
Segmentation based on personality traits: An online cross-sectional study in Greece Name: Alexandra Pantavou Student Number: 11351519 Contact information: [email protected] Academic Institute: University of Amsterdam and Graduate School of Communication Study Program: Master’s Program Communication Science Supervisor: Dr. M. Marjolein Moorman Course: Master’s Thesis Date of completion: January 31, 2018 Word Count: 5943 Segmentation based on personality traits 1 As political marketing collaborates with political psychology, personality traits become increasingly interesting to study in the field of political behavior. The integration of psychometric targeting in the political marketing routines of the “Brexit” and Trump’s U.S. presidential election campaigns, sparked the inspiration of this study’s topic. The thesis explores the relationship between personality and political behavior and tries to answer the question of what is the effectiveness of using psychometric traits as a segmentation method in political campaigns. In order to study this relationship, I conducted an online survey on a sample of 726 students living in Athens, Greece and studied how the five-factor model of personality, vote choice and political ideology associate with each other. Results suggest that certain traits predict political ideology -Intellect and agreeableness correlate with left- wing ideologies and conscientiousness and extraversion correlate with right-wing ideologies- but the traits account only for a small percentage of the variance explain in the variable (6.1%). This indicates that personality, at least for the Greek example, is not the most effective predictor of political behavior, and voter segmentation based only on personality would probably not be efficient enough on its own.

GENERAL ELECTIONS IN GREECE 6th May 2012 European Elections monitor Great Uncertainty just one Month before the next Greek General Elections Corinne Deloy (with Stellina Galitopoulou) On 31st October last Prime Minister George Papandreou (Panhellenic Socialist Movement, PASOK) announced the organisation of a referendum on the rescue plan for Greece approved by the Euro- Analysis pean Union on 27th October in Brussels. The latter aimed to help Greece pay off its debts but obliged 1 month before the country to submit to economic supervision and to implement a stricter austerity regime. The the poll announcement was the source of stupor and indignation in Greece and across all of Europe – it sent the European, American and Asian stock exchanges into disarray and surprised the financial markets. “It’s suicide”, declared Michalis Matsourakis, chief economist at the Greek Alpha Bank, who perceived an attempt on the part of George Papandreou to break out of his solitude and the political crisis that was undermining the country as he pushed the opposition parties, which until now had categorically refused to support the strict austerity measures taken by the government, to adopt a position on the European plan, in order to calm the social protest movement that went together with a sharp decline in living standards. The Prime Minister, who was finding it increasingly difficult to find support within his own socialist party and the ministers of his government, had already suggested to the opposition that they create an alliance in the shape of a government coalition in June 2011. The right however, rejected this proposal.

  • After a Decade of Crisis, Greek Politics Are Turning Normal and More Technocratic
The Washington Post Monkey Cage Analysis After a decade of crisis, Greek politics are turning normal and more technocratic The election seems to have consolidated competition. By Harris Mylonas July 14 Greek voters just elected the first government in which a single party won a parliamentary majority since the economic crisis began in 2010. On July 7, a little fewer than 6 million people voted in more than 21,000 polling stations to elect the 300 members of the Greek parliament and install a new government. Twenty parties ran; only six of them got more than 3 percent of the vote, which is the threshold required to place a member in parliament. Here’s what happened So, who won? It was New Democracy’s leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the son of former prime minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis, who served from 1990 to 1993, and the brother of former New Democracy minister and former mayor of Athens Dora Bakoyanni. Mitsotakis managed to bring the party back to power after a difficult decade, with an impressive 39.85 percent of the vote and 158 seats in a 300-member parliament. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, leader of the leftist Syriza party, lost, but he managed to keep his party’s vote share above 31.53 percent. As a result, New Democracy got a smaller lead than it had in last month’s European Union parliament elections, contrary to expectations. This result fortified his place at the helm of the main opposition party. Together, the two top parties received more than 70 percent of the vote.

[email protected] Szerkesztésért felelős személy: Chen Xin Kiadásért felelős személy: Huang Ping china-cee.eu Polarized Greece concerned about developments in Italy Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is carefully monitoring the actions of the new Italian government. A potential harmonious cooperation between Rome and Brussels will pave the way for a ‘clean exit’ of Greece from the memorandum of understanding. In such a case, an early election after the summer is likely as Tsipras will be able present himself as the premier who managed to give an end to the bailout period. Irrespective of his final decision on the date of the election, Greek politics are continuously being marked by polarization and the lack of political parties to find consensus and cooperated in spite of existing themes of national interest. New election scenarios and the future of Europe In May and June 2018 the possibility of an early election is dominating the political agenda in Greece. For example, the leader of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the one of the Movement for Change (formerly PASOK) Fofi Gennimata are regularly asking for it. Some media are also speculating for election dates in the autumn. For his part, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is continuously ruling out such a possibility. In a parliamentary discussion, which took place on 22 May he said a snap election would jeopardize the country’s exit from the third bailout.
