Wildman Adviser Department of History PREFACE In 1862 young Russians turned for leadership to Dmitrii Pisarev, a young radical literary critic who was rapidly becoming known for his extremist attitudes—a set of views that he aptly labeled nihilism. Because so many young Pussians accepted Pisarev's views through the next half decade, his nihilism became not m erely a radical pattern of thought, but also a social movement. Behind Pisarev's ideas and his following lay an intensifying desire on the part of young Russians to institute widespread social change. This dissertation places the nihilist movement--Russia's Pisarevshchina--in its social context. It examines nihilists, their ideas, and their society. In doing so, it concentrates on interrelationships between the movement and social developments external to it. It examines the social dynamics that resulted in the nihilist movement's dramatic growth. Chapter I delineates this study's scope andapproach. Chapter II presents an overview of nihilism to describe clearly the trends that characterized Russia's radical movement through the I860's. The over­ view not only describes the sequence of events that led to Pisarev's emergence as a radical leader, but also places nihilism in its intellectual context by discussing the similarities and differences between Pisarev's ideas and the ideas developed by his predecessors and contemporaries. Rather than use a chronological arrangement, the succeeding chapters use a topical arrangement to express the interrelationships between nihilist thought and social developments. The interrelationships discussed in Chapters III through VII are diagrammed in Appendix C. Chapter III examines the lives of individuals who were nihilists during the 1860's. The purpose of this chapter is to answer such questions as: Were the nihilists old or young? Were they privileged or unprivileged? Were they well-educated or only partially educated? Determining the nihilists' group characteristics points to specific social and intellectual developments separate from the nihilist move­ ment that influenced these radicals' lives. Thus, through the nihilists' group characteristics, interrelationships between the nihilist movement and specific social and intellectual developments external to it emerge. These interrelationships are examined in the chapters that follow. Chapter IV examines the educated elite during the period immediately preceding the emergence of nihilist thought, and concludes that a growing interest in the sciences developed within this group—the group from which nihilists were to emerge. Chapter V shows how Pisarev, his colleagues, and the students who became their followers used science to create the nihilist pattern of thought. iii Chapter VI parallels Chapters III, IV, and V in time, and contrasts the existing social system's distrust of science with the nihilists' more positive inclinations. Chapter VII interrelates the developments discussed in Chapters III, IV, and V with those discussed in Chapter VI. It shows how the nihilists' positive use of science clashed with the negative attitudes prevalent in the existing social system to give rise to nihilism: a radical social movement grounded in science. Unless indicated otherwise, the translations in this dissertation are my own. Bibliographical citations were transliterated according to the Library of Congress system. In transliterating nineteenth-century citations, spelling was changed where necessary to conform to contem­ porary Russian orthography. Names were spelled as they would be spelled in Russian; although certain names, such as Nicholas I, Alexander II, and Alexander Herzen, were kept in their more familiar Anglicized forms.     Tolstoy and Zola: Trains and Missed Connections Nina Lee Bond Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Nina Lee Bond All rights reserved ABSTRACT Tolstoy and Zola: Trains and Missed Connections Nina Lee Bond ŖTolstoy and Zolaŗ juxtaposes the two writers to examine the evolution of the novel during the late nineteenth century. The juxtaposition is justified by the literary critical debates that were taking place in Russian and French journals during the 1870s and 1880s, concerning Tolstoy and Zola. In both France and Russia, heated arguments arose over the future of realism, and opposing factions held up either Tolstoyřs brand of realism or Zolařs naturalism as more promising. This dissertation uses the differences between Tolstoy and Zola to make more prominent a commonality in their respective novels Anna Karenina (1877) and La Bête humaine (1890): the railways. But rather than interpret the railways in these two novels as a symbol of modernity or as an engine for narrative, I concentrate on one particular aspect of the railway experience, known as motion parallax, which is a depth cue that enables a person to detect depth while in motion. Stationary objects close to a travelling train appear to be moving faster than objects in the distance, such as a mountain range, and moreover they appear to be moving backward. By examining motion parallax in both novels, as well as in some of Tolstoyřs other works, The Kreutzer Sonata (1889) and The Death of Ivan Il'ich (1886), this dissertation attempts to address an intriguing question: what, if any, is the relationship between the advent of trains and the evolution of the novel during the late nineteenth century? Motion parallax triggers in a traveler the sensation of going backward even though one is travelling forward.

During the last part of his life, his towering personality dominated the intellectual climate of Russia and the world to an unprecedented degree. His work, moreover, continues to be studied and admired. His views on art, literature, morals, politics, and life have never ceased to influence writers and thinkers all over the world. Such interest over the years has produced an immense quantity of books and articles about Tolstoy, his ideas, and his work. In Russia alone their number exceeded ten thousand some time ago (more than 5,500 items were published in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1957) and con­ tinues to rise.

    Russian Military Culture during the Reigns of Catherine II and Paul I, 1762-1801 by Eugene Miakinkov A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta ©Eugene Miakinkov, 2015 Abstract This study explores the shape and development of military culture during the reign of Catherine II. Next to the institutions of the autocracy and the Orthodox Church, the military occupied the most important position in imperial Russia, especially in the eighteenth century. Rather than analyzing the military as an institution or a fighting force, this dissertation uses the tools of cultural history to explore its attitudes, values, aspirations, tensions, and beliefs. Patronage and education served to introduce a generation of young nobles to the world of the military culture, and expose it to its values of respect, hierarchy, subordination, but also the importance of professional knowledge. Merit is a crucial component in any military, and Catherine’s military culture had to resolve the tensions between the idea of meritocracy and seniority. All of the above ideas and dilemmas were expressed in a number of military texts that began to appear during Catherine’s reign. It was during that time that the military culture acquired the cultural, political, and intellectual space to develop – a space I label the “military public sphere”. This development was most clearly evident in the publication, by Russian authors, of a range of military literature for the first time in this era. The military culture was also reflected in the symbolic means used by the senior commanders to convey and reinforce its values in the army.

