The league’s nine men’s head coaches, along with a select media panel, picked the all-Conference teams, as well as the coach, player, newcomer, freshman, sixth man and defensive awards. BYU head coach Dave Rose and San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher shared MWC Coach of the Year honors, while BYU’s Jimmer Fredette was a unanimous selection as the Player of the Year. Additionally, BYU’s Jackson Emery garnered Defensive Player of the Year accolades, New Mexico’s Drew Gordon was selected as the Newcomer of the Year, New Mexico’s Kendall Williams was chosen as the Freshman of the Year and Colorado State’s Pierce Hornung received the Sixth Man of the Year award. Eight student-athletes are repeat selections to the all-Conference list in 2010-11, while the remaining seven make their first appearance on the team. BYU’s Jimmer Fredette becomes the first three-time, first-team honoree in the 12-year history of the Mountain West Conference, while New Mexico’s Dairese Gary and San Diego State’s Kawhi Leonard received first-team accolades for the second straight season. Rose collected his third MWC coaching honor after guiding the Cougars to their sixth Mountain West regular-season title and fourth under Rose. BYU posted a 14-2 record in Conference play this season, matching a school record for most MWC wins. Fisher received his first MWC coaching award after leading the Aztecs to their second Mountain West regular-season crown. San Diego State set a program record for MWC victories en route to a 14-2 finish in Conference play in 2010-11. Fredette, a 6-2, 195-pound senior guard, set a Mountain West Conference single-season record for most points in league play (502), while his 31.4 scoring average was second-best in MWC history. In addition, the Glens Falls, N.Y., native led the MWC in free throw percentage (.901) and made 3-pointers (3.6), while ranking second in minutes played (36.8), third in 3-point field goal percentage (.429), fourth in assists (4.3), tied for fourth in steals (1.5) and eighth in field goal percentage (.439) against MWC opponents. Emery, a 6-3, 190-pound senior guard from Alpine, Utah, averaged a league-best 2.7 steals per game against MWC opponents in 2010-11. His 43 steals in Conference play set a league record for most by a senior and rank second all-time on the league’s single- season charts. Gordon, a 6-9, 245-pound forward/center, was one of two players to average a double-double in Conference play this season, ranking second in rebounding (11.8) and ninth in scoring (13.9). His 11.8 rebounding average in league play set a MWC record by a junior and ranks third all-time on the single-season list. The San Jose, Calif., product was also second in the Conference in field goal percentage (.556) and fourth in blocked shots (22) in MWC action. Williams, a 6-3, 170-pound forward from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was the league’s top freshman scorer this season, averaging 10.1 points in league play. He also averaged 3.7 assists while registering a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio against Conference opponents, ranking sixth in the league in both categories. Hornung, a 6-5, 200-pound sophomore forward, averaged 4.3 points and 5.4 rebounds off the bench for the Rams in Conference play in 2010-11. Hailing from Arvada, Calif., Hornung shot 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the field, while also tallying 20 steals, 11 blocked shots and 10 assists in MWC action. The Knights had a 21-10 lead at halftime and a 27-16 lead in the third quarter, but La Salle dominated the fourth. Wide receiver Colin Buckley caught four touchdown passes from Matt Magarity, all in the second half, to make the difference for La Salle in this rematch of last year’s Eastern Final. La Salle has now defeated North Penn three times in the past two seasons. Kyle Mayfield had a 71-yard touchdown run for the Knights and also a 75-yard run to set up another score, but the North Penn secondary could not cover Buckley. His 1-yard touchdown reception put La Salle ahead for good 30-27 in the fourth, and his nine-yarder extended the margin to 37-27. Four fumbles proved costly for the Knights, including the last one, which set up Tim Wade’s clinching five-yard touchdown run for La Salle. North Penn also lost to La Salle to end last season in the state semifinals by a score of 38-35. One of the biggest events during this time is training camp. Throughout these next two weeks, we will have news about what’s going on in camp, including interviews, videos, and possibly new things that have not been done in years past. Let’s take a look at some key stories that we will cover in the next couple of weeks. 1. The arrival of QB Kyle Shurmur This has been the most talked about subject at La Salle since early this calendar year. He’s 6-foot-4 and weighs 210 pounds, and is the son of current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. This will be his first year as a starting QB and he also gets to work with offensive coordinator Brett Gordon (Shurmur will be wearing Brett’s old number on the field this season, #9 [editor’s note – right now, it seems to be number 14]). It will be interesting to see what the two-sport athlete (also a swimmer) brings to this team and if he can pick up where current Kutztown QB Chris Kane left off. Shurmur also wanted to play safety this year, but head coach Drew Gordon is not open to that idea for this year only. 2. Still, he is not concerned that new head coach Drew Gordon will regularly feature a pass-happy attack on a dry turf. "It's the same offense we ran last year," Ashley said. "We usually mix things up pretty good. I know I'll get my share of carries." Showing quickness and strength, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Ashley carried 23 times for a career-high 134 yards and a touchdown as the Explorers cruised past host Plymouth-Whitemarsh, 29-8, in the nonleague opener for both teams. Drew Gordon, who took over when Joe Colistra stepped down after 21 seasons, was a prolific passer at Bishop McDevitt and Villanova. His son, Brett, was a record-setting quarterback at La Salle in the 1990s and then, following in his father's footsteps, starred at 'Nova. He is La Salle's offensive coordinator. The Explorers have stayed with the multiple-scheme offense they used last year, when Drew and Brett Gordon ran the offense on Colistra's watch. "We'd like to keep it even," Drew Gordon, 56, said. We are proud of our participation in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league that puts as much emphasis on academic performance as it does on athletic prowess. The ACC features nine universities that rank in the top 50 according to the U.S. News & World Report and also sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament last season. This year, we look forward to bigger and even better things. With one of the youngest teams in the country, I feel as though our potential is unlimited. After going through last season together and taking our trip to Spain in August, our team is ready to take the next step as we progress toward our goal of postseason play. We need to make Conte Forum one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. We have taken steps in my first two seasons to increase the fan base, and as we continue to grow and improve, more and more people will want to show their sup- port for our team. Another goal of ours is to graduate every player in our program because we recruit players not just for four years, but for 40. Receiving a Boston College educa- tion, a Jesuit education, is one of the great predictors of success, and I have no doubt that the education received, and the experiences shared both on and off the court enrich our students’ lives forever.
