Extreme Art Film: Text, Paratext and DVD Culture Simon Hobbs The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. Word count: 85,810 Abstract Extreme art cinema, has, in recent film scholarship, become an important area of study. Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema. -

Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media Source Introduction According to the Francesca Coppa, American scholar and co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works1, fan videos are “a form of grassroots filmmaking in which clips from television shows and movies are set to music.”2 Fan videos are commonly referred to as: fanvid, songvid, vid, AMV (for Anime Music Video); their process of creation is called vidding and their editors (fan)vidders. While the “media tradition” described above in Francesca Coppa‟s definition is a crucial part of the fan video production, many other fan videos are created for anime, especially Asian ones (AMV), for video games (some of them called Machinima), or even for other subjects, from band tributes to other types of remix. The vidding tradition – in its current “shape” – goes back to the era of the first VCR; but the very first fan videos may be traced back to the seventies in a slideshow format. When channel mixers and numerous machines available to a large group of consumers emerged, this fan activity easily became an expanding one amongst the fan communities, who were often interested in new technology, whatever era it is. Vidding has now become a digital process, thanks to the expansion of computer and related technical means, including at least semiprofessional editing software. It seems relevant to point out how rare it is that a vidder goes through editing training when they begin to create fan videos, or even become a professional editor later on. Of course, exceptions exist, but vidding generally remains a hobby. -

Beyond the H8R: Theorizing the Anti-Fan “Where‟s the „Dislike‟ Button?” From the benign to the vitriolic, haters are everywhere. One TV critic recently asked, ―Whatever happened to ‗I don‘t like‘?‖(Weeks 2011) Let us consider ―hateration,‖ that is hate as anti-fan activity, on a continuum. On the passive end, if you do not like something on a Facebook friend‘s wall your options are to either comment with your dislike or ignore the posting. Somewhere in the middle of the continuum, celebrity news blogs such as dlisted, mix equal parts adoration and hate in posting, such as acknowledging celebrity birthdays under the heading ―Birthday Sluts.‖ And, at a gathering of friends, a lull in conversation can be enlivened by a round of the party game, ―Kill, Fuck, Marry‖ or naming six celebrities you would like to put on an airplane that is sure to have engine failure and crash. (Those last two are on the vitriolic end, in case that was not clear.) Hate for genre texts, people, events, and objects in popular culture is all around us, yet it continues to be an overlooked sentiment in fan studies. Anti-fans hang about the periphery of fandom, but they are nonetheless part of the fan world. It is not that web 2.0 – the mix of interactivity and online communities – is blind to the existence of dislike nor completely ignores the sentiment. The 2012 Adobe Digital Index Report finds that a little more than half (53%) of consumers surveyed ―said they would very much like to have a ‗dislike‘ button‖ on the social media site Facebook (Lomas 2012). -

BUDOR THE WAY THEY HAVE SEX IS TO CUDDLE, THEN THIS STRANGE ECTOPLASM BY KATHY NOBLE Kathy Noble met with Dora Budor —an artist of Croatian origin based in New York—to discuss the influence of cinema on her work, interweaving the staged fiction of film with lived experience: ranging from cyberpunk and symbiogenesis, to the endless worries and politics of being a human body and mind, via physical scars, infection, illness, ageing, the survival of our psyche, and the body’s lymphatic relationship to physical environments—all of which manifest in Budor’s work. Discussing ideas related to science fiction —from the disturbing visions of David Cronenberg, to popular Hollywood blockbusters—they consider cinema as a space in which alternative worlds can be constructed to form a social commentary that addresses contemporaneous issues and anxieties; from ecological apocalypse to the evolution of artificial intelligence. Representations and Reality: Defining the Ongoing Relationship between Anime and Otaku Cultures By: Priscilla Pham Submitted to OCAD University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 2021 © Priscilla Pham, 2021 Abstract This major research paper investigates the ongoing relationship between anime and otaku culture through four case studies; each study considers a single situation that demonstrates how this relationship changes through different interactions with representation. The first case study considers the early transmedia interventions that began to engage fans. The second uses Takashi Murakami’s theory of Superflat to connect the origins of the otaku with the interactions otaku have with representation. The third examines the shifting role of the otaku from that of consumer to producer by means of engagement with the hierarchies of perception, multiple identities, and displays of sexualities in the production of fan-created works. The final case study reflects on the 2.5D phenomenon, through which 2D representations are brought to 3D environments. Together, these case studies reveal the drivers of the otaku evolution and that the anime–otaku relationship exists on a spectrum that teeters between reality and representation. i Acknowledgements I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my primary advisor, Ala Roushan, for her continued support and confidence in my writing throughout this paper’s development. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally. -
