  • The White Noise Supremacists” (From the Village Voice, 1979)
LESTER BANGS “The White Noise Supremacists” (from the Village Voice, 1979) The other day I was talking on the phone with a friend who hangs out on the CBGB's scene a lot. She was regaling me with examples of the delights available to females in the New York subway system. "So the train came to a sudden halt and I fell on my ass in the middle of the car, and not only did nobody offer to help me up but all these boons just sat there laughing at me." "Boons?" I said. "What's boons?" "You know," she said. "Black guys." "Why do you call them that?" "I dunno. From `baboons,' I guess." I didn't say anything. "Look, I know it's not cool," she finally said. "But neither is being a woman in this city. Every fucking place you go you get these cats hassling you, and sometimes they try to pimp you. And a lot of the times when they hassle you they're black, and when they try to pimp me they're always black. Eventually you can't help it, you just end up reacting." Sometimes I think nothing is simple but the feeling of pain. When I was first asked to write this article, I said sure, because the racism (not to mention the sexism, which is even more pervasive and a whole other piece) on the American New Wave scene had been something that I'd been bothered by for a long time. When I told the guys in my own band that I was doing this, they just laughed.

  • Women in Rock OLLI Berkeley Course Material
Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

  • Rip “Her” to Shreds
Rip “Her” To Shreds: How the Women of 1970s New York Punk Defied Gender Norms Rebecca Willa Davis Senior Thesis in American Studies Barnard College, Columbia University Thesis Advisor: Karine Walther April 18, 2007 Contents Introduction 2 Chapter One Patti Smith: Jesus Died For Somebody’s Sins But Not Mine 11 Chapter Two Deborah Harry: I Wanna Be a Platinum Blonde 21 Chapter Three Tina Weymouth: Seen and Not Seen 32 Conclusion 44 Bibliography 48 1 Introduction Nestled between the height of the second wave of feminism and the impending takeover of government by conservatives in 1980 stood a stretch of time in which Americans grappled with new choices and old stereotypes. It was here, in the mid-to-late 1970s, that punk was born. 1 Starting in New York—a city on the verge of bankruptcy—and spreading to Los Angeles and London, women took to the stage, picking punk as their Trojan Horse for entry into the boy bastion of rock’n’roll. 2 It wasn’t just the music that these women were looking to change, but also traditionally held notions of gender as well. This thesis focuses on Patti Smith, Deborah Harry, and Tina Weymouth—arguably the first, and most important, female punk musicians—to demonstrate that women in punk used multiple methods to question, re-interpret, and reject gender. On the surface, punk appeared just as sexist as any other previous rock movement; men still controlled the stage, the sound room, the music journals and the record labels. As writer Carola Dibbell admitted in 1995, “I still have trouble figuring out how women ever won their place in this noise-loving, boy-loving, love-fearing, body-hating music, which at first glance looked like one more case where rock’s little problem, women, would be neutralized by male androgyny.” According to Dibbell, “Punk was the music of the obnoxious, permanently adolescent white boy—skinny, zitty, ugly, loud, stupid, fucked up.”3 Punk music was loud and aggressive, spawning the violent, almost exclusively-male mosh pit at live shows that still exists today.

  • Kristin Kontrol Bio
Kristin Kontrol Bio Sometimes you have to rip it up and start again. It was a tough call for Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls was her guise for the better part of a decade, an outlet through which she had crafted an instantly identifiable body of work. Demos made in a studio apartment on a nylon string guitar and posted to a Myspace page pricked the ears of Sub Pop. From there, Dee Dee assembled her group of badass, blackclad cadets and toured the world. Over the course of three albums, four EPs, and a bold brace of singles, Dum Dum Girls morphed from the girlgroupgonebad moves of debut album I Will Be (2010), to the plush noirpop of 2014’s Too True, with its motorik beats and svelte harmonies; a dark heart burning bright. But sometimes the project you pour your soul into ends up hemming you in. As her music evolved, Dee Dee found that she would be forever refracted through the prism of Dum Dum Girls’ early work: retroleaning female harmonies, a backdrop of lofi, fuzzedup guitars. At the top of 2015, she decided to shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee for her real name, Kristin, and adding Kontrol. It was a spontaneous idea – but it resonated with her. As Karen O once counseled her, it may be a leap into the unknown, but little risk means little reward. Her challenge was to start fresh, and go further back into her relationship with music. Her goal was to sweep all her loves together into one genreless experience.

A School for Singing: The Poetics, Politics, and Aesthetics of the CBGB Scene Shaun Michael Cullen Springfield, PA M.A., Humanities, University of Chicago, 2005 B.F.A., Cinema Studies, New York University, 2002 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature University of Virginia December, 2013 © Copyright by Shaun Cullen All Rights Reserved November 2013 ii ABSTRACT On August 16, 1974, exactly one week after Richard Nixon’s resignation, the Ramones made their debut at CBGB. Over the next ten years, the club would become synonymous with the punk aesthetic that the Ramones embodied. By shifting, however temporarily and by no means completely, the focus of punk studies (and by extension, cultural studies, American studies, urban studies, and queer studies) back to an often disavowed origin point, CBGB and New York City, “A School for Singing” rediscovers a utopian imaginary inherent in that scene often taken to be one of the most shambolic and nihilistic in the history of postmodern arts and letters. Punk was not just a musical movement, it was an artistic event that had wider ramifications, felt across the art world, from the dingiest clubs to the most rarefied art galleries, publishing houses, and runways. Just this past year, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its fifth most popular exhibit of all time, “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” which features, among other mementos of the punk era, a faithful recreation of the CBGB bathroom, where “all the action happened,” as Patti Smith once quipped.

His talent as a music industry executive is only rivaled by his eye as a collector of fine art. According to Art Daily, Madonna stated that Stein “started collecting Art Deco back in the early 1960s, long before it was in vogue and moved onto the Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite paintings a few years later.” Ahmet Ertegun, Co-founder of the legendary record label Atlantic, added that “Seymour Stein has been an avid collector of art, objects d’art and antique furnishings.
