The Admiration and Complementary Africana Historical Scholarship of W.E.B. Du Bois and Joel Augustus Rogers by Thabiti Asukile, Ph.D. [email protected] (UC Berkeley, History, 2007) Independent Historian Abstract This essay delineates the respectful relationship and the historical works between W. E. B. Du Bois and Joel Augustus Rogers, and thus, it takes a look at how Du Bois and Rogers’ historical and political thoughts about each other evolved and how their historical writings challenged racist Western historical thought. The essay also seeks to raise the question of what it was like to write and research Africana historical research without funds from institutions or philanthropists that did not give money towards certain type of historical works that challenged status quo Western historiography. In addition, it also raise the question what was it like to conduct Africana archival research or write Africana history in era when the British and American academy did not find viable the need to teach or research African history. “Now Toynbee’s word carries great weight. He’s often called the world’s greatest living historian. Yet there are numerous facts to disprove him.”1 Joel Augustus Rogers, Pittsburgh Courier, 1952 I am quite frank: I do not pretend to “love” white people. I think that as a race they are the most selfish of any on earth. I think that the history of the world for the last thousand years proves this beyond doubt, and it is more than proven today by the Salvation Army tactics of Toynbee and his school of history. -

Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. Yang: Scenes of Slavery and the 'Chinee' in Uncle Remus and a Minstrel In the June 1889 issue of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, the magazine’s literary editor Laurence Hutton wrote an homage to the white American actors and songwriters of blackface minstrelsy since the 1830s called “The Negro on the Stage.” He eulogized that the minstrels had made “the world happier and brighter for a time by their public careers, and they have left a pleasant and a cheerful memory behind them” (144). -

Picaninny Caricature 8/1/14 10:46 AM The Picaninny Caricature The picaninny 1 was the dominant racial caricature of black children for most of this country's history. They were "child coons," miniature versions of Stepin Fetchit (see Pilgrim (2000)). Picaninnies had bulging eyes, unkempt hair, red lips, and wide mouths into which they stuffed huge slices of watermelon. They were themselves tasty morsels for alligators. They were routinely shown on postcards, posters, and other ephemera being chased or eaten. Picaninnies were portrayed as nameless, shiftless natural buffoons running from alligators and toward fried chicken. The first famous picaninny was Topsy -- a poorly dressed, disreputable, neglected slave girl. Topsy appeared in Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Topsy was created to show the evils of slavery. Here was an untamable "wild child" who had been indelibly corrupted by slavery. She was one of the blackest of her race; and her round, shining eyes, glittering as glass beads, moved with quick and restless glances over everything in the room. Her mouth half open with astonishment at the wonders of the new Mas'r's parlor, displayed a white and brilliant set of teeth. Her woolly hair was braided in sundry little tails, which stuck out in every direction. The expression of her face was an odd mixture of shrewdness and cunning, over which was oddly drawn, like a veil, an expression of the most doleful gravity and solemnity. She was dressed in a sin- gle filthy, ragged garment, made of bagging; and stood with her hands demurely folded in front of her. -

1 Number 2 January 2012 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Getting Respect from the San Diego Press The San Diego NAACP was instrumental in persuading the local press to refrain from using racially insulting language and illustrations in its publications. In the late 1800s and early 1900s it was not uncommon to have African Americans referred to in the local news media by first name only, simply as "Aunt" or "Uncle," or a combination of both, for example "Uncle Tiberius" or "Aunt Cleo" or Nigger Dick.” The N-word was prevalent, but typically it appeared when someone was being quoted and was not a term deliberately inserted in an article to attack or demean blacks. However, there were some exceptions. Racial jokes and ethnic stereotypes and the everyday language of people pertaining to race filled these newspapers, hence San Diegans were accustomed to reading advertisements for “nigger chasers” (fireworks), “nigger babies” (licorice candy), and “nigger brown” (fashionable dress color); mention of popular plays and songs titled “Nigger Rich,” “Poor Nigger,” “The Darkies‟ Delight,” “Our Little Niggers,” “All Coons Look Alike To Me,” “The Pickaninny and the Watermelon,” and “Coontown Divorcons”; animals and pets called “Nigger” (cats and dogs), “Old Nigger” (horse owned by the Fire Department), “Nigger” the bear cub, and “Nigger Baby” (a prize-winning race horse); locations such as “Nigger Canyon,” “Nigger Jack Slough,” “Nigger Hill,” “Nigger Nate Grade” on Palomar Mountain, and “Nigger” gold mine in Julian; and other casual racist terminologies like “nigger mammies” in a masquerade party, a harbor yacht called “Nigger Boy,” “nigger shooter” (sling shot), “niggerhead” (cactus plant), and “nigger toes” (Brazil nuts). -

However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present. -

The Gold Star Mothers at Gare des Invalides In Traveling Blues by Bo Lindström and Dan Vernhettes, one paragraph deals with the events at Gare des Invalides, Paris, in 1930. Recent research has established the date given in the book to be false. Moreover, a revised version was earlier published at the Tommy Ladnier site, again with false dates and false identification of some musicians. In this new study, I have included valuable information and views provided by Konrad Nowakowski as well as his careful proofreading. Stockholm 15 October 2014 Bo Lindström The advent of the Gold Star Mothers pilgrimages After WWI, mothers and widows of fallen soldiers came to be known as “Gold Star Mothers."1 The phrase is generic and, through customary usage, it has come to designate any mother whose child has been lost in war. Grace Darling Seibold did the initial work. Her son, a volunteer pilot fighting in France did not get any initial official recognition from U.S. authorities, causing Mrs. Seibold extra grief. His body was never found. Then in June 1928, Mrs. Seibold, along with twenty-five other mothers, formed the national organization of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., incorporated on January 5, 1929 under the laws of the District of Columbia. From the start, the national Gold Star Mothers' Association lobbied for a federally sponsored pilgrimage to the cemeteries of Europe. On March 2, 1929, the U.S. Congress passed legislation authorizing funding for Gold Star Mothers and widows "to make a special pilgrimage to France .
