Thomas Cripps, for example, examines a relatively ineffective isolated attempt to counter the notions of White supremacy promoted in the film. This study makes the case for applying a non-traditional tri-level analysis when measuring the effectiveness of such attempts. The paper focuses on efforts to redeem the image and the potential of African Americans after 1915 in the Black public sphere in three concurrent vehicles: the written word, the activism of individuals and progressive organizations and the production of silent films. The study defines and distinguishes between racism, anti-racism and racial vindication. Racial vindication is the method used by the men and women that this study focuses on. The paper begins by documenting how notions of White supremacy and Black inferiority were at the root of America's socio-cultural atmosphere during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This set the stage for D. W. Griffith's movie. The study then looks at how contemporary scholars in the 1910s and 1920s -- writers, visual artists, civic and community leaders and film makers -- attempted to counter Griffith's propaganda through various means. I argue that there is considerable merit in analyzing the combined efforts of these outspoken men and women to attempt to rescue the humanity of African Americans from Griffith's clutches in three broad arenas. My argument does agree with many film scholars that no one single act of racial vindication sufficiently challenged the effectiveness of The Birth of a Nation. We use as a case study the silent film The Birth of a Race (1918). When this film is considered in isolation, it does have a minimal affect on stemming the tide of racism in America. This is precisely the point of this thesis. No prominent Griffith scholar has published a comprehensive study that considers how literature, sociopolitical activism and silent film all worked in concert to combat the impact The Birth of a Nation had ii on America. This paper does so. It contributes to the historiography of early American silent film and the racial vindication movement by calling for a triangular analysis and validation of the cumulative impact varied forms of resistance had on representations of White supremacy in The Birth of a Nation. Chapter III and the study's conclusion comment on the benefits that such an analysis contributes to future studies of racial vindication in response to artistic expressions deemed to be racist. iii RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1. What is the genesis and the cultural context of the racist theories, science and scholarship that painted the national landscape in 1915, leading the way for filmmaker D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation? 2. What influence did the traditions of racial vindication and of a Black public sphere play in motivating writers, activist organizations and film makers (with emphasis on The Birth of a Race a case study) to counter the notions of White superiority and Black inferiority? 3. What are the differences between racism, anti-racism and racial vindication, and were these movements in play following the release of The Birth of a Nation? 4. What lessons can we learn from conducting a cross-genre analysis of the racial vindication movement in America in response to The Birth of a Nation? 1 THE ARGUMENT I argue that by scholars applying a comprehensive tri-level (genre) analysis of the racial vindication movement in the Black public sphere in America, following the release of The Birth of a Nation (1915), they provide a more effective assessment of the cumulative viability of varied responses to the film than does the more commonly applied single-genre analysis. 2 METHODOLOGY The argument uses qualitative research, supported by archival research that makes use of both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources used in the study include the films The Birth of a Nation (1915), the film The Birth of a Race (1918) and early twentieth century newspaper articles. The literature review relies heavily on secondary sources including essays, pamphlets, web sites, plays and books. The Birth of a Nation as American Myth Abstract The Birth of a Nation was one of the most important films of all time, both for its technical and aesthetic achievements and for its enduring legacy of racism. This paper uses Bruce Lincoln's approach to myth as a form of discourse and Robert Bellah's notion of civil religion to show how Birth might be understood as a mythic component of American civil religion. From this perspective, Birth serves as a paradigmatic story of American origins rooted in ideas of white supremacy. At the end of the article Oscar Micheaux's work, Within our Gates, is used to briefly demonstrate filmic strategies for countering Birth as myth. Blaxploitation and the Cinematic Image of the South Abstract: The so-called blaxploitation genre – a brand of 1970s film-making designed to engage young Black urban viewers – has become synonymous with channeling the political energy of Black Power into larger-than-life Black characters beating “the [White] Man” in real-life urban settings. In spite of their urban focus, however, blaxploitation films repeatedly referenced an idea of the South whose origins lie in antebellum abolitionist propaganda. Developed across the history of American film, this idea became entangled in the post-war era with the Civil Rights struggle by way of the “race problem” film, which identified the South as “racist country,” the privileged site of “racial” injustice as social pathology.1 Recently revived in the widely acclaimed works of Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), the two modes of depicting the South put forth in blaxploitation and the “race problem” film continue to hold sway to this day. Yet, while the latter remains indelibly linked, even in this revised perspective, to the abolitionist vision of emancipation as the result of a struggle between idealized, plaintive Blacks and pathological, racist Whites, blaxploitation’s troping of the South as the fulfillment of grotesque White “racial” fantasies offers a more powerful and transformative means of addressing America’s “race problem.” Keywords: blaxploitation, American film, race and racism, slavery, abolitionism The year 2013 was a momentous one for “racial” imagery in Hollywood films. Du Bois and Joel Augustus Rogers, and thus, it takes a look at how Du Bois and Rogers’ historical and political thoughts about each other evolved and how their historical writings challenged racist Western historical thought. The essay also seeks to raise the question of what it was like to write and research Africana historical research without funds from institutions or philanthropists that did not give money towards certain type of historical works that challenged status quo Western historiography. Griffith's ascent from anonymity to world fame and contains intimate glimpses into his early years, as well as his later ones, with his subsequent decline in recognition. The display attempts to demonstrate the diversity and richness of the Museum's Griffith collection, which contains in all 10,000 documents, from which the present artifacts were selected. It was conceived and planned by Eileen Bowser, Associate Curator in the Department of Film. Mrs. Bowser, who is in charge of all the Museum's film archives,catalogued and indexed its ex­ tensive, valuable Griffith collection.     D.W. Griffith’s INTOLERANCE (1916) A Colossal Saga of Hatred and Prejudice In 1915 David Wark Griffith directed and produced The Birth of a Nation, a visionary silent movie that used ground-breaking techniques, such as fades, close-ups and flashbacks. The public was enthralled by the grandeur, novelty and length of the over 3-hour long show. To this day, this film is studied at Film Academies worldwide. The Birth of a Nation also repelled some audiences - only ‘some’ in 1915 - with its portrayal of African Americans as depraved creatures who lusted after white young women, or as mentally underdeveloped beings. The film also pays tribute to the Ku Klux Klan that “ran to the rescue of the downtrodden South after the Civil War », as D.W. Griffith wrote in his autobiography. The idea was « to tell the truth » about the American Civil War. Although appreciated even today as an outstanding cinematic achievement, Birth of a Nation shocks due to its racist content. After its premiere in Los Angeles on February 8, 1915, the film stirred large protests among black communities across America, which started a movement aimed at banning this movie. To ban The Birth of a Nation for appearing in theatres, African-Americans had to go beyond showing that the film slandered them and utterly distorted history. The leaders of Boston's NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People) argued that the film was a threat to public safety, that it heightened racial tensions, and could incite violence. Despite all their efforts, the film was shown in Boston 360 times over a period of six-and-a-half months.

The first major section of this book, "Analyzing a Moving Image as a Historical Document," discusses the two stages in the analysis of a moving image document: (1) a general analysis of content, production, and reception; and (2) the study of the moving image document as a representation of history, as evidence for social and cultural history, as evidence for historical fact, or as evidence for the history of film and television.
