THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS THE ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF COMPETITIVE BALANCE IN THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DETERMINANTS OF LOCAL DEMAND PATRICK J KEMP SPRING 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Dr. Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor Dr. David Shapiro Professor of Economics and Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College i Abstract In the study of sports economics the notion of competitive balance is well known. This thesis seeks to expand upon this well known notion and use it as part of an empirical analysis of the determinants of local demand for NBA franchises. This paper starts by focusing on the traditional notion of competitive balance, with specific regard to the sport basketball and the National Basketball Association specifically. It then quantifies the degree of competitive balance in the NBA since 1990 using metrics similar to those used by Quirk and Fort in their 1992 book Pay Dirt: The Business of Professional Team Sports. An extensive amount of linear regression analysis is then conducted, first looking at all teams and then teams belonging to certain market types. The empirical results indicate that competitive balance is not a significant determinant of local demand. The results also indicate key differences in the determinants between low-income market teams and high-income market teams. I make two recommendations as to how the NBA could beneficially alter its business model based upon these regression results: abolishing guaranteed contracts and changing the 100/0 home/away gate split.

Year: 2020 ISBN: 9789403609942 Cover design: Lucien de Groot - Great Match Publication porttal: meinbestseller.de !2 Reaching the National Basketball Association has long been a goal for millions of Americans growing up playing the game across the United States. But the influence of the NBA has spread throughout the globe, and youngsters from everywhere now dream of making it to “The League”. Those kids from places across the world see more and more non- Americans playing in the NBA, and the NBA franchises are recognizing that those prospects also offer something that their American brethren might not. And the clubs have been taking chances on international players. There are dozens of international players who have declared for the 2020 NBA Draft or are automatically eligible - those who were born in 1998. Most of those talents have been scouted for years by NBA personnel traveling the world for both club competitions and national team events - both at the youth and senior levels. Each time an international scout, team scouting director or general manager sees a player they take notes - mental and/or written - on what they see in the prospect. The talent observers then stash those notes away until the next time they see the same player, looking to see how he has developed.

  • Using the G League As the Nba's Key Tointernational Expansion
A MUCH NEEDED TRAVEL CALL: USING THE G LEAGUE AS THE NBA’S KEY TO INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION Allison Slusher* INTRODUCTION Larry Bird once said, “Once you are labeled the best you want to stay up there, and you can’t do it by loafing around. If I don’t keep changing, I’m history.”1 Although Larry Bird’s words were directed toward himself and his career as a forward in the National Basketball Association, his words ring true for the NBA as a whole. The NBA is arguably the most profitable and popular professional basketball league in the world, but as the NBA’s success and popularity continue to rise, if it doesn’t keep progressing, it’s future as one of the best leagues in the world is not secure.2 The time is ripe for the NBA to make changes. The NCAA cannot provide a place for all its athletes who want to make money now; therefore, the NBA should take advantage of the NCAA’s rules as they are. The NBA itself, in order to avoid stagnation, needs to expand and grow. The key to expansion and becoming the hero to both players and fans in an arguably tragic tale of collegiate athletics lies in an existing component of the NBA: minor league basketball. The NBA is known primarily for its 30 professional teams; however, the organization also operates the G League, the NBA’s official minor league.3 The G League is designed to give players, * You should write an about the author section here.

Analiza poročanja o košarkarski ligi ABA v treh slovenskih tiskanih medijih Novinarji so v sodobni družbi eni ključnih oblikovalcev družbenega dogajanja in zavedanja, vendar pri svojem delu nikoli niso le prenašalci informacij, saj je njihov izbor informacij zaznamovan z lastnimi izkušnjami, kulturo, v kateri živijo, in odnosi, v katere vsakodnevno vstopajo.

  • Does the Wheel Come Full Circle in Former Yugoslavia?
Südosteuropa 59 (2011), H . 3, S . 286-300 DEFRAGMENTING YUGOSLAVIA IRENA RISTIć Rapprochement as a Paradigm Shift: Does the Wheel Come Full Circle in Former Yugoslavia? Abstract. Not only did Yugoslavia dissolve in an extremely violent way, its dissolution was accompanied by the emergence of a discourse that constructed the Yugoslav space as an artificial one . This discourse described Yugoslavia as a state that was created and led in a top-down fashion by undemocratic political elites .As a consequence, this discourse suggests, the people who lived in the Yugoslav state did not really want it . However, twenty years after the beginning of the break-up, and ten years after the end of the last military conflicts, we observe processes that indicate a new emergence of the space encompassing the territory of the former Yugoslavia . These processes are unique insofar as they have not been initiated by the political elites, but are being carried out – possibly for the first time since the end of the 19th century – from the bottom up . What is more, they are driven by the forces of profit and competitiveness . This article presents examples of these bottom-up processes to illustrate that, despite the traumatic experience of the fragmentation of Yugoslavia, people in the Yugoslav space have started to link once again . This rapprochment has neither been carried by a strong ideology nor pushed by an authoritarian state . Instead, it is based in a sense of a common culture, language, memory, and last but not least, shared expectations of potential economic profits . Irena Ristić is a research assistant at the Institute of Social Sciences in Belgrade and a PhD candidate in the History Department at the University of Regensburg .
