I} 'f ,IJ If \\.., to,: <, (' BURGLARY PREVENTION IN WASHINGTON Barbara Hadley Chri s t~ebster Preface In the last three years, in the State of Washington, the Law and Justice Planning Office (LJPO, now called the Law and Justice Planning Division) has funded many crime prevention projects aimed at reducing the incidence of burglary. It is therefore appropriate that at some point we should address the questions: what do we know about burglary prevention? and how can we use this knowledge? It is to the first question that we address the body of this paper. Our }'esearch offers here th~ relevant findings of both state (Washington) and national evaluations regarding burglary reduction as one strategy in crime prevention. It is our hope that the second question above will be addressed by the readers of this report. There are possibilities for planners, evaluators, and administrators. We propose that this report can be a useful tool in aiding decision-makers and practitioners in any of these roles. Concerning the state projects, this report presents a general description of each of the program 'types, the objectives that can and are used to evaluate them, alld some comments about thei r success or fai lure in the State of Washington.
