Attitudes Towards the Safeguarding of Minority Languages and Dialects in Modern Italy
ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE SAFEGUARDING OF MINORITY LANGUAGES AND DIALECTS IN MODERN ITALY: The Cases of Sardinia and Sicily Maria Chiara La Sala Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Leeds Department of Italian September 2004 This copy has been supplied on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. The candidate confirms that the work submitted is her own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others. ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to assess attitudes of speakers towards their local or regional variety. Research in the field of sociolinguistics has shown that factors such as gender, age, place of residence, and social status affect linguistic behaviour and perception of local and regional varieties. This thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part the concept of language, minority language, and dialect is discussed; in the second part the official position towards local or regional varieties in Europe and in Italy is considered; in the third part attitudes of speakers towards actions aimed at safeguarding their local or regional varieties are analyzed. The conclusion offers a comparison of the results of the surveys and a discussion on how things may develop in the future. This thesis is carried out within the framework of the discipline of sociolinguistics. ii DEDICATION Ai miei figli Youcef e Amil che mi hanno distolto -

An area of 2100 km2 was investigated by means of 535 data points obtained from laboratory and in situ gamma-ray spectrometry measurements. These data volume corresponds to the highest sampling density of the European Variscides, aimed at studying the genetic processes of the upper crust potentially triggered by an enrichment of radiogenic heat-producing elements. -

Corsica-Sardinia
Corsica &Sardinia The Essence of Italy and France The Mediterranean is full of unique experiences and cultures, but none compare to a luxury yacht charter through Corsica, France and Sardinia, Italy. The two islands encompass all these two infamous countries have to offer with its own distinctive flavor. Created by violent volcanic eruptions, Corsica boasts the most mountainous region of the Med, and is nicknamed the “scented island” for the intoxicating perfumes that fill the air. Sailors and hikers adore the unparalleled natural wonders of this stunning island, while tourists flock here for the rich history and legendary beaches. Further south is Sardinia – a unique island with its own natural wonders set against wild landscapes, hidden rocky coves, and the much-vaunted Costa Smeralda. But here, past the dazzling beaches, there’s a playground for the wealthy and a flourishing nigh life – which includes the “Polynesia of Italy,” Porto Cervo. Aboard your luxury yacht, there is no better way to experience Corsica’s scenic charm and Sardinia’s authentic style. Calvi, Corsica The first stop on your dream voyage begins in the enchanting port of Calvi – a fun-loving, cobble- stoned village that was once used as a Roman trading post. Often compared to the French Riviera, Calvi’s striking beauty hits you hardest as you glide past the monumental 13th century citadel, which has a breathtaking backdrop of rugged mountains and pine forest. You’ll find plenty of relaxed eateries to indulge and discover along the quai Landry – a lovely seafront walkway. On the south side, you’ll find a separate world of sand and sun. -

Sardinia & Corsica 4-day yacht charter itinerary X Day Destination Distance 1 Porto Cervo – Capo Testa 46nm 2 Capo Testa –Bonifacio 15nm 3 Bonifacio – Lavezzi - La Maddalena 32nm 4 La Maddalena – Porto Cervo 25nm 3 CORSICA Bonifacio Lavezzi Cape La Capo Testa Maddalena Porto Cervo SARDINIA 4 5 The Capo Testa Capo Testa is in the north of Sardinia, you can see Corsica across the Strait of Bonifacio. Imposing rocks carved into interesting shapes by strong winds, lunar landscapes, wild coves and spellbinding beauty – this is what Capo Testa is all about. Incredible windsculpted rocks attract thousands of tourists here. In pre-historic times some of those granite formations, tafoni, with rounded entrances and concave walls, where locals set up homes. Later, in Roman times, Capo Testa granite was mined and shipped to metropole, where it was reportedly used to build the Pantheon. 6 Highlight Te 1-hour hike to the cape: magnificent views of the rock formations, rocky coves and the cobalt Mediterranean 7 Bonifacio In the very south of Corsica there is a fabulous isolated peninsula, with the steep coasts of strikingly white limestone. And this is exactly where Bonifacio, the most photogenic of Corsican cities, is situated. Strolling along Bonifacio waterfront promenade and looking south, you will see Sardinia from across the strait, which is called, appropriately, the strait of Bonifacio. Bonifacio’s must-see attraction is the Citadel, perched on the rocky outcrop overlooking the port, and the steep Escalier du Roi d'Aragon, or the King Aragon Steps, leading from the citadel to the waterfront.
