04 Days Academic Leadership Training Program

Aligarh Muslim University Murshidabad Centre

Aligarh Muslim University Murshidabad Centre organized a 04 Days Academic Leadership Training Program for Vice-Chancellors, Pro Vice-Chancellors, Directors, Deans, Chairpersons, Head of the Departments, College Principals and Vice-Principals from September 10-13, 2018. The program was organized under the aegis of Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM), AMU, Aligarh under the scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.

Dr. Amir Jafar, Director In-charge, AMU Murshidabad Centre welcomed the resources persons and the participants in the inaugural session. He said that AMU Murshidabad Centre offers a learning environment that is conducive to overall personality development. He also informed that very senior academicians will deliberate over the issues which leaders of higher educational institutions face on daily basis. Acknowledging the fact that academic leadership is something which cannot be taught in classrooms, Dr. Jafar pointed that discussions and reflections over the next four days of the program will polish and improve our leadership skills.

Course Coordinator of the program, Dr. Syed Atif Jilani, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration gave a detailed introduction of the program and conducted the de-briefing session. Dr. Nigamananda Biswas, Associate Professor in Business Administration Department gave a detailed overview of different lectures of the program and also presented an introduction of the eminent resource persons who engaged sessions on various topics related to the development of leadership skills. A documentary on Aligarh Muslim University highlighting University’s role in nation building was also screened in the inaugural function.

On day one, Prof. Mohd. Muzammil, Ex-Vice Chancellor Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra and Ex-Vice Chancellor, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly covered issues related to ‘Why and Wherefore of Teacher Training for Academic Leadership in Higher Education’, and ‘Governance of Higher Education in India and Interface with Regulatory Bodies’. The same day, in another session, Prof. Malayendu Saha, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Kalyani University and Chairman, West Bengal Entrance Examination Board discussed ‘High Impact Practices for Student Success’ with the participants.

On September 11, Prof. Muzammil, engaged sessions on ‘Financing of Higher Education for Quality Assurance in Institutions of Higher Education’ and ‘New Challenges in Higher Education’, which were well received by the participants. Prof. Saha engaged two sessions on ‘Developing Research Capacity and Strategic Planning’ and highlighted the need of having more rigorous research output from college and university teachers.

On September 12, Prof. Mohammad Khalid Azam, Ex-Dean, Faculty of Management Studies & Research and Ex-Chairman, Department of Business Administration, AMU Aligarh delineated on ‘Leadership Strategies for Better Performance Management’ talking about the intricacies involved in

developing leadership strategies. Through statistical game analysis, Prof. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee, Director, IQAC & Head, Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar helped the participants in developing their own leadership skill profile.

On the last of the program, Prof. Khalid Azam and Prof. Bhattacharjee engaged one session each on ‘Internationalization of Higher Education’ and ‘Statistical Games for Identifying the Leadership Quality in You’, respectively. Prof. Khalid Azam argued that in coming years, higher educational field will see a massive transformation and there would be increased competition from foreign players. He said that it is the responsibility of those who are at the helm of different colleges and departments to take necessary steps for improving the overall quality of education in their respective institutions.

Before the Valedictory function, feedback was taken from the participants for each session and for the areas of improvement in organizing such programs. Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee, Member of Parliament, Jangipur and Member, AMU Court, graced the Valedictory Function as the Chief Guest. Dr. Mukherjee expressed his happiness that AMU Murshidabad Centre has come up with this kind of high profile program despite the resource constraints it faces. He assured his full support and cooperation with the administration of the Centre for any kind of developmental work in future.

Sharing his experiences during the 4 days of the program, Dr. Sukamal Deb, Director, KVIC Guwahati, said that he had a very unique experience of learning in the program. Dr. Akhtar Hossain, Head of Department, Department of Education, Nabagram ACK College also shared his experiences during the program. Dr. Rashid Usman Ansari, AMU Murshidabad Centre; Dr. Tinni Goswami, St. Xavier’s College; Mr. Md. Sablul Haque, DNC College; and Mr. Abu Kalam Alberuni, Siddhinath Mahavidyalaya, appreciated the efforts of all the resources persons who engaged different thought provoking sessions in the program.

Towards the conclusion of Valedictory function, certificates were distributed to all successful participants. Dr. Nigamananda Biswas proposed the vote of thanks, especially thanking Prof. Abdul Rahim Kidwai, Project Coordinator, CALEM, AMU, Aligarh for granting this program to AMU Murshidabad Centre. He also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Amir Jafar, Director In-charge AMU Murshidabad Centre, Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Assistant Director, UGC-HRDC, AMU, Dr. Syed Atif Jilani, Course Coordinator, participants, teaching and non-teaching staff of AMU Murshidabad Centre and student volunteers. The program concluded with the singing of AMU tarana and group photography session.
