NEWS FROM THE BOARD News from the Board By Jessica Cheng, Recording Secretary IN DECEMBER 2017, a friend cornered me at a Christmas party and asked if I would be interested in joining the AWA executive board, as the incumbent recording secretary had to leave Hong Kong suddenly. It was a surprise as it was not something I had previously considered, but the following month Andrea Roth, the AWA president at the time, appointed me to fill the newly vacated position. My friend thought I would be a good fit as the role of recording secretary requires being organized and patient, with a talent for details. What I hadn’t anticipated is that a position on the AWA executive board means not only making sure all the requirements of a position are fulfilled, but also taking an instrumental part in the discussions that guide the overall organization. In our board meetings we work together to guide the AWA through issues such as splitting into a club and a foundation, technology decisions and figuring out what organizations to partner with. After my appointment to finish my predecessor’s term concluded, I was nominated and elected twice for the position. All elected AWA board positions come up for election once a year and you may run twice for the same position for two consecutive years. This month starts the nomination season for the July 2020–June 2021 term. The elected positions on the board are listed below. All roles are open for nomination; however, the three denoted by an asterisk are currently filled with board members who are interested and eligible to continue their role in the coming membership year. We need new blood for the six remaining positions: President* Recording Secretary 1st VP, Fundraising Charitable Donations Chairperson 2nd VP, Membership Community Service Chairperson* 3rd VP, Activities* Education & Scholarship Chairperson Treasurer If you would be interested in learning more about these positions, the job descriptions and requirements can be found on the AWA website under Member Resources > Forms > Board and Organization Information > Executive Board Job Descriptions. You can also contact any of the executive board members, including myself, via our contact details on the last page of this magazine. The AWA executive board needs committed women with a range of skills and talents to operate successfully. If you are interested in the challenge or know someone who may be a good fit, please fill out the electronic nomination form that will be sent out via the AWA e-newsletter on February 15. Candidates will then be interviewed by the nomination committee, a group of women selected from the AWA membership to interview candidates and prepare the nomination slate. Please consider if the AWA executive board is a good fit for you! 2 AWARE February 2020 AWA ENJOYS Avenue of the Stars Stroll and Lunch at Rosewood Hong Kong Welcome New Members Tayma Page Allies Clare Butler Marlies Gerritsen-Feenstra Karen Gollob Susana Halliday Jane Kim Jennifer Lewis Leasha Quinn Grace Scully Linda Vanderpyl What’s for Supper?
