I originally used the pseudonym “Theta” at the request of Greg Barnes until he was ready to “go public” with his defection from Scientology. I also used the pseudonym “Theta 8-8008” around this same time period. Bernd Luebeck, Ex-Guardian’s Office Intelligence and then Ron’s Org staff ran the website www.freezone.org. In 1999, just after my time track was released privately, Bernd used it on his website as-is. He later expanded on my original time track with items of interest to himself. Prior to my doing this time track, Bernd, (nor anyone else involved with Scientology on the internet), had ever thought of the idea to do things this way in relation to Scientology. Jesiek Abstract In this thesis I develop a contemporary history of memetics, or the field dedicated to the study of memes. Those working in the realm of meme theory have been generally concerned with developing either evolutionary or epidemiological approaches to the study of human culture, with memes viewed as discrete units of cultural transmission. At the center of my account is the argument that memetics has been characterized by an atypical pattern of growth, with the meme concept only moving toward greater academic legitimacy after significant development and diffusion in the popular realm. As revealed by my analysis, the history of memetics upends conventional understandings of discipline formation and the popularization of scientific ideas, making it a novel and informative case study in the realm of science and technology studies. Furthermore, this project underscores how the development of fields and disciplines is thoroughly intertwined with a larger social, cultural, and historical milieu.     FIFTEEN “He Killed Her” On July 3, 2003, I was at my wit’s end. My investigation was threatening to break up my marriage and drive me mad. I had developed yet one more nervous tick. Now I had a habit of bending my head down and running my fingers through my hair. I was looking to see if the mic was sticking out again—even when I wasn’t at work, even when I wasn’t recording. The long Fourth of July weekend was here and I resented it. I resented the idea of three torturous days at home, unable to think about anything except finding out the truth about Alcor. I dreaded being away from the office. Now it was two days until the first anniversary of Ted Williams’s death. When would it end? I needed to take matters into my own hands and force the situation. I wired myself up and marched into Joe Hovey’s office. He was one of the longest-serving Alcorians and seemed to know the entire history of the place. He also knew that people around the office were plotting and planning to oust him. Maybe these shifting sands would make him eager to have a friendly conversation with me. I started off by telling Joe that Charles had mentioned Mike Darwin and the John Dentinger incident to me. I led him to believe I knew more than I actually did. Still, Joe wasn’t exactly keen at first to volunteer information about homicide. 239 So I changed tack and hoped to steer the conversation back to the subject of the suspicious deaths in a roundabout way.

Al surfend op het internet kwam ik terecht op een website waar je een gratis persoonlijkheidstest kon afnemen, die nadien door een team van experts grondig onder de loep zou worden genomen. Die kon je enkel aanvragen door je naam, adres en telefoonnummer op te geven. In plaats van een persoonlijkheidstest kreeg ik een brief toegestuurd vanwege de Kerk van Scientology, die me uitnodigde naar hun dichtstbijzijnde afdeling – in Brussel – te gaan, om daar de test af te nemen. Ik besloot hier niet op te reageren. Voor mij persoonlijk was het woord Kerk hierin doorslaggevend, gezien mijn atheïstische overtuiging. Enkele weken later kreeg ik een telefoontje van iemand van diezelfde Kerk: een vriendelijke dame die me vroeg waarom ik niet had gereageerd op de brief en me daarop nog eens uitnodigde een gratis persoonlijkheidstest af te nemen in Brussel. Ook hier ging ik niet op in. Later kreeg ik af en toe nog een brief toegestuurd vanwege de Kerk van Scientology die me uitnodigde om eens een kijkje te gaan nemen in hun afdeling in Brussel. Nieuwsgierig ging ik op zoek naar informatie over die organisatie, vooral met behulp van het internet. De informatie die ik daar vond, was heel uiteenlopend: van heel sterke 'anti- sites' tot 'pro-sites' die reclame maakten voor Scientology.

Now the boy wanted my help in getting back on line. I told the kid that I sympathized with his father. What if the sysadmin and I had been major grouches? This kid could have wound up in juvenile detention. Now I don't agree with putting harmless hackers in jail, and I would never have testified against him. But that's what some people do to folks who go snooping in other people's computer accounts -- even when the culprit does no harm.
