Summer 2016 3 OutLook For the Bay Boomer and Beyond... FROM THE DESK Publisher and Tecla Emerson Murphy Editor-in-Chief [email protected] Managing Editor Mick Rood Recently we had dinner with good friends to celebrate [email protected] Art Director Emma Stultz their 50th wedding anniversary. We asked the usual questions: [email protected] What's your secret? How did you do it? They danced around, Advertising Sales Director Cynthia Rott [email protected] throwing out different words like tolerance, good humor and Columnists Dr. Jim David patience. As with many long-term relationships there didn’t [email protected] seem to be one clear-cut answer. They did let us know that life Michael J. Dodd [email protected] hadn’t always been as carefree as it now appeared to be. She Victoria Duncan [email protected] aptly pointed out that there isn’t a marriage that hasn't gone Jessica L. Estes through some either very dry periods or tough times caused by [email protected] financial problems, health issues, personality clashes or all of the Ryan Helfenbein [email protected] above plus many more. The bliss of a long-term relationship, she said, just isn't Henry S. Parker going to carry anyone for 50 years. Statistically, more than one-half of today’s first [email protected] Drs. Passaro and Wooddell marriages fail, and sadly, even more fail the second and third time around. www.WPDentalGroup.com They both said it’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly keeps couples together with Contributing Writers Barbara Aiken [email protected] all the upheavals, problems and roadblocks. In hindsight, they felt that the most Joanne R. Alloway trying times had been the middle years when that flush of excitement of the newness [email protected] of marriage had worn off. She said that within a decade of the wedding much of that Joan Amundsen [email protected] fun was gone. There had been the new home, new job, new location, new interests, Dr. Ricardo Barbieri [email protected] new baby, new friends, an endless and dizzying parade of excitement. Then it got Tricia Herban down to the mundane: he worked too late, she had too much to juggle, the wedding [email protected] day glow was gone, the children's wants were incessant and no one seemed to care. It Peggy Kiefer [email protected] then morphed into "never enough" -- time, money, energy, caring, space, etc. Trying Leah Lancione not to be negative, she said those middle years become somewhat of a day-to-day [email protected] Elsa Lane struggle and she remembers wondering if it was as good as it was going to get. In [email protected] hindsight, they both said that for those who got through those middle years and Kater Leatherman [email protected] kept it together, there were rewards. Their children are off leading satisfying and Kathryn Marchi committed lives of their own, products of a semi-stable home, she said. [email protected] Now, after all those long and sometimes difficult years, they found they could Elyzabeth Marcussen [email protected] enjoy the results of keeping it together. They could enjoy this perspective despite Neal Moran [email protected] admitting there were times when one or the other had the urge to end it. Still, Ellen Moyer they knew that terminating the relationship wouldn’t be good for anyone, most [email protected] especially the children they committed to raise. As most of us have seen, shunning Albert Northrop [email protected] that responsibility can have disastrous results. They also took the view that another Rev. Dr. Amy Richter relationship might be nothing more than exchanging one set of problems for [email protected] Susan Rosapepe another. In the end, trusting a known commodity proved better than taking a chance [email protected] on something untried and unfamiliar. Sue Ellen Russell [email protected] After all the years of struggle, holding it together and putting everyone else first, Louise Whiteside their observation was that there's now a shared, deserved contentment to be enjoyed. [email protected] Retirement, they said, is here. They’re taking the time to get back to enjoying Circulation Jack Hovey [email protected] each other and the things delayed for so long -- places to visit, reconnecting with Photographer R.C. Murphy [email protected] longtime friends, books to be read, a new hobby and grandkids. There’s even a bit of Subscriptions S. Hill extra money, as every cent is no longer committed to straightening teeth or paying [email protected] $24.95 per year (bimonthly - 6 issues) for one last education.
