Offering limited enrollment, the one-week sessions are filling up quickly. Rock & Roll Summer Boot Camp is the ideal program for musicians ages 7-18 who want an immersive summer day camp experience in a true rock & roll environment. Students will spend one full week working in a hands-on-atmosphere honing their performance and ensemble expertise as well as learning valuable music industry related skills. A typical week includes classes in Music Theory, Classic Rock Music Appreciation, a crash course in Live Performance, Elements of Song Writing & Composition, Studio and Rehearsal time, Recording Sessions, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, and Vocal Clinics, and Private and Group Instruction with Music Professionals. Each session culminates in a LIVE rock concert performance for friends and family. Not only do students meet and interact with other talented young musicians, they're also given unique access to established music professionals who share their experience and knowledge to help them understand some of the options open to them in the music industry. Rock & Roll Summer Boot Camp is the perfect complement to the school’s core program and a great introduction to the School of Rock. The school is the local branch of the nationally acclaimed music school, The Paul Green School of Rock Music, started in Philadelphia in 1998 and recently depicted in the documentary Rock School. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

School of Rock School of Rock La musica oggi è così intrisa di elementi commerciali che scegliere un brano è come scegliere i cereali dagli scaffali del supermercato: sei convinto di prendere quelli che più ti piacciono ma in realtà stai obbedendo alle subdole leggi della propaganda commerciale! Mi capita spesso di vedere fanciulli (alcuni in età da asilo nido! N.d.a), strappare di mano lo smartphone alla mamma e chiedere prepotentemente di cliccare su Youtube “Andiamo a comandare” ed ancora infanti non passati al cibo completamente solido ballare al ritmo di “Vorrei ma non posto” scimmiottando improbabili mosse di danza. Partendo dal presupposto che untormentone estivo non è altro che un tormentone estivo, la domanda è: cosa fanno quelle mamme? Quei papà? Come si fa a non desiderare con passione un’educazione all’arte musicale per i propri figli? Sapete qual è il problema? Che oggi sono finiti i brividi lungo la schiena, oggi vi è un’assolutaatarassia musicale, piccoli e grandi che vivono in uno stato di lobotomia permanente. E se il Rock potesse aiutarci? Ebbene sì cari genitori, credo che il Rock faccia al caso nostro! Senza falsa modestia credo di essere riuscito nel tempo ad educare mia figlia e a guidarla nel vasto panorama musicale nazionale ed internazionale cercando di farle scoprire il bello della Classica, del Pop, del Jazz ma soprattutto del Rock! Azioni meticolose (e a volte subdole) di carattere educativo e preventivo che hanno portato i loro frutti! Sin dai tre anni infatti ci siamo divertiti a concepire testi e melodie che cantavamo assieme e che scemavano quasi sempre in un tremendo mix tra rock demenziale alla “Elio e le Storie Tese” e “Baby Dance” da Villaggio della Valtur, il tutto finiva in una fragorosa risata.

The Roots Report: Look What’s Going Down: Artists have a duty to voice their opinions Okee dokee folks… “It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” This is from one of the most famous protest songs ever written, “For What It’s Worth,” by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). It was written more than 50 years ago in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in California and is still revered as one of the best songs of that generation. A few years later, Neil Young wrote his song “Ohio” about the Kent State shootings. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young quickly recorded this song, and when it was released as a single, it was backed with another Stephen Stills protest anthem “Find The Cost Freedom.” At the time, “Ohio” was banned by some radio stations, but today it is one of the few actual protest songs still being played on radio. These songs, the bands and the writers were major inspirations and influences for me as a musician and songwriter. Not only do I perform “Ohio” with my band Forever Young and “For What It’s Worth” when I play solo, but I have written many sociopolitical songs of my own that are part of my body of solo work. I feel protest songs need to be written, but they are the hardest type of song to get right. They need to express the concern and anger of the subject matter and marry it perfectly with a melody to make the song viable.

Guns N' Roses Guitarist Jams with Whitby Students
GUNS N’ ROSES GUITARIST JAMS WITH WHITBY STUDENTS This week, the fifth to eighth grade students in Miss Zampieri’s (Miss Z’s) School of Rock class at the Whitby School in Greenwich were treated to a special jam session with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus. Joining live via Skype, Fortus was the second member from the legendary rock band to guest in Miss Z’s class. Last month, band mate Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal also Skyped in to advise students and offer guitar-playing pointers. Classically trained in violin at age 4 and drums at age 5, Fortus provided the class with a unique perspective from his deep and versatile musical experience. In turn, School of Rock students treated Fortus to their rendition of Guns N’ Roses hit “Sweet Child of Mine.” Fortus provided feedback on his guitar as well as answered students’ questions. Inviting noted experts to class is one of the many ways that Whitby guides students to engage in learning and discover meaningful connections between their subjects and the real world. Also joining the class was Bob Capazzo, guitarist for Fairfield County’s rock band Merlin. Upcoming musicians slated to visit the School of Rock class this semester include Chris Bishop, who was a bassist for Robert Palmer and the James Montgomery Band, and Mike Suppa, a guitarist who has performed with many notable musicians including Ace Frehley of KISS; Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Starr of Alice in Chains; as well as Roger Glover and Steve Morse of Deep Purple. The Monterey Peninsula Cypressaires, Directed by Kristen Thompson, are one of over 800 Chapters in the United States and Canada comprising the Barbershop Harmony Society. They specialize in the unaccompanied, four-part, close- harmony style of singing known as “Barbershop”, and have delivered hundreds of critically acclaimed performances all over the Monterey Peninsula since they formed in 1956. About Us Produced by STG’s Education and Community Programs, More Music @ The Moore (MM@M) is a young artist development program that provides talented young artists (ages 14-21) with the tools and setting to rehearse and perform music under the direction of industry mentors and professionals. The program culminates with two performances at The Moore Theatre, an 11am student matinee and 7:30pm public performance (March 13, 2020). STG is thrilled to welcome back Matt Chamberlain for the 2nd year as the Music Director of the 19th annual MM@M. A dynamic producer, composer, and drummer Matt Chamberlain has played with nearly everyone from David Bowie to Fiona Apple on the Soundtrack of Frozen and his own albums. What sets MM@M apart from other young artist performances is a focus on original work and cross-cultural collaboration. This year, over 100 musicians auditioned to be part of the program, the standard was higher than ever. The 15 selected musicians have come together for 2 months of outside rehearsal before a week of rehearsals at the Moore Theatre to create an innovative, collaborative performance under the artistic direction of Matt Chamberlain.
