    La Salle College High School Football: Chronicle 2011 Game 1, September 3, 2011: La Salle 44 – North Penn 27 by Kev Hunter, The Reporter North Penn stumbles in loss to La Salle North Penn had two double-digit leads Saturday night against La Salle College High School, but the Knights could not hold on, falling 44-27 at Plymouth-Whitemarsh. The Knights had a 21-10 lead at halftime and a 27-16 lead in the third quarter, but La Salle dominated the fourth. Wide receiver Colin Buckley caught four touchdown passes from Matt Magarity, all in the second half, to make the difference for La Salle in this rematch of last year’s Eastern Final. La Salle has now defeated North Penn three times in the past two seasons. Kyle Mayfield had a 71-yard touchdown run for the Knights and also a 75-yard run to set up another score, but the North Penn secondary could not cover Buckley. His 1-yard touchdown reception put La Salle ahead for good 30-27 in the fourth, and his nine-yarder extended the margin to 37-27. Four fumbles proved costly for the Knights, including the last one, which set up Tim Wade’s clinching five-yard touchdown run for La Salle. North Penn also lost to La Salle to end last season in the state semifinals by a score of 38-35. One of the biggest events during this time is training camp. Throughout these next two weeks, we will have news about what’s going on in camp, including interviews, videos, and possibly new things that have not been done in years past. Let’s take a look at some key stories that we will cover in the next couple of weeks. 1. The arrival of QB Kyle Shurmur This has been the most talked about subject at La Salle since early this calendar year. He’s 6-foot-4 and weighs 210 pounds, and is the son of current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. This will be his first year as a starting QB and he also gets to work with offensive coordinator Brett Gordon (Shurmur will be wearing Brett’s old number on the field this season, #9 [editor’s note – right now, it seems to be number 14]). It will be interesting to see what the two-sport athlete (also a swimmer) brings to this team and if he can pick up where current Kutztown QB Chris Kane left off. Shurmur also wanted to play safety this year, but head coach Drew Gordon is not open to that idea for this year only. 2. Still, he is not concerned that new head coach Drew Gordon will regularly feature a pass-happy attack on a dry turf. "It's the same offense we ran last year," Ashley said. "We usually mix things up pretty good. I know I'll get my share of carries." Showing quickness and strength, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Ashley carried 23 times for a career-high 134 yards and a touchdown as the Explorers cruised past host Plymouth-Whitemarsh, 29-8, in the nonleague opener for both teams. Drew Gordon, who took over when Joe Colistra stepped down after 21 seasons, was a prolific passer at Bishop McDevitt and Villanova. His son, Brett, was a record-setting quarterback at La Salle in the 1990s and then, following in his father's footsteps, starred at 'Nova. He is La Salle's offensive coordinator. The Explorers have stayed with the multiple-scheme offense they used last year, when Drew and Brett Gordon ran the offense on Colistra's watch. "We'd like to keep it even," Drew Gordon, 56, said. "You go with what the defense gives you." Ashley, who ran for more than 700 yards last season, capped yesterday's victory with an 18-yard TD scamper in the third quarter.

We are proud of our participation in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league that puts as much emphasis on academic performance as it does on athletic prowess. The ACC features nine universities that rank in the top 50 according to the U.S. News & World Report and also sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament last season. This year, we look forward to bigger and even better things. With one of the youngest teams in the country, I feel as though our potential is unlimited. After going through last season together and taking our trip to Spain in August, our team is ready to take the next step as we progress toward our goal of postseason play. We need to make Conte Forum one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. We have taken steps in my first two seasons to increase the fan base, and as we continue to grow and improve, more and more people will want to show their sup- port for our team. Another goal of ours is to graduate every player in our program because we recruit players not just for four years, but for 40. Receiving a Boston College educa- tion, a Jesuit education, is one of the great predictors of success, and I have no doubt that the education received, and the experiences shared both on and off the court enrich our students’ lives forever.
