TALENT MANAGERS REPORT This season Gippsland Power won 6 games, lost 12, and finished 9th on the ladder. We had a slow start to the program losing our opening 7 games and 9 of our first 10. However we turned things around by winning 5 of our last 8 games including 4 of our last 5and improving markedly as the season progressed. The Club continues to successfully nurture Gippsland’s young football talent and we are delighted that xx of our players were taken in the Nov. 25 AFL National Draft. There will be sizeable player turnover again in 2017 with 22 of last year’s squad of 40 moving on. This year, together with Bendigo Pioneers, Gippsland Power were chosen as the first clubs in a pilot program to intergrate an U/18 girls TAC program on the same basis as the U/18 boys. The program has been set up to provide females with an elite pathway into the newly established AFL Womens League. Our girls academy now boasts 40 of the most talented 13-18 year-old players from all over Gippsland. Although we are in our infancy, the development of our girls over a short period of time has been outstanding. I thank our 2016 third year TAC Cup coach Leigh Brown who once again did an outstanding job in coaching and preparing our players for the future. Leigh has a strong relationship with the boys and with all of our staff members and he expertly managed our list throughout the season. He also made a vital contribution in his third season in the Development Manager role. I am also most appreciative of retiring Club Secretary Stan Morgan’s office administrative support and match day assistance over the last 5 years. I am thankful for the contributions afforded by our TAC Cup assistant coaches Scott McDougal, Rhett McLennan and Peter Mongta. A big thank-you also to our professional medical team led by Club Doctor Wayne Thompson, physiotherapist Andrew Annear, dietitian Rebecca Gallo, our head trainer Kevin Evans and trainers Kevin Curran, Tamika Fasoli, Mark Harisisiuk and Neil Whitelaw and our masseurs Mandy Ellis and Mazz Jones. I am additionally most grateful for the contributions from our fitness advisor Josh Milner, rehabilitation advisor Matthew Ross and chaplain David Hobbs. Gippsland Power’s match day staff are vital to the smooth running of our TAC Cup games and I gratefully acknowledge the roles of team manager Alan Campbell , property steward Robbie Ross, runners Josh Milner and Alan Campbell, statisticians Bryan and Margaret Mitchell, social media officer Kate Mitchell, timekeeper Barbara Auldist, facilities Roger Knowles, electronic scoreboard attendant Malcolm Neal, gatekeeper Mary Smith and umpires escort Martin Harrison. Congratulations to Josh Patullo who was named in the 2016 TAC Cup team of the year and also won the Gippsland Power Best & Fairest award. Gippsland Power’s Ben Ainsworth and Will Leslie played for Vic.Country in the NAB AFL National U/18 Championships series conducted between June 4 and June 29 in Victoria, South Australia and West Australia. Vic. Metro won the Div.1Championships and were victorious in each each of their 4 games. Vic.Country failed to register a win in the series. Undefeated NSW/ACT won the Div. 2 Championships. Kyle Dunkley, Xavier Duursma, Nick Lowden, Irving Mosquito and Kyle Reid.represented Gippsland power in the NAB AFL National U/16 championships, conducted between June 26 and July 8 on the Gold Coast. South Australia won the Championships and were undefeated in their 3 games. Vic.Country won 1 of their 3 games. The Gippsland Power U/16 & U/15 boys squads remain a vital element of our player development program. This season they respectively competed again in the Vic Country U/16 Championships at Morwell and Bendigo from March 28 to April 10 and the V/Line Cup U/15 Championships in the Latrobe Valley from Sept. 26 to Sept. 29. The U/16’s had a win and 2 losses and finished 4th. Our U/15 Div.1 team won both of their allotted games whilst Div.2 had a win and a loss. My thanks to U/16 coach Dean Duursma and U/15 coaches Rob. Reid (Div.1) and Rick Galea (Div.2) for their excellent coaching contributions and for preparing the boys for the development pathway. The Gippsland Power girls representative side competed in the U/17 Youth Girls V/Line Cup carnival in the Latrobe Valley in the same week as the U/15 schoolboys teams. The girls lost both of their matches. Gippsland Power also fielded a side in the Feb.-March U/18 Youth Girls Challenge series and won 2 of their 5 matches. I am grateful for the contributions of time, effort and expertise afforded by our respective Youth Girls U/17 & U/18 coaches Nikki Schroeter and Scott McDougal and their assistant coaches Natasha Bennet, Shayla Marsh and Kelly O’Neill (U/17) and Troy Makepeace and Brett Sherriff ( U/18). Off the field, the on-going assistance and co-operation afforded to Gippsland Power by Latrobe City Council is outstanding and I am most appreciative of their support. Thank you to our co-tenants the Morwell Football Netball Club and Carmel Gniel from the Morwell ladies committee for running the canteen at our home matches and during the V/Line Cup. I also acknowledge the co-operation we get from all of the leagues in Gippsland and their respective affiliate clubs. Gippsland Power is extremely fortunate to have outstanding sponsorship support and I cannot thank each of our sponsors enough for their generosity. Whilst I particularly express my gratitude to our 3 major funders ENGIE, Colin Watson Motors and Warragul Linen Service I am also most grateful for the financial assistance from all of our contributors. A list of all of our sponsors is included in this Annual Report and I urge you all to support them where possible. AFL Vic. and Gippsland Power and the other statewide U/18 competition teams are indebted to the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) for their generous sponsorship of the competition and I would like to acknowledge our appreciation. We are also greatly appreciative of the guidance and assistance given to our Club by AFL Vic and their senior officers Steven Reaper, John Hook and Leon Harris and their staff. We thank them for their commitment to the promotion and development of the game. In closing I want to particularly thank the parents and players of all the boys in all age groups who were involved with Gippsland Power this year. I know that our programs simply could not work without your co-operation and your huge commitments of time and travel. To all the TAC Cup players and parents who are leaving us this year I hope you will take some lasting memories with you and I wish you every success for the future. The boys won 4 of their last 5 games and were impressive in turning their early season form around. At no point in the season did I have reason to question the boys work rate, commitment or attack on the ball. Congratulations to Ben Ainsworth who was taken at pick 4 by Gold Coast in the November 25 AFL national draft. Along with everyone at Gippsland Power I wish Ben a long and successful AFL career. I thoroughly enjoyed my third season working with the 2016 group and I would like to thank Peter Francis for his continued support throughout.
