“You didn’t give him instructions, but if you had something here&there... at Saratoga you thought he could do he listened and tried to do it. I always trusted his judgment.” WORTH REPEATING Trainer Larry Jones, about Ramon Dominguez’s riding “It was the culmination of a 3-year-old filly season like no other. If your description of it is, ‘it doesn’t get any better than this,’ you are accurate. If you say, with all common sense, ‘I can’t believe I just witnessed that. That just doesn’t happen,’ you are correct.” Trainer Steve Asmussen, on Rachel Alexandra’s 2009 Woodward victory

“I would have liked to have seen him ride Kitten’s Joy. He was a little before Ramon came to prominence. At his peak, he was the best horse I ever had and I would have liked to have seen how he would have gotten along with him. Kitten’s Joy listened to his riders and would have 800-523-8143 loved Ramon.” Trainer Dale Romans, on teaming up with Ramon Dominguez

Friday, August 12, 2016 The Saratoga Special 27 STAKES RECAP Full Color Turco Bravo stretches out to win marathon BY BRANDON VALVO Turco Bravo stood in the paddock near the No. 3 saddling tree before Wednesday’s $100,000 Bird- stone Stakes. The green No. 5 saddlecloth sat on his back, a nasal strip in the green and white Contessa colors partially obscured the blaze on his face and orange and black wraps covered his hind ankles. A final splash of color came from an orange shadow roll perched just above the nasal strip. Groom Tito Vejar, wearing a green No. 5 over his shirt and an orange cap, walked Turco Bravo on a long line, but paused as the chestnut stopped near the paddock fence and gazed out. His head held high and ears forward, Turco Bravo surveyed the crowd like he was overseeing his own kingdom. I just hope that everyone sees that hard work pays off and even if you’re told you can’t do something try harder, you can do it.” Following a riding accident in 2009 at Arlington Park, the East Greenbush native became paralyzed from the chest down, and has been determined to make it back to the winner’s circle ever since. The bionic exoskeleton, manu- factured by Re-Walk, provides upright ambulation for people with chronic, disabling disorders, including spinal in- juries. The equipment is expensive and takes a lot of practice to use; Straight has been training in it for nearly two years. “It felt great,” said Straight. “Get- ting up there and walking in front of my friends and family is unbelievable. A dream come true. Ever since I’ve gotten this I’ve just wanted to come to Saratoga and show everyone so bad. “I’ve been coming here since I was 5, 6 years old. I’ve gotten such a great response from being in town from the racetrack family and friends and actual family and friends. It’s awesome.” Straight made appearances in the winner’s circle at Gulfstream Park in January to raise awareness of the ad- vancements being made in the treat- ment of paralysis. He is currently the only jockey with this type of equip- ment. “Do what I did and use it as motiva- tion to try even harder,” said Straight. “I would like to use it more and more and make my stops everywhere with the exoskeleton to show more people and give people chills like I gave you and inspire people.” – Shayna Tiller
