• Team Tifton Gazette Coffee and Biscuits Sale Biscuits $1 and coffee/juice $0.50 In this life, gifts come to us in different packages—sometimes HOPE wrapped with paper and ribbon, sometimes in relationships, some- PERSONIFIED times in opportunities. Donna Miller was a special gift to many of us. Though she was brought to Tifton to begin a career at ABAC, she made a dramatic impact on our community in many ways. One of her most passionate efforts was sharing her HOPE through the American Cancer Society (ACS). After Recovering from breast cancer in 1993, Donna launched a steady stream of initiatives and personal commitment to ease the healthcare journey of others, expanding the work of the American Cancer Society in Tifton and all of Georgia. Donna began her volunteerism with the ACS through our local Relay For Life in 1995. Then it was a much smaller event, yet showed such promise. Donna was the Luminary Chairperson for several years and was actually the one who brought us the ‘Torch Ceremony’ idea. This, of course, has transformed our Luminary Service. Donna served as the Survivorship Chairperson for 3 years and Advocacy Chairperson for 3 years. Through Relay Donna learned of other programs and services that the ACS had to offer. She became a Reach To Recovery volunteer beginning in 1995. This program was one where she was personally guiding and encouraging women with breast cancer in Tifton and surrounding counties. In 2004 she became a Certified Reach to Recovery Trainer to train more volunteers in this program and empower women to help one another. Donna was an individual advocate for local, state and federal legislation to prevent cancer and to expand research and development She was also one of nine Georgians chosen as Community Ambassadors for the American Cancer Society and then named Georgia’s Lead Ambassador in 2007, mobilizing, leading and maintaining teams to impact state and federal cancer decisions. Donna was also appointed Chairperson of the American Cancer Society State Public Policy Advisory Committee. Through her 13+ years of volunteering with the ACS, Donna received many local and area awards. One of her most treasured was the Terese Lasser Award that she received in 2007. This was a national award and was for her work with breast cancer patients and the Reach To Recovery program. Lasser was the one who started this program in 1952. Donna Miller was a true friend. Her heart and soul were evident to all around her. She made you laugh and shared your tears. She walked beside you through your journey of life. She was passionate about her work with the American Cancer Society and made a tremendous impact in our community, our state and more importantly our hearts. Donna was a perfect example of HOPE! No matter what obstacle she came upon, she found a way to overcome it. She could always show us her HOPE. This year, the Relay For Life of Tift County will show the world our HOPE while honoring our Donna Miller. The 2009 event will be named in memory of Donna Miller! Join us in Showing Your Hope and make Donna proud!
