Ichthyoplankton samples were collected in 10 oceanographic cruises conducted from 1975 to 1981. Serranidae larvae were identified into 15 species, including 11 genera and four subfamilies. Except for Diplectrum formosum, which was widely distributed throughout the SBB, Hyporthodus spp. and Baldwinella vivanus were distributed in the southern portion of the SBB, while other species were distributed mainly in the northern portion of the SBB, inside the 200 m isobath. Local depth, latitude, distance from the closest island and salinity were factors that influenced significantly on the distribution and abundance of the most abundant taxa D. formosum, Diplectrum spp., Serranus spp. and Mycteroperca spp. Significant progress was made in identifying grouper larvae from the SBB (Epinephelus morio, Epinephelus itajara and Hyporthodus nigritus). David Johnson ABSTRACT Relationships among epinepheline genera are investigated based on cladistic analysis of larval and adult morphology. Five monophyletic tribes are delineated, and relationships among tribes and among genera of the tribe Grammistini are hypothesized. Generic com- position of tribes differs from Johnson's (1983) classification only in the allocation of Je- boehlkia to the tribe Grammistini rather than the Liopropomini. Despite the presence of the skin toxin grammistin in the Diploprionini and Grammistini, we consider the latter to be the sister group of the Liopropomini. This hypothesis is based, in part, on previously un- recognized larval features. Larval morphology also provides evidence of monophyly of the subfamily Epinephelinae, the clade comprising all epinepheline tribes except Niphonini, and the tribe Grammistini. Larval features provide the only evidence of a monophyletic Epine- phelini and a monophyletic clade comprising the Diploprionini, Liopropomini and Gram- mistini; identification of larvae of more epinephelines is needed to test those hypotheses. Within the tribe Grammistini, we propose that Jeboehlkia gladifer is the sister group of a natural assemblage comprising the former pseudogrammid genera (Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia). The "soapfishes" (Grammistes, Grammistops, Pogonoperca and Rypticus) are not monophyletic, but form a series of sequential sister groups to Jeboehlkia, Aporops, Pseu- dogramma and Suttonia (the closest of these being Grammistops, followed by Rypticus, then Grammistes plus Pogonoperca). The absence in adult Jeboehlkia of several derived features shared by Grammistops, Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia is incongruous with our hypothesis but may be attributable to paedomorphosis.

The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. The morphological characters along with their body colour patterns are described. This is the first record of the species from Visakhapatnam coastal waters, east coast of India.     ABSTRACT RUNDE, BRENDAN JAMES. Investigating Challenges and Solutions for Management and Assessment of Reef Fishes off the Southeastern U.S.A. (Under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey A. Buckel). The southeast US Atlantic supports fisheries for a wide variety of species. Participation in and regulations for these fisheries have both increased in recent decades, causing more fish to be released. Fisheries that release a portion of catch pose challenges for management, particularly if release mortality is high. The complex of reef-associated fishes in the southeast US supports one such fishery. Severe barotrauma experienced by many species in this group leads to levels of release mortality that can impede sustainability. These circumstances have left managers with few options; in order to achieve sustainability in the fishery for fishes like snappers and groupers, either release mortality must be substantially reduced or effort must be eliminated in a portion of habitat. In the first two chapters of this dissertation, I explored these two options via empirical studies. I tagged deep-water groupers and released them with descender devices, and estimated ~60% survival for fish released at depth (a major improvement over the assumed 0% survival for surface releases). In addition, I evaluated the effect of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) that was designated in 2009 off Wilmington, NC. Using scientific sonar and biological sampling, I found limited evidence that the MPA is working as intended, though other analyses were inconclusive. It is possible that more time and stricter enforcement are necessary before the MPA effect is detectable. In the third chapter of this dissertation, I explored the implications of a phenomenon that has long been ignored in most fisheries management: that some individual fish are caught and released multiple times.
