La Salle College High School Football: Chronicle 2006 Game 1, September 1, 2006: La Salle 29 – Plymouth-Whitemarsh 8 by Rick O’Brien, Inquirer La Salle rolls past PW behind Ashley's 134 yards La Salle running back Chris Ashley probably touched the ball a few more times than usual yesterday because of the rain. Still, he is not concerned that new head coach Drew Gordon will regularly feature a pass-happy attack on a dry turf. "It's the same offense we ran last year," Ashley said. "We usually mix things up pretty good. I know I'll get my share of carries." Showing quickness and strength, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Ashley carried 23 times for a career-high 134 yards and a touchdown as the Explorers cruised past host Plymouth-Whitemarsh, 29-8, in the nonleague opener for both teams. Drew Gordon, who took over when Joe Colistra stepped down after 21 seasons, was a prolific passer at Bishop McDevitt and Villanova. His son, Brett, was a record-setting quarterback at La Salle in the 1990s and then, following in his father's footsteps, starred at 'Nova. He is La Salle's offensive coordinator. The Explorers have stayed with the multiple-scheme offense they used last year, when Drew and Brett Gordon ran the offense on Colistra's watch. "We'd like to keep it even," Drew Gordon, 56, said. "You go with what the defense gives you." Ashley, who ran for more than 700 yards last season, capped yesterday's victory with an 18-yard TD scamper in the third quarter. He broke several tackles en route to the end zone. "He's a joy to coach," Drew Gordon said. "He's a real hard worker, never says a word. It's a shame he's not a bigger kid. He would have a lot more potential at the next level." Like Drew Gordon, Plymouth-Whitemarsh's John Staudenmayer was making his head-coaching debut. He replaced Joe Iacovitti, the Colonials' boss for 20 mostly successful seasons. "He's a good running back," Staudenmayer said of Ashley, a Chalfont resident who turned 18 today. "You need to get everybody to the ball. You can't expect to bring him down with one guy." Against the Colonials, La Salle by no means abandoned the passing game. Junior quarterback John Harrison connected on 12 of 17 throws for 97 yards and three TDs. Harrison delivered a 6-yard scoring pass to fullback Kevin Tamasitis on the visitors' first possession of the game. In the second quarter, the 5-10, 165-pounder found wideouts Jack Forster and Joe Migliarese for scores of 2 and 5 yards, respectively. Committing a myriad of mistakes in the first two quarters, Plymouth-Whitemarsh trailed by 22-0 at intermission. The Colonials turned the ball over three times and botched two snaps (one resulting in a safety) when trying to punt. The Colonials averted a shutout with just 15 seconds remaining in the game. Fullback Romie Tribble rumbled in from 4 yards out against La Salle's second-string defense. September 6, 2006, by Bill Sytsma, Neumann-Goretti website Neumann-Goretti Saints "vs" #2 LaSalle Explorers This Saturday the Saints are set to kick off against the #2 team in Southeastern Pennsylvania. La Salle has been riding high since their Thanksgiving Day upset of St. Joe’s Prep at the conclusion of the 2005 season. The Explorers continued that last week when beating Plymouth-Whitemarsh 29-8. La Salle returns most defensive starters from a year ago. And the offense is led by jr. QB John Harrison who last 1 La Salle College High School Football: Chronicle 2006 week completed 12 of 17 passes for 96 yards and 3 touchdown passes. The running game was established by Chris Ashley who took the rock 22 times for 130 yards; also catching 4 passes for another 39 yards. It's no secret that the Saints defense has to be in top shape for this one. Last week the Saints held the shifty Daryl Robinson to 16 carries for 95 yards and 1 catch for 0 yards. Daryl Robinson has been described by the Northeast Times as the "most explosive player in the PCL Red". The Saints defense held the Falcons to just 109 yards on the ground and only 12 yards passing. This Saturday night the Saints have a chance to make a loud statement in the region. Come out and support us as we take on the # 2 team in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Game 2, September 9, 2006: La Salle 40 – Neumann-Goretti 0 Explore This, Ted Silary’s website Another game comes and another victory follows for the La Salle Explorers. Backed by a large