Previous meetings • Juventus won home and away when the sides met in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League quarter-final. • Samuel Umtiti's own goal gave Juve a 2-1 second-leg win in Turin (and 3-1 success overall) after Jimmy Briand had equalised for Rémi Garde's Lyon following Andrea Pirlo's early strike. • Antonio Conte's Juve had seized the advantage in France when Leonardo Bonucci scored with five minutes remaining. They went out to SL Benfica in the semi-final, 2-1 on aggregate. • The line-ups at the Juventus Stadium on 10 April 2014 were: Juve: Buffon, Martín Cáceres, Bonucci, Isla, Chiellini, Asamoah, Pirlo, Vidal (Pogba 75), Marchisio, Tévez (Giovinco 78), Vučinić (Llorente 59). In last season's group stage they did not concede a goal at home, beating Sevilla and Manchester City FC. • In the round of 16 the two-time European champions drew 2-2 at home to Bayern, succumbing 4-2 away in extra time. Lyon • The French side began their 14th campaign with a 3-0 home win against Dinamo Zagreb before a 1-0 defeat at Sevilla.

This paper presents a framework for evaluating the financial consequences of player transfers as seen from a club’s perspective. To this end, an objective player rating model is designed based on players’ contribution towards creating a positive goals differential for their team. A regression model is then applied to predict match outcomes as a function of the players involved in a match. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is used to predict the final league standings and the financial gains obtained as a function of sporting success. The framework is illustrated on player transfers from the 2014-2015 English Premier League season. Keywords: association, football, rating, simulation, regression 1. First, in March, at the next ordinary UEFA Congress, the terms of six members of the UEFA Executive Committee come to an end, three of whom are not standing for re-election. In addition, the seat that has been vacant since the death of Mathieu Sprengers has to be filled, as do two additional seats, giving the Executive Committee an unprecedented injection of new blood. Then in May, the current club competition cycle concludes. In the UEFA Champions League, it will be the last final to be played on a Wednesday, thereby ending a tradition that dates back to the creation of the competition. In the UEFA Cup, it will be the last final ever under that name before the competition becomes the UEFA Europa League and takes on a brand-new format. This year also heralds the end of an era for the UEFA Women’s Cup, which is set to change format and be linked to the UEFA Champions League, with the finals of the two competitions to take place in future in the same city during the same week.
