For ferry times contact 086 8515003/087 9004115 The doughnut effect A recent analysis of this area revealed that 10% of homes on Clare Island and Inishturk are holiday homes whilst the number on the stretch of road leading down to Roonah Pier is well above the 10%. It is closer to 50%. These holiday homes are a mixture of purpose-built and inherited family homes. The resident population on the streets of Louisburgh has dropped in the last twenty years, whilst the immediate surrounds have been increased as families move into the available housing. This is the doughnut effect: hole in the middle and full all around. Whilst it is wonderful that there is a doughnut, the streets are in need of some jam and cream. It is uplifting to see the newly painted red and green colours on the building beside the Gala, and to know that there is a new business about to open there in the next few weeks. It is heart-warming to watch (and participate in) the renovation of two other buildings for the HQ, another place for people to stop into and pass the time of day. Energy exists, buildings are there, people have ideas. In Berlin, the empty buildings are used on a Pop-Up basis: for a six-week period to try out an idea and then they close/start over. In Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin the Council have adopted and adapted this form of business as it is ideal for the recessionary times. Perhaps there is room in Louisburgh for a similar attitude? Time will tell.. Holiday in Lecanvey Lecanvey, or Leac an Anmhaidh has been a traditional holiday village for generations and is looking forward to a large influx of visitors again this year. Families have enjoyed their annual holidays in Lecanvey under the foot of Croagh Patrick in a variety of accommodation over the years ranging from camping and caravaning in Lecanvey camping site to bed and breakfast and self catering accommodation available in the village. Lecanvey village is 5 miles from Louisburgh on R335, and you cannot help but notice the traditionally black and white painted pub on the roadside on your right as you travel towards Westport. Here Therese and Ger and family run Stauntons bar where you can enjoy a nice quiet pint and a toasted sandwich. Peggy's as it is locally known has been in the same family for at least 5 generations and although pub trade has decreased over the last few years Stauntons has a friendly ambiance where local and tourist clientele happily mingle and chat about the weather current affairs and enjoy the craic. Traditional music sessions often turn into a sing song so it’s always a bonus when you can join in and sing or recite your party piece. What better way to unwind... This summer Therese is planning to establish a regular guided walk around the village which is at its best this time of year, pointing out many local archaeological features of the landscape. Occasional guided climbs of Croagh Patrick are also an option ascending the Reek from the west side which is a traditional local route. The benefits of climbing from this side are a less crowded pathway, panoramic views and peace and quiet. The climb should never be undertaken in misty conditions when the cloud cover can obscure the path. Activities in Lecanvey this summer include Art Classes on Tuesdays at 7pm with Chris Harper at his studio in Kilsallagh, Zumba classes in Lecanvey Community Centre on Mondays at 7pm.Pier jumping at Lecanvey pier daily [when the tide is in!] Pier Angling is also very popular with various species of fish available at the pier if you are keen fishing enthusiast. Crab fishing at the pier is a real favourite with young visitors where a simple rind of bacon can be used and reused to lure crabs on to your line .Its all great simple fun and keeps children entertained for hours. Bertra strand is a short walk from the village which boasts Irelands only tombola, and is a great place to view Croagh Patrick and Clare Island as well as the smaller islands of Clew Bay. Mass times in St Patrick’s church Lecanvey 10am Monday to Thursday Friday 7.30pm Sat. 7.30 pm and Sunday 11.30am. Confessions at 12 midday on Saturdays.
