The zine's content mostly includes creative works, such as comics, illustrations, poetry, and short stories to reflect topics, such as mental health, interpersonal relationships, culture, political climate, and more. The Philippine zines spans the years of 2006-2017, with the bulk of the material from 2017. Stored off-site. All requests to access special collections material must be made in advance using the request button located on this page. Language of Material: The zines are predominantly in Tagalog and English. Often times, Taglish, a code-switch between Tagalog and English, is used. There are a few zines that are in Cebuano and Ilocano, languages that are native to the Philippines. UCLA Catalog Record ID UCLA Catalog Record ID: 7728575 Biographical / Historical In the 1980s, Philippine zine culture first emerged, as a result of music fan zines that were introduced at the same time punk music was being introduced in the country. Contemporarily, the content of the zines Filpinos produce have expanded to explore different themes such as personal, political, cultural, literary, art, feminism, and more. The zine culture flourished in the 2000s due to the emergence of the digital age that allowed artists to post their zines on different platforms. Zine culture, however, was catalyzed by the emergence of a small press conference called Better Living Through Xeroxography (BLTX). This press conference was founded on empowering artists through the highlighting of problems in mainstream publishing and introducing self-publication as a solution. BLTX was able take the discontent over mainstream publishing and push for a way to educate and mobilize to address it through artistic means. Scope and Contents The Philippine zines reflects the feelings, aesthetics, and cultural and political ideologies of various individuals and artist collectives from the Philippines. The zine's content mostly includes creative works, such as comics, illustrations, poetry, and short stories to reflect topics, such as mental health, interpersonal relationships, culture, political climate, and more. The Philippine zines spans the years of 2006-2017, with the bulk of the material from 2017. The collection features zines from various individuals or collaborators who circulate their creations in small press expos, like Better Living Through Xeroxography (BLTX), or through local collectives, like Magpies Press, Saturnino Basilla Studio, and Soup Zine Library. Many of the zines from this collection are also a product from local universities' organizations or clubs, where students have collaborated to publish and print their work together. Subjects and Indexing Terms Zines Politics and culture -- Philippines box 1, folder 1 [untitled] 2013 Creator: Busamante, Chubbs A. Creator: Ligot, Kabel Mishka Creator: Cadiz, Marianne Scope and Contents This untitled zine consists of collages of maps and pictures of the San Francisco Bay Area. It also includes a short poem and an extracted explanation about plate tectonics, which the author uses as a metaphor of the constantly changing relationships in our own lives. The zine concludes with a small text of retractions to form a new message of the inevitable uncertainty of coming and going. Though some lines from the poems correlate with the images, some of them appear to not be related. The short stories are written around the theme of abandoning nature, in the representation of a pet dog abandoned, the earth recovering from human greed, and an imagined world in the skies. Scope and Contents An art zine by a musician who realizes that every craft will not be executed perfectly after the first try. He decides to paint, for fun, and ends up enjoying the process even if the results wasn't what he expected. The paintings in the zine are inspired by elements from the grunge and classical rock music scene, including long hair and guitars.     Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 3, December 2011 Reflections on Agoncilloʼs The Revolt of the Masses and the Politics of History Reynaldo C. ILETO* Abstract Teodoro Agoncilloʼs classic work on Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan revolt of 1896 is framed by the tumultuous events of the 1940s such as the Japanese occupation, nominal independence in 1943, Liberation, independence from the United States, and the onset of the Cold War. Was independence in 1946 really a culmination of the revolution of 1896? Was the revolution spearheaded by the Communist-led Huk movement legitimate? Agoncilloʼs book was written in 1947 in order to hook the present onto the past. The 1890s themes of exploitation and betrayal by the propertied class, the rise of a plebeian leader, and the revolt of the masses against Spain, are implicitly being played out in the late 1940s. The politics of hooking the present onto past events and heroic figures led to the prize-winning manuscriptʼs suppression from 1948 to 1955. Finally seeing print in 1956, it provided a novel and timely reading of Bonifacio at a time when Rizalʼs legacy was being debated in the Senate and as the Church hierarchy, priests, intellectuals, students, and even general public were getting caught up in heated controversies over national heroes. The circumstances of how Agoncilloʼs work came to the attention of the author in the 1960s are also discussed.     SARE, Vol. 58, Issue 1 | 2021 Making Space for Myth: Worldbuilding and Interconnected Narratives in Mythspace Francis Paolo Quina University of the Philippines-Diliman, Quezon City, the Philippines Abstract The comics medium has long proven to be fertile ground for worldbuilding, spawning not only imaginary worlds but multiverses that have become international transmedial franchises. In the Philippines, komiks (as it is called locally) has provided the Filipino popular imagination with worlds populated by superheroes, super spies, supernatural detectives, and creatures from different Philippine mythologies. The komiks series Mythspace, written by Paolo Chikiamco and illustrated by several artist-collaborators, takes the latter concept, and launches it into outer space. Classified by its own writer as a “Filipino space opera” consisting of six loosely interconnected stories, Mythspace presents a storyworld where the creatures of Philippine lower mythologies are based on various alien species that visited the Philippines long ago. The article will examine the use of interconnected narratives as a strategy for worldbuilding in Mythspace. Drawing from both subcreation and comic studies, this article posits that interconnected narratives is a worldbuilding technique particularly well-suited to comics, and that the collaborative nature of the medium allows for a diversity of genres and visual styles that can be used by future komiks creators to develop more expansive storyworlds.
