  • Indoor and Outdoor Waterpark Supply Continues Growth As Surf Simulators Take Center Wave
Indoor and Outdoor Waterpark Supply Continues Growth as Surf Simulators Take Center Wave By David J. Sangree, MAI, CPA, ISHC The waterpark industry has shown continued growth in 2014 with increased numbers of indoor and outdoor waterparks being developed throughout the United States and Canada. Our projections for 2015 show a number of new openings will occur throughout North America, which will boost the supply of waterparks and increase revenues for this growing industry. As the amount of indoor waterpark square footage and number of outdoor waterparks increase in 2014 and 2015, many new parks are looking to the latest trend in recreational water entertainment to set them apart. Simulated surf machines provide a skill-based entertainment option and spectator sport. They are popular with older children, teenagers and young adults due to the inherent challenges in surfing. HL&A defines various waterparks the following ways: An indoor waterpark resort is a lodging establishment containing an aquatic facility with a minimum of 10,000 square feet of indoor waterpark space inclusive of amenities such as slides, tubes, and a variety of indoor water play features. A resort with an outdoor waterpark is a lodging establishment with an outdoor aquatic facility with three or more waterpark elements requiring lifeguards such as slides, lazy rivers, or wave pools. A standalone indoor waterpark is an aquatic facility that is not attached to a lodging establishment with a minimum of 10,000 square feet of indoor waterpark space inclusive of amenities such as slides, tubes, and a variety of indoor water play features. An outdoor waterpark is an outdoor aquatic facility with three or more water slides.

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation 2019 ANNUAL REPOR T 924 Avenue J East Grand Prairie, Texas 75050 972-595-5000 www.sixflags.com Dear Six Flags Stockholders: Even as the world grapples with the implications of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, I am enthusiastic to lead the Company toward a new phase of long-term growth. The Company has a great history, an enduring brand, and a dedicated and talented team of employees. We are committed to providing unique and thrilling experiences that create lifelong memories for our guests. Recently, the Company has encountered challenges. Core revenue growth has slowed while labor costs have accelerated, and our international licensing projects have not delivered as expected. We will ensure we have the best leadership team with the right skills, critical experiences, and differentiated organizational capability aimed at delivering superior results. We will hold ourselves accountable for following through on our commitments. We see an opportunity to reaccelerate profitable growth in our core park business, but this will require investments in infrastructure and technology to improve the parks’ appearance, culinary, productivity, and supply chain. Our business transformation will require us to invest in the end-to-end guest experience. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we temporarily closed our parks beginning in mid-March. This has caused us to delay these investments and scale back spending of expenses and capital until business operations begin to normalize. Rest assured, however, that we are positioning ourselves so that we are ready to aggressively resume our business transformation plans as soon as prudently possible. On behalf of the directors, officers, and employees of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, I would like to express our appreciation for your continued investment and support.

  • Analysis of Indoor Waterpark Resorts
2017 Waterpark Forecast: Continued Growth By David J. Sangree, MAI, CPA, ISHC Introduction The waterpark industry continues to expand in North America, with more than $550 million worth of new investment in indoor and outdoor waterparks and their related resorts in 2016. Waterpark related development is expected to grow in 2017, with over 40 expansions and new facilities opening. In 2017, we project 16 municipal and nine private outdoor waterparks will open, outpacing 2016’s nine municipal and five private outdoor additions. We foresee continued, albeit slower, growth in the indoor segment, where an additional 243,000 square feet of waterpark space are planned. Two of this year’s most anticipated additions are Universal Orlando Volcano Bay in Orlando, Florida, and the Kalahari Resort phase two expansion in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. The 30-acre Volcano Bay waterpark will feature 18 state-of-the-art attractions and is poised to set a new standard in the outdoor waterpark market. Kalahari Resort is expanding its current resort to nearly 1,000 guestrooms and will have a 220,000 square foot indoor waterpark. When complete, it will be one of the largest indoor waterpark resorts in North America. 2017 WATERPARK STANDINGS As of February 2017, the United States has 1,029 waterparks, an increase of 34 waterparks over last year’s reported 996. The majority of this gain was in the outdoor segment and was split between private and municipal facilities. Twenty-four properties opened in 2016, while H&LA found ten additional properties through our monitoring the ever-evolving national waterpark market, discovering waterparks that have not previously been listed in databases.