    I Darwin, Dostoevsky, and Russia’s Radical Youth David Bethea and Victoria Thorstensson The period of the 1860s was one of the most volatile in the history of Russian culture. Normally cited as chief flashpoints of the turmoil are the Reform Manifesto of 1861 liberating the serfs and the heated debate generated in the periodic press by the new legislation’s less-than-perfect implementation. On a practical level, the most pressing issue of the day was how to combine freedom for the serfs (krest’iane), including a path to eventual ownership of the land they worked, with economic sustainability for the nobility (dvorianstvo), including sources of cheap labor needed to run their estates in the future. At the same time, the ideological orientations at the center of much discussion showed a larger thrust and counterthrust, one aimed at capturing the correct notion of “progress”— with all that word entailed—of Russian history at this turning point. It is this second, more capacious discursive arc that permeates the cluster of classic literary texts defining the decade, from Turgenev’s traditional liberal viewpoint in Fathers and Children (Ottsy i deti, 1862), to Chernyshevsky’s radical reposing of the youth movement’s character and aspirations in What Is to Be Done? (Chto delat’?, 1863), to Dostoevsky’s deconstruction of Chernyshevsky’s utilitarianism and “rational egoism” (razumnyi egoizm) in Notes from Underground (Zapiski iz podpol’ia, 1864) and Crime and Punishment (Prestuplenie i nakazanie, 1866). 36 David Bethea and Victoria Thorstensson The idea of progress, or the right way forward, written into these texts thematically was also mapped onto the plot of generational transition.

    French in the education of the nobility: Mikhail Shcherbatov’s letters to his son Dmitrii Introduction Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov Prince Mikhail Mikhailovich Shcherbatov (1733-90) was a member of a large and ancient noble family that claimed to be descended from Riurik, the Norseman who, according to the Russian chronicles, had founded the Russian state in 862. One of Mikhail’s forebears, Ivan Andreevich Shcherbatov, who happened to become his father-in-law (and who also features in this corpus of primary source texts), had served as a diplomat in London in the reigns of Anne and Elizabeth. Mikhail’s father had seen military service in the wars of Peter I (the Great) against the Turks and the Swedes and had risen to the rank of Major-General. Mikhail himself, as a deputy elected by the nobility of the District of Iaroslavl, played a prominent role in the deliberations of the Legislative Commission set up in 1767 by Catherine II (the Great) with the supposed aim of drawing up a new code of laws and, even more ambitiously, fundamental political laws informed by the ideas of western thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment, above all Montesquieu.1 Resentful of the recent elevation of commoners such as Peter’s favourite, Prince Aleksandr Menshikov (1673-1729), Shcherbatov insisted on the pre-eminence of the high nobility of ancient lineage and made every effort to halt the rise of the newer service gentry. He accordingly opposed the meritocratic principle which is embodied in the Table of Ranks that Peter introduced in 1722 and which was favoured as a criterion for admission to and status in the nobility by many notable Russian writers and thinkers of the eighteenth century, including the satirist and diplomat Antiokh Kantemir and, in Shcherbatov’s own age, the dramatist Denis Fonvizin (1744 or 1745-92).

Tartu, 2014 FORMULATING THE “RUSSIAN IDEA”: RUSSIAN WRITERS AND THE NATIONALIZATION OF PATRIOTISM DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR (MAIKOV, GONCHAROV, PISEMSKY) ALEXEY VDOVIN Until recent times, studies of the “patriotic elation” that swept up many Russian writers and poets during the Crimean War (1853–1856) confined themselves to determining how sincere various authors were in their expressions of Russo- philia. Following studies by historians and, in particular, O. Maiorova, the issue was formulated in a fundamentally new way: what were the implications and consequences of the powerful wave of patriotism in Russian journalistic writing and poetry during the Crimean War in terms of constructing a new type of identity in the public realm? From such a perspective, the focus of attention for the literary historian becomes less the rhetoric of elation in odes on the tri- umphs of Russian arms or, conversely, the rhetoric of prognosticating the im- minent demise of autocracy and the rebirth of Russia, and more the ideological constructs of a new community that were formulated in such writings. I am referring to appeals to the idea of “Russian” and “Russianness”. What were the foundations of this Russianness in the views of writers? To what historical nar- ratives did they appeal? How was this Russianness defined? How did writers conceive of the relation between Russians and “others” (East, West)? I propose to examine these questions using the polemical writings of several well-known writers, which have never been considered all together as a dialogue regarding the problem of “Russian civilization” or the “Russian idea”, as it was first called by Dostoevsky in a letter to Apollon Maikov in the spring of 1856.

Kuter Kuban State University, Russia Abstract The purpose of the paper is to research into the characteristic features of the evolution of ac- counting education in Russia, to identify the main stages of this historical process and their time limits. The formation of accounting education is considered as a purposeful process be- ing the integral part of the reforms of Peter the Great, and in which the tsar himself played a leading role. It is proved that the training was carried out mainly by means of practical study abroad and mentoring. The story of Ivan Thames, who taught accounting to the youth, as well as of Petr Rychkov, who became the author of the first Russian publication concerning ac- counting, is used as an illustration. The first cases of the use of the adopted in Russia account- ing terminology are presented. The forms of accounting books, applied in the 18th century, are given. The establishment of the first Russian commercial colleges is presented. The character- istic features of the manuals of accounting used in these establishments are discussed. The paper contains historical facts that can be of interest to those who are interested in the history of Russia.