crowd at Springfield (Montco) High School, the Explorers went on to dominate the fledgling Saints. The La Salle defense was up first and set the tone early by getting the ball quickly to the offense. The offense took to the field and seemingly ran down the field with no problems, anchored by the O-line led by seniors Bill Castelberg, Chris Cabrey, and Dan “The Prez” Connors. They opened gaping holes in the Saints' line, making it easy for backs to get positive yardage. John Harrison had a near-perfect day passing the ball, throwing 8-10 for 146 yards and three scores. He continues to pick apart opposing offenses very efficiently. My main man Chris “The showstopper” Ashley continued his dominance with 57 yards on 6 rushes and 51 yards receiving on 1 reception. For all you Prep students, that is a little more than 15 yards per touch. Jack Forster caught two scores, bringing his touchdown total to three. Not only was the offense rolling on all cylinders, but the defense too seemingly pushed the Saints around with apparent ease. Led by senior D-Linemen John “The Shocker” McBurnie they held the overmatched NG to about 78 yards rushing, for about 2 yards per carry. After last season where the D-Line was much less experienced, this line is full of veterans, and McBurnie is the leader. The Neumann-Goretti Saints at times drove the ball against La Salle's backups, but were thwarted by a crucial interception inside the end zone. At the half La Salle was dominating the Saints, 33-0. Ryan “The Helmet” Cain somehow had an awful game on the field. He was 4-6 on PATs and his kickoffs were very erratic. Not gonna lie, the fellow members of the pit and I were completely taken out of the game after the end of the first half. Neumann-Goretti took to the field thinking they were going to go out there and score some points. With the starters benched, the subs seemingly dominated the game. On offense Max “MVP” Luce made another appearance to the delight of the fans. When asked how it felt to get into the game he responded, “Delicious." He and other senior Brian “The Pain Train” Trainer continued to dominate the NG Saints, who in all seriousness should stay in what I like to call “the secondary league” where they can play with teams like C-E and McDevitt and other “small” schools. The defense may have faltered a little bit, which made NG’s offense look a little more impressive than they really are. I think around the beginning of the fourth quarter it was 40-0, I am not sure of this because I put on the mascot costume on and was too busy “taking advantage” of the costume. But finally, the horn sounded ending the “game”, if you can really call it that. GAME NOTES: 2 La Salle College High School Football: Chronicle 2006 -This game in all honesty should never have been scheduled. No offense to all you Saints players/coaches/fans out there, but La Salle should be more like Prep and O’Hara and play top-level teams . But what do I know. -There was a large turnout for the Explorers fanwise. The stands were packed and there was an overflow, yet the freshmen were still too afraid to cheer. -The Pack was back…again and in full force, but we are still looking to have a load of people at the West Catholic game. It should be a tougher game, and it is at Widener. -There will be a Pit BBQ prior to the game…free food, I mean c’mon. As well as a FREE BUS!!! Game 3, September 15, 2006: La Salle 42 – West Catholic 34 Explore This, Ted Silary’s Website Another Friday night another easy victory…or so we thought. After an hour and a half long bus ride to the beautiful campus of Widener University, we arrived to see that La Salle had taken a 14 to 6 edge. All looked well for the Explorers, whose offense continued its dominance in this, the third game of the season. QB John Harrison was dominant in this game going 19-28 for 256 yards and 5 TDs. But I am getting ahead of myself, this was a back and forth slugfest was reminiscent of the mid 90’s when La Salle was run by Brett Gordon. The two teams paid no attention to defense in the first half. The Explorers had several seemingly majestic drives throughout the first quarter and looked to be well on their way to their third victory. However, they counted the Burrs of West Catholic out too early. West Catholic responded with a huge game from Dennis Shaw who was pretty unstoppable in the first half, with his quick cut back and breakaway speed.
