Dorothy Edwards, 56, who was identifi ed as one of Pasadena’s most vulnerable and likely to die on the streets lives in a tent along the 210 Freeway before being housed under the Housing First model. Dorothy, a 40-year drug addict, comes out of her secluded compound during one of her many trips to Target, which is close by. It is there she gathered water, used the facilities and made her base to panhandle. She later credited the staff at Target for their kindness.

“I had no hope: I thought I was going to die out there on the streets. My biggest fear was that something really bad was going to happen to me, and nobody would ever fi nd me.”

68

Pages_v3.indd 68 11/19/14 9:17 PM The despair Dorothy felt contrasted with her middle-class upbringing. “I never in my wildest dreams ever imagined I’d be homeless,” she said. “We had a built-in pool, waterfall, pool table, huge house. My parents cared about my grades.”

Dorothy runs into old friends, who pass her a bottle as she “flies a sign” at the parking lot entrance to Tar- get. Shawn Morrissey, of Housing Works, was in the process of helping her off the streets and initially Doro- thy was skeptical and suspicious. Later, after Dorothy had a home, he convinced her to seek treatment for her drug addiction.

“I love this place. It’s like, I look around, it’s all mine. It’s hard for me to believe. I’ll do anything to keep it, and my life. And to show the people who helped me how grateful I am.”

I think this is the second photo finish he’s won for us like this. When I started training here, I think it took me a year to win my first race and to have it end like this just seems surreal.”
