Johnson Jr. earned his first No.1 qualifier position of the year in his Mopar on Friday evening with a stellar elapsed time pass of 4.047 seconds at 319.35 mph. Johnson Jr. followed it up on Saturday with two nearly identical runs of 4.133 seconds/307.79 mph and 4.134 seconds/309.63 mph for the quickest run of the third session and second quickest of the fourth at New England Dragway and earned a total of 10 bonus points for his qualifying efforts. He will face Bob Tasca III in the first round. "The runs we made today were, in my opinion, more impressive than what we ran yesterday," said Johnson Jr., about the pass that earned him his 11th career pole position. "Last night, a lot of guys ran quick and we ran just a little quicker, but to go out there today and run (4.13 second) two consistent passes in a row in these hot conditions makes you confident in your car. I was happy last night, but I am thrilled today." After posting his third win of the season last weekend at the NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, New Jersey, Matt Hagan put his Rocky Boots Mopar Express Lane 2015 Dodge Charger R/T in the sixth spot with his best run of 4.070/318.24 under the Friday night lights. The Funny Car points leader will meet up with his DSR teammate and 11th seed Jack Beckman in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations. Last year’s winner at New England Dragway, Ron Capps, is second in the points behind Hagan with two wins this season and will start eliminations from the ninth place spot on the ladder with his 4.081/315.42 effort. He will have Alexis DeJoria as his first round opponent. Pro Stock winner of the inaugural NHRA New England Nationals and last week’s runner-up finisher in Englishtown, Allen Johnson is chasing his first win this season from the eight place spot on the eliminations ladder after a best lap of 6.563/212.26. Johnson’s Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Dodge Dart will face off against Larry Morgan in the first round. V. Gaines will start from the 13th spot after his Dodge Dart posted a 6.643/ 211.00 and will have Erica Enders as his first round opponent. The third HEMI-powered entry in this weeken’s competition is the Dodge Avenger of Alan Prusiensky who will start from the 14th spot in his fourth career Pro Stock start. He’ll see Jason Line in the opening round. Chris McGaha was the Pro Stock No.1 qualifier with a lap of 6.520/212.66. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing.

Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) driver Jack Beckman helped extend the Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car’s consecutive streak of No.1 qualifier positions to four this season with another record setting run, while his teammate Ron Capps, who has one of those pole positions along with two final round appearances so far this year, will miss racing on Sunday for the first time since 2013. Mopar Pro Stock driver Erica Enders saw her incredible round win streak at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway stopped at 23, but is hoping that Sunday will bring an end to the string of first round losses that have plagued her this season.

Obituary Peter Bartlett – BHRA pioneer We regret to report the death of Peter Bartlett, a UK hot rodding pioneer and founder member in 1960 of the British Hot Rod Association. He became BHRA treasurer in 1962 and two years later was owner/driver of the ‟57 “Shovin‟ Chevvy” that push-started some of the great American drivers such as “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, “TV Tommy” Ivo and Tony “The Loner” Nancy, when they came to the UK for the 1st British International Drag Festival.

That is a question that is brought up by an article that I have put in this month’s newsletter. For each of us, Mopar means something significant, yet different to all. Whether it’s a kids first Mopar being a used Dodge Neon, and loving front wheel drive cars from the 80s and 90s, or possibly a seasoned veteran that recalls the “good old days” where they grew up in the back seat of the ‘57 Fury, and loved cruising the boulevard in their ‘71 ‘Cuda, or it could possibly be a punk kid that grew up cruising a land yacht, and now looks at the modern V8s with awe and inspiration. For all of us Mopar fans, it makes no difference. Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Plymouth, AMC, De Soto, or any of the other great names that have had the Mopar brand under their hood, it’s all the same. We all have a love of the mechanical inanimate objects that we all become attached to, in one way or another.

The reason why it became the name is unknown. It might have started when racers motivated one another to drag their car out of their garage and race one another. In case, maximizing the revs, drivers may hold the car in gear longer, or drag through the gears. The reason behind the term quarter mile distance is as unknown as the term drag race. In 1951, to create order from chaos, an individual body known as the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) got created. It acts as a governing body for drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. Apart from that, the sanctioned body would also familiarize safety and performance standards in terms to legitimize the drag racing.

    CAPPS READY TO DEFEND AT GATORS DSR intent on rebounding from disappointing visit to Phoenix Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler have a couple important reasons to be eager to get to the next race. The NAPA team won the season-opener then was No. 1 qualifier two weeks ago near Phoenix and will arrive in Gainesville, Fla., atop the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series standings for the March 18-20 Gatornationals. A year ago, Capps and the NAPA team defeated John Hale in the championship round to earn his 45th Funny Car title and become the second winningest driver in the category. Two weeks ago on Feb. 27, Tobler and assistant Eric Lane tuned the NAPA Dodge to a track-record time of 3.925 seconds on its last qualifying run to earn the pole for the NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Motorsports Park never Phoenix. But that was the last highlight of the weekend for Don Schumacher Racing which failed to advance at least one team to a semifinal round since 2007, a span of over 216 events according to research by NHRA “National Dragster” reporter Brad Littlefield. Work to correct issues that plagued the seven-car team near Phoenix began the moment each returned to their pit and continued through on- track testing the following day for the Sandvik Coromant/Red Fuel and Matco dragsters, and the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Funny Car. After a two-day drive back to DSR headquarters in Brownsburg, Ind., little time elapsed before work resumed to prepare for the third event of the 24-race Mello Yello season.
