  • Capps, NAPA Start Celebration for 50 Years of Funny Cars with Win at Winternationals, Start Mello Yello Season on Fox
Ron Capps celebrates his Winternationals victory with his NAPA team and family: from left, dad John, wife Shelley, son Caden and mom Betty. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing.

Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) driver Jack Beckman helped extend the Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car’s consecutive streak of No.1 qualifier positions to four this season with another record setting run, while his teammate Ron Capps, who has one of those pole positions along with two final round appearances so far this year, will miss racing on Sunday for the first time since 2013. Mopar Pro Stock driver Erica Enders saw her incredible round win streak at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway stopped at 23, but is hoping that Sunday will bring an end to the string of first round losses that have plagued her this season.

(PHOTO: AutoImagery.com) COUNTDOWN IS ON Hagan, Magneti Marelli/Rocky Boots team leads DSR into playoff with Funny Car top seed, Massey ranks second in Top Fuel The seven Don Schumacher Racing teams will get a well-earned weekend off before leaving next week to start the seventh annual Countdown to the Championship on Sept.13 at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte Motor Speedway after the 18-event NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series concluded Monday. DSR’s teams are in solid positions to make runs at NHRA world championships and $500,000 bonuses that go along with the titles. • Topeka Sweep for Mopar
TOPEKA SWEEP FOR MOPAR The NHRA Kansas Nationals last weekend was one for the history books in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and one Matt Hagan and crew chief Dickie Venables will not soon forget. After setting the national elapsed time and speed records on Friday night at Heartland Park Topeka with a 3.862- second pass at 335.57 mph, the fastest a Funny Car has ever traveled in 1,000 feet or a quarter-mile, the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots team led by Venables and assistant Michael Knudsen took the event title on Sunday afternoon to earn an NHRA Wally trophy for the second straight weekend and jump from ninth to fourth in the Mello Yello standings. Under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s, NHRA fans tuning in live on Fox Sports 1 were treated to a wild pedalfest in Sundays’ final round between Hagan and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman, who Hagan also beat in last weekend’s final round in the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Hagan pedaled his 10,000- horsepower Dodge Charger R/T at least half a dozen times before crossing the finish line to earn his 20th career event title and first at Heartland Park Topeka. “It was wild,” Hagan said of the final round. “It’s important to put everything in perspective. We set world records for E.T and speed, and then to come back out here to win this race is a tribute to my guys and their hard work. My butt was puckered pretty good on that last run.

  • DSR's 2012 Traxxas Nitro Shootout Drivers
The latest news on NHRA Drag Racing’s Super Team DON SCHUMACHER RACING FRIDAY, SEPT. 21, 2012 BROWNSBURG, IND. Shootout adds to big Texas weekend for Capps; ‘Sarge’ not ready to surrender Top Fuel lead ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 21, 2012) – There are concrete reasons why this weekend’s NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event could be the best ever at the Texas Motorplex outside of Dallas. At least we hope it will be for Don Schumacher Racing, which is living up to its moniker as the “biggest and baddest team” in drag racing. Heading to the ’Plex, the first all- concrete dragstrip, DSR is first in Top Fuel with the U.S. Army’s Tony Schumacher and first in Funny Car with NAPA AUTO PARTS’ Ron Capps in a Dodge Charger R/T after last weekend’s opening round of the Countdown to the Championship. The priority for the top-10 drivers in both nitro categories of the Countdown is going rounds and winning titles. But there will be $100,000 up for grabs among eight Funny Car drivers, including three from DSR. The inaugural Traxxas Nitro Shootout will be Saturday concurrently with qualifying that day and the Shootout champ will earn a $100,000 bonus for his team. Capps – the top seed – and DSR teammate Jack Beckman and Johnny Gray want to match the feat of teammate Spencer Massey, who won the Top Fuel version of the Shootout three weeks ago during the U.S. Nationals near Indianapolis. DSR’s 2012 Traxxas Nitro Shootout drivers F/C No.
