Will Sports include all the forms of competitive physical activity and games which has been organized with the aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to the participants as well as entertainment to spectators. It is usually governed by a set of rules or customs, which serve to ensure fair competition, and allow consistent adjudication of the winner. Dr.SmritiratanTripathy Organizing Secretary Organizing Committee & Assistant Professor of Physiology Berhampore Girls’ College The Development and challenges of Physical Education in Academic Set up Dr. Nita Bandyopadhyay Head, Director and Ex-officio Department of Physical Education University of Kalyani Physical Education has existed since ancient times. Evolution of human life started with the movement. Human beings have been very active and creative by nature and physical activity has been part of their life all along since evolution. Around 16th century educationists were interested to develop not only strength and military skills but also a beautiful and graceful body, as the revived understanding of Greek life and culture penetrated the Universities. The concept of Physical Education for national health and fitness gained momentum in England, France and USA during early 19th century and was made a compulsory subjects in school system. The concept of introduction of Physical Education/culture/exercise in school system was initiated by the British ruler in India during last decade of the 19th century. During early 20th century detail plan was prepared and for imparting effective programme Physical Education teachers training institutions were established. First such College was established during 1920 at Madras Y.M.C.A. In most of the advanced countries Physical Education has developed and expanded during the last 40 year or so in two principal ways: 1) It is increasingly an academic discipline though it retains a strong professional context and 2) Via the dramatically enhanced societal awareness of the optimal health/fitness role of structured physical activity programmes that now extend well beyond the traditional educational setting. In India development of Physical Education was slow but almost in conformity with international understanding and scenario. Till independence and even during formative years after independence main focus of Physical Education was on drill and marching etc. i.e. Military oriented “Physical Education” prevailed in the country. During early twentieth century the concept of Physical Education took the leading role and accordingly more emphasis was given to develop variety of skill in different games and sports in Physical Education teachers training institutes as well as in other academic and societal settings. During eighties health scientists all over the world became interested to investigate the perspective of health and its implication in life style. During last decade of 20th century UNO, UNESCO and many other international organizations became interested to develop Physical Education through adoption of basic principles by the nation states and urged to develop scrupulously “Physical Education and Sports for quality of life” “Sports for all” was popular slogan during this period. With this background 21st century has brought before us a challenge for perspective development of Physical Education and sports. This is a challenge because increased leisure time, increased discretionary income, urbanization, viewing television, labour saving gadgets, automobiles etc. have conspired to an inactive lifestyle among the present generation, resulting in increased hypo kinetic diseases. The other aspects of challenge are to develop Physical Education not only as professional carrier oriented subject but also as an academic discipline with other regular subjects in the University system. The development of Physical Education as an academic discipline has been a resultant of the enhanced role of science and technology and research in higher education. Profession of Physical Education now requires more sound information and theories upon which to develop and administer its programme and offers a number of special area and subjects such as Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Sports Psychology and Sports Sociology which are now well accepted as sub-disciplines. There are many such allied areas which are now widely accepted as sub-disciplines in the profession of Physical Education, for e.g. Sports Management, Sports Medicine, Sports Journalism and communication, Sports Technology and Computer application, Sports Marketing etc. There are various kinds of benefits to young people who actively and regularly participate in different kind of activities of Physical education. In the context of youth development, sports participation contributes to the young people’s psychological, emotional, physical, social, spiritual development, as well as promotes their healthy lifestyles, developmental competencies, citizenship, creative and vocational skills, youth identity, human values, interaction and adult- youth relationship. Physical activity is essential for youth’s optimal development in skill, improved cardiovascular fitness and weight control, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and bone structure. Physical education therefore benefit youth in several ways: 1. Development towards the highest possible level to excel at the top levels of competitive championships, tournaments and professional sports. 2. Develop them psychologically, mentally, physically, and emotionally. 3. Contribute to their academic success. 4. Develop their positive assets towards positive youth development and 5.
