Good Day, Highlanders!

October brings blustery days and definite signs of autumn. We have reached the midpoint of 1st quarter and teachers have updated their grades in Power School. Please check out Power School for your student’s midterm 1st quarter academic progress. We conducted a teacher training last week on how to streamline the assignments in Microsoft Teams to then be transferred to Power School which continues to be the student data system we use to record grades and construct transcripts. We recognize that navigating these digital platforms can be challenging so always feel comfortable emailing the classroom teacher if you have questions. Our teachers are attempting to reach out to every student who has not completed assignments so far and a partnership with parents/guardians is welcome. Last week I shared with the Shadle Staff an article titled, Professor Ahmad’s Six-Month Wall: Rehumanizing The Virtual Workplace by Nancy Doyle which described how to cope with the ongoing pandemic from the perspective of Dr. Aisha Ahmad, Professor of Political Science of the University of Toronto. In part, the article states:

Human Beings, Not Human Doings

Your individual coping strategies are unique to you. We are all different in what works, what provides solace, so encourage your team to share ideas. However, we are all the same in this pandemic in worrying about the future, wondering what will happen to our transport, social structures, and economic paradigms. There will be losses. We know that some of the most inspirational stories will surely emerge as we emerge, the businesses who are innovating right now in chrysalis. But in order to get there we need to rehumanize and find a way to truly connect to each other.

The article goes on to explain that the pandemic crisis is not unlike other personal crises we experience. The key is we must continue. Students need to continue to learn and teachers need to continue to teach. It is how our students develop effective coping skills, student advocacy traits (now called student agency) and resiliency. Our teachers benefit from students showing their faces on camera to discern how students are feeling and understanding the lesson. Teachers are encouraging students to reach out to them for social connections and tutorial guidance. We are lacking the typical cues of facial expressions, body language, informal chats and spontaneous hand raising in the classroom. Therefore, please encourage your student to take initiative and reach out to their teachers and counselor at any time.

We have a fun “Stay-Home-Coming 2020 Celebration” scheduled next week, October 19 – 23 that Mr. Scott Harmon’s ASB leadership class is sponsoring. The student leaders have spent a lot of time organizing the social distance/face mask, drive thru parking lot event. Be sure to encourage your Highlander to attend if for no other reason than to see their teachers and be around other Highlanders! We are pressing forward with keeping school spirit alive even in Virtual Shadle!

Also, be sure to attend the Class of 2021 Senior All-Nighter clothing drive fundraiser on Sunday, October 18th from 12 – 3 p.m. in the Wellesley parking lot. It is a wonderful way to promote the Class of 2021 who deserve a successful and traditional end of year celebration sponsored by parents.

To your good health! 1

Shadle Park High School Sports

We encourage any students interested in participating in our 2020- 21 sports season to sign up using Shadle Park’s FAMILYID (CLICK HERE) so our coaches can get a better sense of how many kids might participate. Participants will need to have a current sports physical on file. Sports physicals are good for 2 years; call our Business Office at (509)354-6720 if you are unsure if your physical is still current.

Eventually, student athletes will need to purchase a 2020-21 GSL card, but you will not need to do that at this point. We are strictly looking to get a feel for the numbers.

Questions? Contact Bruce Hafferkamp, Shadle Park’s Athletic

Director.

Daily Real-Time Virtual Shadle Student Bell Schedule Looking for the daily bell schedule? CLICK HERE TO BE ROUTED TO THAT INFORMATION ON THE SHADLE WEBPAGE!

What is Peachjar? Peachjar is an app the district started using to help alleviate the mountains of paper flyers our schools were sending home with students each week. Peachjar is an e-flyer application that works with Power School to send an email notification to parents and guardians when there is information, programs, or services to share with our families. Parents can opt out of the Peachjar notifications if they wish. Peachjar e- flyers are also available for viewing on Shadle’s webpage; just click on the Peachjar e-flyers link!
